Buffets and Vegetarian options.

perhapsiwill · 22/09/2017 09:57

The last buffet I went to there were meat options and veggie options, great.
Unfortunately the meat eaters enjoy eating non meat food too, as they should, but this meant that as I was not first in the queue, the veggie options were gone and only meat left. Apart from some cakes.

I am not blaming the people who eat meat, the veggie options were attractive, but why does whoever provides the buffet not realise that the meat eaters don't always only eat meat!? There were only three vegetarians out of forty people.

This is not the first time by the way. Anyone else get this?

Shark aren't you hilarious ?

Remove vegan and other necessary points in your oh so funny picture to black, gay etc

What a prick Smile

ShowMePotatoSalad · 22/09/2017 14:04

Jace That's different - your meal was clearly labelled as the gluten free option because you have a particular dietary requirement.

However meat eaters are generally omnivores and don't just have meat. The caterers should provide enough non-meat foods for everyone, not just vegetarians.

KurriKurri · 22/09/2017 14:10

Why didn't she, the caterer, but them to the back in reserve for veggies? 'Veggies, see me! I have your main in the back!

I agree expat - it could definitely have been organised a bit better, but host had hired caterers for the hog roast, and then made quiches and told hog roast servers that they were for the veggies, she wasn;t actually in theserving area. Then I think the caterers were too wimpy to tell the hog eaters to lay off the quiches.

My sister can't eat gluten and she recently went to a wedding which was a set, sit down meal. Bride had provided special meal for my sister, waiter asked if she was the gluten free guest, went to get her sweet (which was a fruity thing) and about three people on his way back stopped him and tried to take it off him because they fancied that instead. They'd been told what the menu was, and had pre selected their mains and sweets from a couple of options. But decided they'd rather eat someone elses food.

WillowtheWasp

Did you just compare laughing at vegetarians with homophobia and racism or not (not sure about the smily's meaning)?

ChristmasFluff · 22/09/2017 14:14

Laughing at veggies being 'faddy eaters'. I'm the least faddy eater I know - I'll eat just cabbage and potatoes for a week (holiday to Germany in the 80s) if that's all that's available. Whereas those who do eat meat seem to be very faddy - cow ok, dog or horse not, for example (I recognise meat-eater fads vary by country/culture)

acubalibreplease · 22/09/2017 14:21

Could I please politely suggest that if there are no utensils by the meat free dishes that you don't pick up the tongs from the sausages and stick them in the veggie cous cous? Thank youAngry

existentialmoment · 22/09/2017 14:26

RE the hog roast, if I don't eat pork or don't like hog roast, why would I not be allowed the quiche that was for the vegetarians? Am I supposed to eat nothing?

expatinscotland · 22/09/2017 14:38

'RE the hog roast, if I don't eat pork or don't like hog roast, why would I not be allowed the quiche that was for the vegetarians? Am I supposed to eat nothing?'

Did you tell the host you don't eat pork so she could put in for more quiche to cater for you?

coddiwomple · 22/09/2017 15:52

Not so long ago, it was the polite thing to do to eat what was being served, unless genuine food allergy. Now some people think they are entitled to chose the menu before they go anywhere, they sound hard work.

existentialmoment · 22/09/2017 15:58

Did you tell the host you don't eat pork so she could put in for more quiche to cater for you?

Depends, did the host tell people that it was pork or nothing?

perhapsiwill · 22/09/2017 16:02

Cod Oh in the good old days!

Fortunately some people find the systematic torture of animals disgusting and have decided that they don't want to be a part of it anymore.

I find the growing number of young people who are making this decision based on more information being available about the industry and the effects on the planet and their health encouraging.

'Depends, did the host tell people that it was pork or nothing?'

You could always ask the host beforehand. I've always been lactose intolerant, so if there's a buffet I'll ask because things like moussaka, lasagna, hunter's chicken, etc. I cannot eat. I've gone without meals more times than I can count at events or on airplanes due to its all being dairy-based so I usually go to buffets only marginally hungry or with backup eats in my bag these days.

HarmlessChap · 22/09/2017 16:08

I wondering if the OP scowls at people in Tesco who pick up broccoli but also have bacon in their trolly?

Food is food, if you choose to limit yourself to a meat free diet that's fine but why expect others to adjust what they eat to accommodate your preferences!

coddiwomple · 22/09/2017 16:09

good for you if you are consistent in your approach. I have very good friends who are vegan, and go to great length to avoid all animal products, wear vegan shoes, research the conditions of factories where clothes are made in general etc . They are respectful, fascinating and have very good tips and advice on how to improve things for all of us by making little changes.

I have slightly less respect for the "veggies" who look down at steaks but are happy with leather shoes, cakes made with eggs (have you looked into the reality of commercial laying farms?), fish and so on. Grin

For the record, I am happy to be a meat eater!

Crunchymum · 22/09/2017 16:14

Had this recently at an event (on a boat, so no-one could pop out and get extras) and I ended up "guarding" the veggie food so there was enough for the actual vegetarians.

perhapsiwill · 22/09/2017 16:15

Harmless. Well are you limiting yourself ? as you don't eat dogs and cats (presumably) .

Why would I scowl at someone with broccoli and bacon in their trolley? I was talking about the caterers not catering for people who eat meat and veg (most people) and there being nothing left for those who choose not to eat dead animals.

How did that work then? Did you stand there with a fork saying "no sald for you, I saw you eat a sausage roll!"

LivingInMidnight · 22/09/2017 16:20

OTOH I've been to 3 buffets this week, and all of them were vegetarian. Two included a fish dish.

Just pointing out that you only went to one vegetarian buffet.

KurriKurri · 22/09/2017 16:21

Why on earth would you wonder that from what the OP has written concerning buffets ? She hasn't at any point said that people who eat meat are not allowed to eat vegetables or buy them from the supermarket.

NapQueen · 22/09/2017 16:22

A proper buffet for 40 people should have one of everything minimum. So they shouldnt have only supplied three peoples worth of veggie quiche. Pretty shit.

nooka · 22/09/2017 16:23

Unless something is labelled as reserved for x then I don't think that most people will assume it's not for them. Why should they? The point of buffets is that it is a help yourself set up, and everything on the table is assumed to be available for everyone. If something has a label saying 'vegetarian' I'd just assume it contained no meat or fish products, not that it was only for vegetarians.

I do dislike people being greedy at buffets and not taking into account that there are others being fed, but as an omnivore I'm not going to avoid eating food that I enjoy on a buffet table just in case there is a rush of vegetarians.

SprinklesandIcecream · 22/09/2017 16:32

Nothing to do with meat eating or not. Poor catering that's it.

AlternativeTentacle · 22/09/2017 16:34

The buffet was half veggie and half meat. The meat eaters took meat and veggie. The numbers were small - 3 of each so it wasn't hard to tell. I mean, just so fucking rude

No. You know that is ridiculous. You cannot seriously expect the meat eaters to eat only meat, you know that is ridiculous. I eat meat as well as everything else, I do not have to choose a ham sandwich instead of a salad one because a) you have chosen not to eat the ham and b) the organiser has not provided enough so people could choose.

Of course it is ridiculous. 3 veggies and a plate of 12 quarter sandwiches. 3 meat eaters with 12 quarter meaty sandwiches. Should be 4 quarter sandwiches each. All meat eaters take 2 meat and 2 veg and there just 6 for the veggies to share. And a plate of 6 non-eaten meaty sandwiches that they then tuck into whilst we are sat there thinking 'what a bunch of greedy cunts'.

There wouldn't even BE veggie sandwiches if 3 people hadn't asked for them. They had been prepared and ordered for the veggies.
It is basic manners and greed.

putdownyourphone · 22/09/2017 16:34

Yeo - a good buffet should be 2/3 veggie food and the rest meat. Especially when halloumi is involved - everyone eats that.

At work once we were ordering pizzas for the office, I asked for a veggie one and they said 'no, we've already ordered one and you're the only veggie'. Went into a meeting and when I came out all the veggie pizza had gone!

VladmirsPoutine · 22/09/2017 16:39

Grin why do these threads always descend into these sort of ridiculous hysterical comments? Grin I also don't eat floor tiles. Does that work too?
