If it has full sized, touch sensitive keys it should be ok. If you want it to 'last' you'll need to get a pedal at some point too.

mummypleeeaaaasseeee · 23/09/2017 13:13

Is touch sensitive the same as weighted keys?

We got this for DD starting. Recommended by musician friend. www.gear4music.com/Keyboards-and-Pianos/JDP-1-Junior-Digital-Piano-by-Gear4music-Matte-Black/19FQ

Looks good to me (piano teacher!)

Nousernameforme · 23/09/2017 13:38

Depending on where you are in the country you could go on ebay and get an old upright one for practically nothing

mummypleeeaaaasseeee · 23/09/2017 13:43

Thanks daisy!

I was advised against ordering from enay as can't check that all keys are working etc - and there is none near me!

I have an old upright piano but I'm not sure I'd buy one from EBay - I'd want to get one from a specialist second hand piano shop. Old pianos can be expensive to maintain and you could be unlucky with a random EBay purchase. Having said that, I prefer the feel and sound of a 'proper' piano. But that's just a matter of preference. I'm not a piano teacher, so I expect advice from a piano teacher would be better than mine!

Dixiestampsagain · 23/09/2017 16:40

Yes, that would be fine, then. It looks good to me (also a piano teacher) for a beginner- just make sure it's at the right height (e.g. Not on a table that's too high and 'messes up' hand position. I teach on an electric piano nowadays, even though I have an upright as well.

takingsmallsteps · 23/09/2017 16:56

We are also thinking of buying a piano too, quite attracted to the gear4music one! Would we then need to buy another piano at some point? We were thinking of a Clavinova but it seems like a lot of expense if piano isn't Dd's thing! I'm confused by the whole digital piano scene and we don't have a good place to keep an upright (would be stored in an extension prone to temp changes).

Moanyoldcow · 23/09/2017 17:02

They're fine for beginners. If he takes to it though get an upright after maybe grade 2. I picked up mine the nothing on Gumtree - just had to pay transport.

The new electric pianos can be excellent but you can't get all the 'colour' into more technical pieces after Grade 4/5 ish imho.

allegretto · 23/09/2017 17:06

A Clavinova is a good starting point
I traded mine in after a few years for a silent acoustic.

Dixiestampsagain · 23/09/2017 17:24

As I said, I teach on an electric piano, but it's a Yamaha that cost a few grand, rather than a small, more portable digital piano. The former can take you as far as you want, but a 'cheap' starter piano is good for a beginner- and isn't too expensive if it turns out it's not their 'thing'.

Moanyoldcow · 23/09/2017 17:30

Dixie I've played some lovely electric pianos but I'm a dinosaur I know and prefer strings. I know you can get amazing sounds from them.

It's probably from when I took my Grade 1 and used a grand for the first time. Love at first sight/touch. Bit overwhelming for a 9 year old though.

mummypleeeaaaasseeee · 23/09/2017 19:30

Thanks everyone!
We went out and got the Casio from our local music shop (got a stand too) and DS has already had a few practicesSmile
Sounds like a piano to me!Grin

Sorry wrong thread Blush

My daughter has this piano! She is now at Grade 5 and still loves it! I'm not musical but I think it has a beautiful sound.
I bought it online from Gear4music, with the stand, a stool, pedal and headphones (at the time it was cheaper than Amazon). Their customer service was very good. We have it in a fairly small room and it is neat and doesn't take up a lot of space. Only disadvantage is it doesn't have a lid for the keys so can get dusty. I recommend it.
