To stop reading the news..

Bit of an odd one. Is there anyone her who doesn't watch or read the news? I've noticeable become very anxious and depressed lately with all of the bombing, murders, hurricanes, earthquakes (not to mention the willy wangling between Kim and Trump) etc. My heart goes out everyone involved, of course it does. But being completely helpless I'm swaying towards not reading these things in hope my mood lifts. I suffer severe anxiety anyway and with all of this 'end of the world' talk again is just making it worse..

I know it some will see it as naievity or ignorance..

I am an avid news watcher/reader. If at home quite I have BBC or sky news on in the background.

I've given it a break for now though largely. So worrying and depressing all the time. I caught the headline about the acid attack in Westfield yesterday. What kind of bastard does that.

It's quite liberating to give the news a break. Try it OP.

I have wondered the same thing too.i get very upset when I read about awful things yet I have the BBC news app on my.phone and listen to the news. I Also suffer from.anxiety and I think the news exacerbates this. BUT I feel I need to know what's going on in the world too. Plus it is hard to get away from the

Sittingintheshade · 24/09/2017 07:25

I used to read news websites a lot at work but since I've been on mat leave I haven't bothered as don't have the time. I feel a lot calmer without worrying about all the shit happening. Maybe I'm naive but I'm too wrapped up in my own little world at the moment and I prefer it!

We never buy newspapers, and I rarely watch the news. I may see the headlines, but then usually turnover. Partly this is because it’s so depressing, but partly because it’s so repetitive. Once you’ve heard it once, you don’t need to hear it again. Also, nowadays, you can get news from so many different sources, and news stories are broadcast instantly, rather than at 8am, 1pm and 9pm.

PeaceAndLove1 · 24/09/2017 07:35

Yes, it's a good idea OP, to cut down for sure. The TV in general really. Meditation is great too, not the easiest thing to start with but worth sticking with. Best wishes.

Nicktynoo · 24/09/2017 08:13

I recently deleted Facebook and all my news apps as I was getting really anxious and upset by everything that is happening. The constant notifications on my phone was effecting my mood drastically.

Junglefowl · 24/09/2017 08:17

Try the local news instead- it is so peaceful , ours has such gentle news like a bicycle being thought stolen and then being found, a recipe for jam, photo entries of pets etc Smile
Sorry about your anxiety, one of our DC has it very young and has been helped by vitamin 8 (inositol ) in case that's any help

Fidoandacupoftea · 24/09/2017 08:23

I am also avoiding the sensational headline news and reading science and technology sections. I would also recommend local news. On a similar note I am now watching Lewis on Netflix, and find it so much more calming than some newer dramas

Chrisinthemorning · 24/09/2017 08:30

I never watch the news and rarely read the paper. Big news (mostly horrible stuff like terror etc) still gets through to me.
I get anxious and worrying about the state of the world doesn't help.

junebirthdaygirl · 24/09/2017 08:33

I never watch news on telly as the readers voice introducing new stories and adding drama makes me nervous. But reading it is fine as that dramatic element is not there. So l read online and get the newspaper everyday. I also hate sky news running all day in waiting rooms etc. I dont know how the receptionists in my dentist sit under news running all that. 5 mins to get main stories is enough.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 24/09/2017 08:34

I've stopped reading/watching. It's just shit all the time..It started with Brexit, l just felt sick watching anything to do with it..

I avoid all of it now. Bits of stuff like aTrump and Notth Korea keep getting through, but l try to ignore I all

Stopped watching it for years. Find it easy to do. I won't say I find my life has improved. Why start your day with misery and continue to invite misery into throughout the day.

It's pointless propaganda

Giggorata · 24/09/2017 09:54

I've stopped watching/ listening to the news, for over a year now. I pick up headlines from DH, mumsnet, work and if I want to, look at the Beeb website. I look at the health and science sections occasionally.
I am a lot happier without it all.
I miss Schnews and Indymedia, which used to offer alternative views, but I suppose it's a sign of the times that they are no longer active. Unless anyone here knows of any other sites........
