To think your insurance excess shouldn't be

More than what they pay out?

So for example if they are going to pay out but to £500 but my excess is £600 ... surely that's just erm ... wrong? Confused

OP posts:
NickMyLipple · 20/09/2017 22:13

Then don't claim?

Seniorcitizen1 · 20/09/2017 22:13

Sorry - don't understand

abbsisspartacus · 20/09/2017 22:13

Lower your excess?

existentialmoment · 20/09/2017 22:13

You chose the excess when you signed up, so if you think its wrong then you have noone but yourself to blame for it.

NickMyLipple · 20/09/2017 22:13

Sorry, didn't mean to be snippy but there isn't any point in claiming if it's less than the excess!

Nightscroller1 · 20/09/2017 22:15

You choose the excess and if it costs less then you only pay the cost not your total excess to the insurance company...

orlantina · 20/09/2017 22:15

If your claim is less than your excess, there's no point claiming.

You could have paid more for insurance and got a lower excess. Then it's worth claiming smaller amounts. But you'd have paid more...

NickMyLipple · 20/09/2017 22:16

And you will lose any no claims discount!

gamerchick · 20/09/2017 22:17

But you agreed to the excess Confused pay a higher premium if you want a lower excess on something.

WinditupSlowitdown · 20/09/2017 22:18

I never said I was claiming ... I may not be the brightest bulb but I'm not that dim either.

I do pay a lot for my insurance however this is a specific part of it. Can't be bothered to go into detail but yes it just seems ridiculous to pay for the privilege of being able to claim.

OP posts:
orlantina · 20/09/2017 22:19

Normally you ONLY have to pay the excess if you have a claim.

What are you getting money for?

orlantina · 20/09/2017 22:20

I think some detail may be needed to help the AIBU...

Ontheboardwalk · 20/09/2017 22:22

Did you choose the excess or did they put it that level based on past claims?

You usually pay a higher excess to get cheaper premiums but that isn't always the case. Best try the different calcs to see if it's worth it. Made no diffence to my premium if I had £150 or £250 excess

Migraleve · 20/09/2017 22:24

Obviously you don't claim if the excess is more than the claim value Confused I don't really know wat you are asking/saying

Bringmewineandcake · 20/09/2017 22:24

There's no claim to make if the amount you want to claim for is below your excess...

Rosierosa15 · 20/09/2017 22:25

You can't claim if the cost is less than your excess. Only amounts higher than your excess are even covered on a policy.

ConfusedDotty · 20/09/2017 22:26

Well you would only pay the excess in the event of a fault claim for motor insurance. Home insurance, you more or less set the excess yourself. Was the policy not looked into before inception?

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 20/09/2017 22:27

You choose a bigger excess to reduce the premium presumably.

existentialmoment · 20/09/2017 22:27

Can't be bothered to go into detail but yes it just seems ridiculous to pay for the privilege of being able to claim

It would be ridiculous if anyone did that. In fact I don't even think you could do that, you'd have to pay them a hundred quid and they won't have a mechanism to collect that.
You're not making the slightest sense you know.

MrsJamesAspey · 20/09/2017 22:27

You sound like you think that you have to give the insurers £600 excess and then they pay the £500 bill?

Have you now realised you've got it wrong which is why you don't want to post more details?

HiJenny35 · 20/09/2017 22:29

If you "can't be bother d to go into detail" probably better to not bother putting up a post about it.

HandbagCrazy · 20/09/2017 22:47

No one can really help you if you don't post what type of insurance / claim.

FWIW, with car insurance, if your set yourself a high excess on a low value car, you can't expect them to increase the value just to guarantee you get a payment.

You presumably had the option to discuss the excess when the policy was taken out so this should have been addressed then.

Ivy79 · 20/09/2017 23:32

Have you got your figures wrong @winditupslowitdown? Confused

Coz if not, then I am not sure what you mean sorry. Sad

balsamicbarbara · 20/09/2017 23:36

It's a bit like how NHS prescription charge is higher than the price of some medicines. Unless a pharmacist takes pity and tells you this you'll pay over the odds..

existentialmoment · 20/09/2017 23:55

It's not anything like that.
