To use a Perfect Prep??

FarmerYumi · 26/09/2017 14:24

Health visitor has the arse about me using it to feed my baby. Used one with DC1 with no issues, bought a new one for DC2.

I asked what the issue was exactly and she couldnt really give me an answer. She said she had heard of a baby getting sick and they thought it could be the perfect prep. I asked for more details. She said they can grow mouldy. I said I was aware of the mould issue, this is why I replaced it for DC2, and clean it out every couple of days. I check the pipes regularly.

She just said I should try doing it "the old fashioned way" to see if DC liked the milk better Hmm she has no issues with her feeding at all. I'm stumped.

I used one with mine and they never got ill. I know a woman who just puts formula into cool boiled water and feeds which to me is absurd.

Wooders09 · 26/09/2017 17:04

Why are they still for sale if they are such a risk to babies then??

We had one with our second and I'll be using again with my third.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 26/09/2017 17:07

Do what works for you.
I didn't use a perfect prep and it worked. The one time I did go to try it (at my friends) it was a disaster. My friend threw my water away. The perfect prep didn't work for some reason. Que me having to wait on the bloody kettle to boil, cool before I could feed hungry dd

Mammylamb · 26/09/2017 17:12

I used one and had no issues. It was the best baby purchase that I made

caroline161 · 26/09/2017 17:25

These things go on the market and then after the event as problems begin to be reported they are pulled. Please don't think because you can buy something it must be safe. Do your research and investigate it further. It isn't the safest way to make up formula feeds.

Rodent01 · 26/09/2017 17:31

Caroline161, the same can be said for everything.

Some people believe Baby Bjorn Carriers give lifelong hip issues. There are loads of articles out there.

Thousands of people still use them and they are on sale despite the research.

Each to their own to choose the 'risk' they deem appropriate.

Rodent01 · 26/09/2017 17:32

Not everything, many things!!!

lostfrequencies · 26/09/2017 17:39

My HV actually suggested I buy one, "off the record" of course, as she probably shouldn't be seen to recommend such things. It was the best purchase I made and just about saved my sanity.

Sallystyle · 26/09/2017 17:39

we just switched our process and put the formula in the bottle before the first shot of water

Isn't there a problem with doing that? It's been a long time since I made bottles but I remember back then we were told to never add the formula first.

TammySwansonTwo · 26/09/2017 17:50

The problem there is that the water instantly cools as it hits the formula so less likely to kill the bacteria, I believe

CorSie · 26/09/2017 18:03

We've been using the perfect Prep for just over a year now with no issues at all. We change the filter as soon as it says too. I clean out the water section once a week and I took the back off after all the mould concern over Facebook and found nothing. They obviously won't be for everybody, same with everything I suppose, but I love mine! FWIW, DAD has never had any health issues. No sicknesses from her milk or anything.

CorSie · 26/09/2017 18:03

**DD, not DAD lol

Cheby · 26/09/2017 18:08

What Tammy said. They're on sale because nothing awful has happened yet. The operative word there being the last one.

We combifeed, we use ready made at night if necessary, and make each bottle with powder formula with hot water and flash cool in an ice bath. It's not hard, and it minimises risk. Babies die from poorly prepared formula.

Cheby · 26/09/2017 18:09

Also, 'I use it and my kid is fine' does not negate the known issues with it.

NikiBabe · 26/09/2017 18:14

Baby milk powder is teeming with bacteria. The tiny hot shot that comes out isnt hot enough to sterilise the powder. Then it just dumps filtered cold tap water on the rest.

Those that say no problems, how do you know? If your baby ever had a bout of d&v as a baby, it could theoretically have been inadequate sterilisation of the milk.

NikiBabe · 26/09/2017 18:15

Ready mixed cartons of formula all the way as no issues with bacteria ridden powdered milk.

guest2013 · 26/09/2017 18:21

Does anyone actually know of a baby that was ill because of it? All I can find is the sun and mail reports of parents finding 'mould' which wasn't actually mould.

FlandersRocks · 26/09/2017 18:27

Niki that's an expensive way to do it though...I imagine it would be out of the price range of many.

caroline161 · 26/09/2017 18:32

There are unfortunately thousands of bottle fed babies admitted to hospital every year with gastroenteritis( one of the benefits of breast feeding)but until someone adds to a national questionnaire "how did you make up the feed?"and then collates that data we won't know for sure. I don't suppose Tommee Tippee want to fund research into their own product when they suspect they know what they might find!

caroline161 · 26/09/2017 18:42

I've just found this.....

Yuck
Gooseygoosey12345 · 26/09/2017 18:42

I’ve used one for 7 weeks now with my 9 week old baby (bf before) and never had any problems. And this little one doesn’t wait for food so I wouldn’t be without it!

Wait4nothing · 26/09/2017 18:45

I’ve looked into the reason why you should put the water in first. The main reason is that when filling the bottle with the powder on first people would fill to the level they want and not take into account the water (this obviously isn’t an issue with the machine).

snackarella · 26/09/2017 19:00

She sounds like a DICK !

Yerroblemom1923 · 26/09/2017 19:24

I don't know anything about these machines but HVs arent allowed to speak of anything that may promote ff which may be why she was a bit arsey with you. I can still recall the look of absolute horror on my HV's face when I said I gave my dd the odd bottle last thing at night so we could get some sleep!

haveacupoftea · 26/09/2017 19:29

I have to wonder if the posters here who are against the PP have ever held a distressed and screaming baby through the process of the kettle boiling, making the bottle and then flash cooling.
