... about the lack of shopping trollies in Mothercare?

Went in to Mothercare superstore with DD who's almost two and as the third child with a big gap between her older siblings doesn't have many toys. Local mothercare has Early Learning Centre upstairs so I thought I'd treat her to a few things. Carried her through the car park in search of a trolley as I expected to buy a few things so the buggy wouldn't suffice. DD has not yet learned the art of walking outside holding hands and is pretty heavy so a carry across the car park was the safest option and of course the only parking space was miles away (or so it felt) from the entrance to the store. No trolleys (or is it trollies?... I digress) in the trolley park thingy outside the door. DD is desperate to escape my clutches and I really need to strap her in. Glance around store. Not one customer is pushing a trolley in Mothercare. I must have missed where they store them, surely? Nope.... upon asking a staff member I am informed that they DO NOT HAVE ANY TROLLIES. None. In the store. Where they sell Big Things. In large boxes. The staff member (a team leader ) told me they don't have any as they broke or were stolen and are too expensive to replace. She suggested I email head office. This just beggars belief.
So I had to lug DD back across the car park and somehow get the buggy out of my car without her legging it into oncoming traffic. Back to the store where I couldn't balance anything on my pram and had a really wasted trip because I couldn't carry much with one hand.

Just so pissed off. I know it's a first world problem etc but surely a so called "superstore" aimed at customers with little kids should have a fucking trolley or two?

I wouldn't ever really expect trollies anywhere except supermarkets. Not that they wouldn't be a good idea, but I guess I'm surprised you're surprised.

Would a member of staff not have helped you with the larger items?

I don't drive so have to manage shopping without a trolley all the time. Staff are more than willing to help take things to the car infact most offer!

Dancingfairy · 25/09/2017 22:08

And that's shopping without a trolley as I have a baby in a pram also just to be clear.

Cornettoninja · 25/09/2017 22:09

Should have gone to toys r us Wink

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 25/09/2017 22:12

That's weird, our nearest mothercare (superstore, retail park) has loads of trolleys.

Rolypolybabies · 25/09/2017 22:15

I left a city Mothercare for this reason. One crappy rusty trolley with no safety strap. Staff I asked said the same, all stolen. Lovely

The guy at the till did say he might have been able to find someone to help me to the car but I couldn't really expect them to follow me round the store holding boxes. They always had trolleys before whenever I've been there and there's a trolley park thingy outside (like you get at Sainsbury's) so that's why I was surprised. Yes, I should've gone to Toys R Us! They could do with the business 😀. Just seems to be that in a retail market where every penny counts stores should encourage spending (and I guess they did me a favour by saving me money I shouldn't have been spending).

It was a superstore at a retail park.

No baskets in the store?

NearLifeExperience · 25/09/2017 22:18

Our Mothercare permanently shut their toilets and baby room a few years ago. As it's a bit away from the city centre I stopped going then. I think, as at your branch OP, they're tightening their belts, but at the expense of losing customers.

FakePlasticTeaLeaves · 25/09/2017 22:20

Everyone steals trollies exclusively from mothercare but all other supermarkets manage. Very strange.

Ywbu just to think shopping there would be good. I went there for the first time in YEARS to buy a car seat on offer. Knew what I wanted before going in. Located in a minute. I then spent 25 mins trying to actually buy it, finally locating staff who wouldn't return... including a manager... to find out it wasn't in stock. Then saw another one that fit the bill, 10 min after trying again to find staff I carried it to the till to be told I couldn't buy the display one and suggested I find staff to get it. Stood my ground and suggested she did, then got a guy to bring the wrong one, then it finally came and was £5 more than on they tag. Told to go and find staff from the car seat dept... followed by a lot of arsey comments when I gave up and walked out. Funnily though it's not the worst experience. That was years ago, when i began to boycott, when I tried to return a faulty breast pump the same day as purchase to be told loudly over and over to an audience that it wasn't the pump- it was me not making milk! (I did). Even showing it on her hand with a big drama to claim the noise it made meant it sucked...

Seriously, how do they stay in business????

silkybear · 26/09/2017 06:36

Mothercare is so expensive I'm impressed anyone can afford to fill a trolley in that place! Shock The only time I ever shopped in there they had 3 women behind the till. One serving, 2 chatting and doing paperwork ignoring the massive queue and when I finally got served they wanted my email address for an e-reciept and refused to serve me without one! I just want to buy something not get spam emails forever more. Absolute shit.

TheyDoThoughDontTheyThough · 26/09/2017 13:30

I really won't be surprised if they're the next retail casualty 😩
