I've hurt my baby!

I've just accidentally hurt my poor DD whose 14 months Sad

She was stood up and I was trying to take her babygrow off, she wasn't too happy. I was stupid and carried on and she ended up falling flat on her face on the wooden floor!

Her mouth filled with blood! It was horrific!! I comforted her tried to clean as much of the blood with a wipe. She stopped crying quickly but I don't feel any better.

She's just fallen asleep in my arms (nap time anyway). I think she's bitten her tongue and lip. I'm devestated and feel like the worst mother in the world. The amount of blood has scared me and now I'm terrified to put her in her cot.

Please tell me she's fine, I feel like the worst mother in the world. It was an accident but my fault. Sad

Hey @CosyFires ! Welcome to the 'shit what have I done, I'm a horrible parent! Shock' club!

It takes awhile for some of us, but we get there eventually. Smile

At around 10 months old, our daughter fell off the couch (after playing and giggling and bouncing about for a minute or two,) and landed on her head (about a 16" drop onto the rug,) and we nearly passed out.

We were filming her at the time too, and DH was so mortified that he deleted the footage. Quite pissed off really; we could have got £250 off You've Been Framed. Grin

Our daughter was fine... obvs. Grin

RoastsArelife · 21/09/2017 11:41

You aren't a bad Mum. I once stupidly decided to put dd bouncer chair on the kitchen while I cooked, she was obviously moving/bouncing in it an I hadn't noticed it was of course slowly moving forward, next min it falls flat on the hard kitchen floor! There was no blood, a little mark on her heard she cried but was fine I felt AWFUL. It was years ago now but looking back I can't believe how much of an idiot I was even putting it on the kitchen table Hmm

WorkingBling · 21/09/2017 11:53

Aaah, the "I've hurt my child I'm a terrible mother" moment. It happens to all of us. Usually more than once. I'm sometimes amazed at how children make it to adulthood with all the accidents and near misses. scares the hell out of you, but totally normal.

My first was giving DS, 7 months, two black eyes when I tripped while holding him and landed us both face down. I managed to stop it from being too bad by sticking out the hand that wasn't holding him, leading to a quite badly sprained finger for me. But his nose obviously touched the ground too - leading to the black eyes. Bit awkward as we went off on holiday the next day!!!

Walking round kitchen with newborn trying to "multitask" accidentally touched oven door with one of her tiny toes = tiny blister and instant screaming. Felt awful for weeks.

I once closed my son's arm in the car door! He still loves me. Don't be hard on yourself... these things happen 😫

44PumpLane · 21/09/2017 13:11

As others have said it happens to us all!

All I would say though is that we were told in first aid class that of your baby loses enough blood to cover his or her palm then take them to see a doctor straight away.

Which seems like a ridiculously small amount of blood but it's something like 5% of a persons blood volume if it covers your palm (and babies Palms are tiny)!

TiramisuQueenoftheFaeries · 21/09/2017 13:14

I once accidentally banged my son's head on the underside of a mantelpiece while standing up.

It's a funny story now.

JassyRadlett · 21/09/2017 13:15

Oh god fingernail blood. How do baby fingers have so much blood? I felt like Lady Macbeth.

My finest hour was trying to get ds1's trousers on, I was pulling them up and must have been a bit forceful (DS was undoubtedly resisting!) and he somehow jackknifed and landed face first on a piece of duplo, which left a deep, perfectly circular cut/bruise near his eyebrow. There was a mark for AGES. Still shudder about how close it was to his eye.

MamaLazarou · 21/09/2017 13:16

Ehat an upsetting thing to have happened. As others have said, it's a rite of passage, I'm afraid. Give yourself a break, she won't remember a thing and I'm sure you're taking very good care of her.

MrsPottsTeaCosy · 21/09/2017 13:17

Don't be too hard on yourself op, I pulled ds trousers up once and he went flying backwards and whacked the back of his head on the floor, he's a strapping 22 year old now with no ill effects. Such accidents are common place.

shakingmyhead1 · 21/09/2017 14:27

dont panic we have all done it, and when they get older they do it to them selves regularly! 2 nights ago at 1am i heard a huge thump and then a few mins later howling, i raced in to mr9's room and hes on the floor holding his face howling in pain, got him up and asked what happened... he had a dream a spider fell off the ceiling on to him and in his dream he threw himself out of bed.... in his dream... you guessed it he threw himself out of bed and face first into the wall, he had a knot on his head a couple of red marks and a very swollen nose ( hes all good) so dont freak out too much its gonna happen a few more times in life ( apparently even when they sleep)

Mittens1969 · 21/09/2017 14:36

I remember when we first had DD1 placed with us, aged 1. I used to be scared to death of any tumbles and bruises. The worst one occurred at 18 months when she fell over on some decking and chipped one of her teeth. I felt awful.

What made it harder at that time was that the adoption hadn't happened yet and the social worker insisted that we reported every incident that left a bruise. It made my early time with her so much more stressful than it needed to be. When we adopted DD2, the social worker didn't worry at all, actually hardly visited us. Smile

Go easy on yourself, and get yourself a cup of tea. Your DD will have many more accidents and she'll be fine. Flowers

My 6 year old has a nice list of Stupid Injuries.
I have clipped his finger with the nail cutters.
He faceplanted off the sofa at 4 months. Picked just the wrong moment to try and sit up!
As a toddler he went running across our living room, skidded on the laminate and smacked into the corner of the coffee table. Gp and walk in closed, went to A&E
Escaped out the back door age 3 and climbed up into the boot of our car, slipped and landed face first in the gravel. A&E to glue the gash in his forehead together.
Age 5 - walks smack into a BRIGHT YELLOW metal bollard in the school carpark. Did I mention they are bright yellow? Very obvious. Needed GP for steri strips.
Age 6 - falls off the slide in the school playground after school. Given he's a massive drama llama i ignored the wailing and we started walking home.
We got half way and he's turning grey and his hand is shaking and he can't walk any further. I called my mum for a lift as my car was at home.
We ended up going straight to A&E and he had a supracondylar fracture of the humerus and has one more week in plaster to go.
My 3 year old was rather jealous of all this and put Lego up his nose, needing a trip to the walk in centre to remove it.
Those are just the highlights so far.

MagicMoneyTree · 21/09/2017 14:46

Mine launched himself over the back of the sofa and bit down on his tongue. It did bleed loads and I felt awful but he was absolutely fine. Accidents happen. Xx

LittleLionMansMummy · 21/09/2017 14:57

I'm amazed you got to 14 months before something like this happened op. I think you've done better than many of us.

Dd fell out of her buggy two months ago aged just 8 months, because I momentarily hadn't strapped her in and got temporarily distracted by my ds. She sat up and toppled forward onto the floor, big red bruise immediately popped up. Called NHS Direct for advice. The call taker said, incredulously, two or three times, compounding my misery at shitty parenting: "She wasn't strapped in? Why wasn't she strapped in?" The doctor who called me back said straight away "You wouldn't believe how common these injuries are. You're not a bad mum, don't worry! It happens A LOT. She should be fine, they're very resilient."

user1480334601 · 21/09/2017 15:04

I dropped my phone on my 10 week old babies sleeping face once! Sad luckily it hit her dummy and didn't do any harm except awaken her.. After seeing she was OK and stepped out the room I was a crying mess! Worst feeling in the world hurting your little one.

Sounds like your daughter will be fine. It's all experience

BlurryFace · 21/09/2017 15:04

Oh hell, these things happen and far worse things too. I slipped on the stairs with DS2 when he was 6 weeks and he went flying and banged his head. Had to take him to A&E where he was admitted for observation. A mum I know didn't realise her toddler could get out the front door and the gate and had a chat with police and social services when she was found wandering the road.

Just today me and my 14mo collided as I came down the stairs! I was carrying the hoover so couldn’t see what was at the bottom, he came barrelling around the corner, flew straight into my legs and fell backwards! We both got more of a shock than anything, he cried for a few seconds and then forgot all about it.

She probably forgot about it as soon as she nodded off for a nap. Don’t beat yourself up Smile

Badbadtromance · 21/09/2017 16:05

My ds was 2 and holding both my and Grandma's hand and still managed to fall head first into the garden pond. It happens, don't worry

Mia1415 · 21/09/2017 16:11

Don't worry OP. We've all been there. Accidents happen.

TheEdgeOfGlory266 · 21/09/2017 16:20

I have one of those cordless dysons - so quite heavy at the back, my 2 year old came up behind me whilst I was vacuuming and got a lovely black eye from being smacked in the face with it. We've all been there.
I was also walking right behind him as he was crawling up the stairs when he was about 18m and he slipped, smacked his mouth and split the skin between the lip and gum - which actually turned out to be a good thing as it was too tight but I felt so guilty. Don't be so hard on yourself.

Spudlet · 21/09/2017 16:22

Mum gave me a shiner at that age trying to catch me - I apparently sort of pivoted and fell onto my face Blush

When DS was 6 months old or so, I sat him down on the floor by a pool so I could help a friend out with her baby (it was a ladder), swung round to check on him and knocked him flat on his back on the tiles Blush

It happens! Flowers
