No honey for under 2's and pregnant women???

I went to Costco today and someone offered a sample of yogurt and honey. I went to give DD some and the lady asked how old she was as she isn't allowed to give it to under 2's. I questioned it saying guidance is under 1's and she said she new this but had been instructed not to give any to under 2's or pregnant women.
This is ridiculous right? Policing of pregnant women aside what do they think will happen if they give a pregnant woman honey?
Has anyone been refused ham/cheese etc at Costco due to pregnancy? And what if they god forbid attempted to BUY some honey?
I get being cautious but this is a step too far right?

Yes it's crazy. Isn't even contraindicated for pregnant women or children over 1

hidinginthenightgarden · 27/09/2017 17:02

That's what I said Pixie. The woman serving it wasn't even convinced of the policy and said she wouldn't be asking women if they were pregnant as it is rude.

I would actually complain about that - she does not get to police what you feed your child! Seriously, why do people think they get to make decisions for other people? Drives me nuts. I bet she wouldn't have refused if a man with a child asked!

beecrazy · 27/09/2017 17:18

It's because there is a very, very slight possibility of raw honey (ie not Gales or Rowse etc) having a few botulism spores in it. Whilst these are no problem for most people those with immature or altered immune status may not be able to combat the spores. I'm not sure there has been a case of it linked to honey for many years.
Beekeepers do have much better understanding and training in hygiene these days

hidinginthenightgarden · 27/09/2017 17:22

Honey- ironic considering the topic, The women is not to blame, the company is. She was told she cannot serve it, she hasn't decided it upon herself. She said herself it was daft.
I may make a complaint to the company though.

LoudestRoar · 27/09/2017 17:22

beecrazy you're right, but the guidelines are not to give it to a child under the age of 1.

hidinginthenightgarden · 27/09/2017 17:23

But beecrazy, there is no advice against pregnant women eating honey so I don't see why Costco are taking it upon themselves to refuse it?

She was not policing you. She was not telling you what to feed your child. She was passing on the guidelines that she had been told. She was also covering herself by choosing not to give you honey for your child.

Imagine the drama if DD had become ill and it was"revealed" that "New guidelines said...." and that Costco were aware and had ignored....

Daily Mail articles, threats of suing for compensation etc. Nowadays people have to cover themselves. No-one actually cares if you give your daughter honey or not - just not from their teaspoon.

SoPassRemarkable · 27/09/2017 17:49

It's just because it was one of those free taster desks and they have to cover their arse I guess. If you choose to feed a week old baby honey I doubt they will give a shit.

blackteasplease · 27/09/2017 17:51

Maybe they say age 2 to make sure they aren't mistakenly giving it to a child under 1 but who looked 14 months (say).

A bit like think 25 but for honey Grin

Wheresmytaco · 27/09/2017 17:52

I don't think there is an issue with her not giving it to the child. They wouldn't give beer to a 15 year old because guidelines too. However they can fuck off telling pregnant women what they can and can't eat

Wheresmytaco · 27/09/2017 17:53

Lol at think 2

Wheresmytaco · 27/09/2017 17:53

Cheeky one year olds trying to get their toddler mates to get them honey

hidinginthenightgarden · 27/09/2017 17:55

I never said she was policing me Meraidevant, someone else did and I pointed out that it was the company not the employee.
My point is that the policy is ridiculous, I have no qualms with the woman serving.

MiraiDevant · 27/09/2017 17:57

They are not telling anyone what they can and can't eat!

They are not refusing to sell anything

They are passing on guidelines and choosing not to offer a free sample - different thing and with different legal implications.

PlaidMaid · 27/09/2017 17:59

It is a bit daft but i wouldn't complain. Do you seriously care that much? Just have the yogurt on its own. You're not even paying for it!

hidinginthenightgarden · 27/09/2017 18:01

No Mirai- they are not. I approached and took one and she said "if she is under 2 I cannot let her have it". That is different to letting me walk by and not stopping me to offer.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 27/09/2017 18:01

Yes - I was imagining "Think 2" as well. Now mine are older I am rubbish at guessing the age of teenies. But if I thought child was over 2 then they probably won't still be under 1. Even I'm not that crap!

MiraiDevant · 27/09/2017 18:02

No I know it wasn't you OP it was HoneyWheeler - but sorry I can see now how what I wrote was ambiguous. Apologies.

And I am sure if you wanted to buy tonnes of honey it would have been fine. They cannot give it to you that's all.

Right off to cook - honey glazed ham with honeyed carrots and honeycake for pudding! Grin

hidinginthenightgarden · 27/09/2017 18:06

Plaidmaid- I don't care that much no, and I have better things to do!

OP posts:
hidinginthenightgarden · 27/09/2017 18:08

What about the pregnant women though? No research to show they cannot have honey at all?? It is such a bizarre policy!

HoneyWheeler · 27/09/2017 18:12

My mistake - up on my high horse and didn't read properly!

NSEA · 27/09/2017 20:52

I got questioned buying chorizo in sainsburys once whilst heavily pregnant, it was one item in my weekly shop. Ignored all the cheese I had!

I also got questioned when ordering satay chicken in a chinese. Even though I was ordering food for 6 people so it may not even jave been for me (it was).
