There ARE two female Octonauts but they're v much secondary characters, and does make me a bit miffed*. Thought we'd come a bit further than this.

Not offended at all. But the only way we can change gender inequality is by starting with children. If children's TV was evenly split (not necessarily every programme, but overall) then it would be a good start to fixing the problem. Children don't know about gender stereotypes until they are taught them.

Apparently Kwazii was female in the original books (I can only find this mentioned in passing though, as in this article: www.wired.com/2013/02/octonauts/amp/). It's pretty frustrating if they genderflipped her for the show, although I'm not sure why there wasn't more discussion about it at the time if that was the case?

For my sins I have recently been watching a lot of nijago in german. It has been pissing me right off that you have to go to 9th or 10th in the billing to get to the one and only female character in the entire universe.

No one is saying everything has to be 50/50 but when you look at the bigger picture it's overwhelmingly uneven.

Having that woman on Fireman Sam seems about right. I know who I'd want to arrive and carry me out of a burning building.

Chuggington has Koko who is female. There is also sky in paw patrol. Agree about octonauts.

Well, if they we talking about children's television, and if there was a disproportionate number of female characters in leading roles in popular programmers then I hope they would be complaining, yes.

You're right. There's got to be something missing in your life if you want to discuss the ratio of sex of cartoon characters. They probably aren't.

I hope she's been brought up better that to care about female representation in cartoons. She isn't being represented. You're questioning the 'fairness' of a talking polar bear, penguin and carrot. The one female is even in a traditionally male role.

Celebrate diversity instead of getting all angsty when a cartoon doesn't have the perfect balance of race, sex, gender, sexuality, diversity etc. Life doesn't and nor should it.

Not only is Sky the only main girl and pink, she is actually modelled on those toy dogs that bark and then backflip. Newsflash, producers: dogs don't backflip. So she isn't even a real dog!

I'd imagine a female fire fighter would manage just fine. After all they receive the same training and have to meet the same standards as male fire fighters.

Interestingly DS also thought Peso was female. Presumably because Peso is caring and a bit wimpy.

DS still loves the Playmobil Super 4 which has Ruby the pirate as one of the main characters (2 male, 2 female), and MLP which is almost all strong female characters.

Octonauts do have Tweak and Dashi (who is Sauci in the books). In the original pre-TV books the female characters do seem to have more presence...so it's a positive decision by the production company to annoyingly side-line them :-(
