Accidentally flicked stone into window and now smashed. On long hold to insurance company and wondering if this is going to kill my no claims bonus...

Not sure how else to sort it? Just another long line of crap to sort out....to do list imploding.

Shouldn't the gardener have some sort of trades insurance you could claim it from rather than going through your insurance?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 27/09/2017 16:03

Why can't he claim on his liability insurance? And if he doesn't have any, then he should pay up.

You didn't cause the damage but he is liable.

flownthecoopkiwi · 27/09/2017 16:03

I wondered that...

You'd be cheaper paying to fix the window yourself as you will end up paying your excess and it will probably cause your premiums to go up.
Speak to the Gardner and say your happy for him to pay x amount towards it as opposed to going through his insurance. If he says he doesn't have any, explain you feel uncomfortable continuing to use his services incase something else happens and it becomes costly.

With most car insurance, glass repairs don't affect your no claims and will have a lower excess. Also you can usually arrange the repair directly with the windscreen company and they deal with your insurance company. (It may be described as 'windscreen' cover on your policy but should cover all glass).

Yes just found out that although its called windscreen it xovers other bits too. Excess £75 so paid that and getting fixed this week... oh weĺl...next lawn mow is now free ;)

Agreed, your Gardner should be covered under his liability insurance. If he doesn't have any he should be coughing up, and really getting some insurance!

19lottie82 · 27/09/2017 16:15

Sorry just RTFT! You're too soft OP, you didn't even ask him to pay the excess???

yorkshireyummymummy · 27/09/2017 16:17

The gardener should have PIL ( public liability insurance). If he doesn't then ask him for the money to repair it. Accident or not, he should have PIL and if he doesn't he should be expected to put his hand in his pocket.
If you end up claiming in your own insurance / paying for the repair yourself then DONT pay the gardener.
Dispense with his services and make sure you ask to see a copy of every tradesmans PIL from now on. I wouldn't dream of having anybody doing any work for me without checking they were insured first!

MipMipMip · 27/09/2017 16:18

How much does he charge for mowing your lawn if he can cause damage costing you £75 and mowing covered it!?

flownthecoopkiwi · 27/09/2017 16:21

After the cost of his work today its only £30 difference. Thats what i pay him every two weeks to do a couple of hours so he'll owe me.

He's a small business and not rolling in it i expect. He looked a bit stressed. I'll ask about the public liability as next time it could be a big house window and cost him ££££ or a less chilled client

Not as bad as when DH reversed his new and rather expensive car into the gardener's van. Causing £500 damage to gardener's van, not a scratch on the car.

Then tried to blame gardener for "parking in a different place".
