To put cream, manuka honey or leave alone on my dog??

Shamelessly posting for traffic.

My dog has a burnt paw pad. We have been dressing it at home every 2 days putting manuka honey on the wound site. Its healing fantastic and we are in for weekly reviews with the vet.

Now this is the problem she has been chewing her leg raw trying to get the dressing off. The vet has seen it and wasnt too botherd with it but its looking so sore. Until we get the vets on Tuesday is there anything I could put on it to aid healing? I am dressing it along with her paw....using a breast pad as gauze it fits perfect and plain cotton and nice and absorbent then vetrap.

We are now going to make her wear a buster collar at night when we cant see her but would like to get it better. The Pic is before our dressing change this morning.

I would be concerned that she is chewing because there is infection so would suggest you see a vet ASAP, till that time she should be wearing the collar 24/7 to prevent any further chewing.

Sudocrem and a clean sock. .

Floralnomad · 24/09/2017 13:03

No advice but your dog looks great in socks ! Do you mind me asking what kind of dog it is as the photo makes him look huge .

DJBaggySmalls · 24/09/2017 13:03

Chewing can be a symptom of itching, irritation or pain, so talk to your vet first.
Anything you put on she'll lick off, which draws attention to the area. Give her some attractive dog chews.

crazyspaniellady · 24/09/2017 13:04

I think the only thing you can do is keep it covered as you have, eldest Ddog used to be a nightmare for paw-related injuries and he used to end up with “lick-granulomas” from this. Very good idea with the buster collar though, or one of those inflatable rings, just break the cycle of “licking because it hurts” then “it hurts because Ive licked it so now i’ll chew away some more”, it’ll let everything calm down.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 24/09/2017 13:06

The only thing I put on burns is lots and lots of aloe gel, but this looks infected so I wouldn't in this case. Could you try to see the vet tomorrow, rather then on Tuesday?

crazyspaniellady · 24/09/2017 13:06

Also, if the buster collar is on, maybe let it air for a while when you’re in the house so it dries out a bit.

specialsubject · 24/09/2017 13:08

Human burn treatment is never to use unsterile muck. Is it different for dogs?

MrsMotherHen · 24/09/2017 13:15

That wound pictured isnt her burn. Shes done that herself trying to get her dressing off. I have cleaned it all this morning and redressed it shes a border collie.

Isn't that one of the reasons for a cone of shame? They're not pleasant but do work (unless you've a cat with a poorly tail who's worked out how to get it into the cone so she can still chew it! )

MrsMotherHen · 24/09/2017 13:27

we wanted to avoid one shes a very nervous dog as it ot but unfortunately we have no choice she is having it on.

cream antiboitics and more painkillers for her vet was quite concerned and wants her back in three days. Sad

Sad

Did she jump at the cooker? My mum used toh have a collie/lab cross who would jump up at the hob to see what was cooking

Notevilstepmother · 26/09/2017 18:56

Poor baby. Give her an un mumsnetty hug from me.

Therealslimshady1 · 26/09/2017 18:58

She may just be trying to get to the honey?

A friend of mine tried to sort her dog's raw skin out with coconut oil....the dog LOVED the coconut oil, and licked it until it was all gone

Llanali · 26/09/2017 19:00

Go for a buster collar, the inflatable ring type.
I am fostering a welfare case ATM, had him six weeks- vets every three days due to very infected injury, the buster collar is a saviour.

MrsMotherHen · 26/09/2017 19:01

we were having a bbq bank holiday weekend and in the evening had a firepit. Some wood fell onto the floor she steped on it and got a hot ember stuck in her paw pads so that was quite nasty it had to be redressed every 2 days and shes chewed her leg to try and get the dressings off. Which has left her leg in quite a state as seen in the pic.

On the upside her paw is now healed although still sensitive still no walks.

Feel so sorry for her shes fed up herslef the vet mentioned she could have lost her leg which has really frightened me if am honest.

MrsMotherHen · 26/09/2017 19:02

mummyofmoomoos · 26/09/2017 19:11

Poor little thing- sending her lots of fussing, isnt there a product called stinky stuff thats good for stopping chewing and promoting healing? Flowers

MrsMotherHen · 26/09/2017 19:15

i am not too sure moomoos i have been given flamzine cream to put on it.

OP posts:
mummyofmoomoos · 26/09/2017 19:18

Well, stick to what you have off the vet- but worth having a look online at what stinky stuff can do- shes beautiful, and i hope shes feeling lots better very soon Bear

MrsMotherHen · 26/09/2017 19:21

thanks moomoos am just so fed up with it all.

It has to be the most expensive bbq i have ever had over £350 so far in vet bills and no sodding insurance.
