Surprise Interview: done thing?

IsThisTheDoneThingNow · 26/09/2017 16:55

I am sitting on the sofa eating a sweet potato when I get a call from a number I don't recognise. It's so-and-so in HR from this-and-that company, am I free? Well, I am keen on a job at this-and-that, so I say 'yes!', thinking perhaps we are about to book in my interview date.

No. She goes on to FULLY interview me on the call. So I have no notes, nothing in front of me, no time to prepare, lap top out of reach and off, but I have to answer proper interview style questions. I think it goes well, but I am concerned and wish I had more time. I mean, I was literally just watching Peep Show and eating a potato, then suddenly talking about my weaknesses and most successful career moments. I've also had no other interviews yet, so no 'stock' answers prepared.

Point is - is this now the done thing? AIBU to think that this isn't very cool? It makes me think she is just calling a list of people, rather than bothering to set up appointments for calls, but I haven't job hunted for a while so I could be completely wrong and this could all be reasonable.

(As a side note, she actually called me back two hours later to tell me I hadn't got the job as didn't have enough experience. Which is hilarious as firstly, you have my CV love, and secondly, I do. So now I am wondering if I just did badly...which again, no time to prepare!)

Eating a potato 😂

Slimthistime · 26/09/2017 18:09

never worry, OP
An M&S sweet potato would probably mean a second mortgage for most of us anyway Grin

you have made me want sweet potato fries for dinner now!!

IsThisTheDoneThingNow · 26/09/2017 18:10

Were you sat holding your sweet potato aloft the whole time? And did you at least mute Peep Show?

I muted it, Mark had just pretended to take an E in a club Sophie had dragged him to. Classic Mark!

Potato did go a bit cold in the end. Should sue.

Keepthebloodynoisedown - that is interesting to know! I will be doing this in future...

'I was eating a potato' is the new 'I carried a watermelon' Grin

Was it boiled or roasted?

IsThisTheDoneThingNow · 26/09/2017 18:27

WishfulThanking. Was it boiled or roasted?

He was roasted! Had good skin on him as well. And feta cheese inside.

I miss that potato.

😍😂

Slimthistime · 26/09/2017 18:32

OP, sweet potato with feta cheese is the best (not Morrison's, just generally). Good choice.

IsThisTheDoneThingNow · 26/09/2017 18:48

Slimthistime It was good. I might have another tomorrow to cheer me up. Hope I don't get surprise interview flash backs though.

I do interviews in my job and I will call and do a telephone interview then and there. If they say that they don't have time then I will arrange a time to call back when it's more convenient though.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 26/09/2017 19:02

I can actually imagine this happening to Mark, and him analysing it afterwards.

They sound a bit rubbish OP, you're better off without them.

IsThisTheDoneThingNow · 26/09/2017 19:31

PinkFlamingo888 Interesting Pink. I didn't actually get asked if it was a convenient time, so that would be have been good! Why do you take this approach above emailing/calling first to arrange a time?

OP posts:
dobbyclub · 26/09/2017 19:34

It's really unprofessional to spring this on someone. It depends on the job I suppose but in my field it would give a terrible impression of the organisation.

IsThisTheDoneThingNow · 26/09/2017 19:41

dobbyclub It's an office based job in a specific field that I have 6 years experience in...so an interview would have to be prepared for. And it does give me a bad view of them now! Specifically as the feedback to why I then wasn't taken forward was also vague...

Sorry, I've only just seen your reply. I honestly don't know why we do it this way, I just do as I'm told! Although I make sure to check it's convenient and am happy to rearrange but I don't know if everybody in my company would do it this way. Our questions aren't too in depth at this stage but I do like it when I speak to somebody that hasn't had time to prepare but answers really well about the role/ company as I know they're truly interested in the job. On the flip side there's always the people that I have called back at a later date and have no decent answers to give, when really they've had an advantage.

Onthejobhunt · 27/09/2017 20:41

Definitely sounds odd. I've always had telephone interviews prearranged, and in fact have been asked if it's convenient to talk even when prearranged! As my name suggests I'm in the market at the moment too so I'll watch out for this technique.

I agree with some other posters though, that it sounds like you dodged a bullet. And that sweet potato sounds amazing! Grin
