My cousin steals. A lot.

He normally shop-lifts from supermarkets but has admitted he's nicked stuff from convenience stores and pharmacies.

He takes a lot of food (such as pre packed sandwiches, packets of meat, bags of sweets , multipacks crisps etc) and medicines, books, and magazines.
He scans some stuff through the self-service machine in the supermarket and then checks he's not being watched by the members of staff , then walks off without paying for the other items, or he'll put them in his rucksack and brazenly walk out.
The largest thing he's stolen to date is a £25 kitchen clock (apparently he just put it under his arm and walked out unchallenged ).

Since he told me what he's up to, I feel really mad at him and have lost a lot of respect for him.
He boasts that he has never been caught or challenged. I warned him that he's playing a very dangerous game and he replied that the worst that would happen is if he got caught that "they'll just ban me from the store" .

His justification is that supermarkets can easily afford it and I'm being pathetic to find a problem with his behaviour Angry

AIBU ? He's 32 ffs

he sounds stupid.

opheliacat · 27/09/2017 16:31

It is very common, I guess supermarkets save on not having staff on the tills.

AJPTaylor · 27/09/2017 16:37

there is no justification for it. he sounds like a knob.
but supermarkets make it easy through having self check outs

He would say that, he's a thief. He lacks social responsibility and thinks himself not accountable but he will get caught sooner or later and be full of righteous indignation.

Charge him an extra 3% of whatever he eats or drinks in your house to cover thefts incurred by the stores and passed on to you. See what he thinks of that.

He's a dick and he could potentially end up with a fine/criminal record/prison sentence if he's caught.

Except what actually happens is that companies dont jeep staff on Hmm
You're cousins a selfish idiot, but obviously trying to justify the behaviour.
I'd have no problem cutting him out, i wouldnt want to be around that.

Let's hope.

Your cousin is a criminal and I hope he DOES get caught. It will serve him right.
