AIBU to think that as staff, I shouldn't have to wait in the queue for hours

Part of my job is based at a GP surgery. Sometimes I have to leave forms and things at reception for patients to pick up. This literally is a case of handing a piece of paper to a receptionist and saying something like 'Mrs M will collect this tomorrow, thanks'.

Now usually I am happy to wait for people to finish their queries but sometimes I am in a bit of a hurry so just wait to one side and pass over whatever it is. Yesterday I arrived at reception in my uniform, carrying a massive bag (I was on my way out to do visits) and a volunteer 'helpfully' tells me that there are 6 people waiting and that she will let me know when it's my turn! So I then had to hang around, getting in the way with all my equipment, waiting for people to spend bloody ages making enquiries about prescriptions and appointments, just to basically post a piece of paper!

AIBU to think that I didn't need to be told to wait at the back like a child? I wasn't going to just barge in when they are in the middle of something fgs but I'm also working and don't have 20 minutes spare to queue!

Is it just me who thinks you shouldn't get to the front because you're staff?

I don't think the issue should be seen as 'whose time is more important?'. Obviously, the staff can provide a better service to patients if they're not queuing up behind them.

OP, it sounds like they might benefit from implementing a system whereby staff who need to leave forms with reception can leave them in a tray so neither they, nor the patients, are inconvenienced by your queuing for a pointless reason.

Although I agree - it sounds like the volunteer was just being overzealous and didn't realise you were staff.

Why the heck are volunteers used in a GP surgery when they could see or hear confidential information? And yes, you shouldn't have waited. I'd try some envelopes with me, put the form in an envelope with the relevant note on the front and leave it at reception.
