Suspended sentence for a domestic abuse?

AIBU to think that this is absolutely ridiculous?

It demonstrates nothing of the sort Mother PeresA. It demonstrates the correct application of the law. The Secret Barrister is, as ever, excellent at explaining the reasons why: thesecretbarrister.com/2017/05/16/an-oxford-medical-student-stabbed-her-boyfriend-with-a-bread-knife-so-why-is-she-not-going-to-prison/amp/

ButchyRestingFace · 25/09/2017 18:20

Amazed that she's allowed to finish her degree. Presumably her studies will involve her coming into contact with vulnerable patients at some point?

What if they look at her wrong and she knifes them?

As for actually practising, surely a person with a criminal record for serious violence simply wouldn't be allowed?

kittybiscuits · 25/09/2017 18:23

Whilst I agree she should have been given prison time my ex wasn't even charged when he beat me black and blue and stamped on my head in front of our two young children. So please save the 'if it was a man' comments.

This x 1000

WineAndTiramisu · 25/09/2017 18:23

I don't think she'll be allowed to finish her degree, medical schools look very harshly on these sort of things...

BoneyBackJefferson · 25/09/2017 18:28

All sentencing for DV is frankly shit.

It worries me more that not only is she being allowed a second chance by the court at being a surgeon but the the university college is standing by her.

MadameJosephine · 25/09/2017 18:32

I teach medical students and I've seen students thrown off their course for much less following concerns about professionalism and fitness to practice. I would be very, very surprised if this woman is allowed to complete her course, regardless of the sentence handed down

ButchyRestingFace · 25/09/2017 18:32

It worries me more that not only is she being allowed a second chance by the court at being a surgeon but the the university college is standing by her.

I just read she's taken a voluntary sabbatical from her studies. Hopefully it's just a case that the university can't kick her ass to the kerb whilst she's missing in action.

AtHomeDadGlos · 25/09/2017 18:36

No. I didn't start the other thread. I had a look to see if there was one but couldn't.

She has already been accepted back on the same course.

Personally I think it's shocking. Stabbing and the rest of the assault should have resulted in a custodial sentence, not a slap on the wrist.

If this case had been reversed and it had been a man in the dock I feel it would be inevitable that he would've received time for it.

I'm sorry to those posters who have been mistreated by the judicial system. This victim has been similarly let down.

JigglyTuff

I'm sure you were the first to point towards the correct application of the law in the Ched Evans case.

My point stands: economic privilege is not only a thing, but eclipses all else.

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 25/09/2017 18:51

Is stabbing domestic violence or attempted murder ?

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 25/09/2017 18:54

Also some one with the combination of ‘a personality disorder, an eating disorder, and a drug and alcohol dependancy’ - as quoted on the story shouldn’t be allowed to set foot in a bloody medical career

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 25/09/2017 18:55

And yes many people have a personality disorder but with her this is combined with another MH illness and alcoholism/drug addiction ... not exactly reliable

ParkheadParadise - I'm so sorry about your daughter.

OP - I don't agree that if it was a man he would have got a custodial sentence or if it was someone from a council estate.

I am very surprised that she'll be allowed back on the course though - that's shocking.

teainbed · 25/09/2017 18:59

She won't be allowed to finish the course or be licensed by the GMC. No doubt about that. I suspect they were waiting on criminal proceedings being completed before telling her that though.

JigglyTuff · 25/09/2017 19:00

Did you read the article Mother? It explicitly makes the point that the sentence has nothing to do with economic privilege.

Slimthistime · 25/09/2017 19:14

has she been accepted back, I thought that was still under review?

I saw someone on Twitter saying there are sound legal reasons for this choice, so is this going to be another "within the law..."?

The law clearly needs to change.

I think if she had been poor she'd have been given jail time.

gluteustothemaximus · 25/09/2017 19:17

ALL sentences for violent crime are too lenient.

Most stabbing, or other violent crimes, if a first offence will result in a suspended sentence. It's not right. But it's not unusual.

HelenaDove · 25/09/2017 19:23

"If this case had been reversed and it had been a man in the dock I feel it would be inevitable that he would've received time for it"

DadGlos are you bothering to read all the subsequent posts or just the ones that suit your beliefs.

Tedster77 · 25/09/2017 19:23

Agree with those saying if you're shocked by this you aren't aware of what lenient sentences are generally handed out for Domestic Violence.

I work in a job where I see large amounts of DV and I haven't seen one perpetrator get a custodial sentence yet Shock. I've seen men (because it has been men) given all kinds of non custodial punishments and days later they're back doing it all again.....

But yes I agree she surely can't ever work as a Doctor!

Slimthistime · 25/09/2017 19:26

Also wondering if OP knows what these sentences are usually like.

Stormwhale · 25/09/2017 19:28

It's a fucking disgrace.

AngelsSins · 25/09/2017 19:46

A man recently got off with murdering his wife, claiming self defence. He killed her by slitting her throat from behind. Save the "if it were a man..." bollocks.
