Went to an imax movie yesterday with dh and ds.

Before the film started a guy in the row in front was watching porn on his phone. His friend next to him said 'dude there's a little kid behind us'. The guy watching it said "I don't give a fuck, not my kid." HmmConfusedShockAngry

Then during the film there was a tiny baby screaming its lungs out pretty much consistently. Brought by (who I assume) was Grandma and was totally oblivious. Poor thing, film was way too loud for a baby and it was probably terrified!

Then no less than THREE people (all right in front of me) were holding their phones up high in the air and taking photos/recording! So massively in my view and hugely distracting.

Oh, and don't forget the couple that had a pretty loud argument.

Wth? I haven't been to the cinema in years. Is this what it's bloody like now or did I just get unlucky?!

My first night out with dh after our first baby was born was for dinner and a film.it was somethibg we were both really keen to see and had been looking forward to. Couldn't believe the people who felt they could just act as though they were at home. Like you say, talkers and phone users. 're was a group of four teens across the aisle from us and I ended up using my best teacher voice to tell them to stop talking. They responded with that annoying "ooooooooooohh " and we complained to staff who basically told them to pipe down or get out. Cinema is so expensive now I really don't want it spoiled by people with no manners.

As for that person watching porn? Disgusting.

Creambun2 · 20/09/2017 21:38

It was better when cinemas had stalls and a circle so the more dignified cinema goers could be away from the inconsiderate masses.

BattleaxeGalactica · 20/09/2017 21:40

Back in the day dh and I used to go to the cinema a couple of times a week. Haven't been for years now. The last few occasions were ruined by inconsiderate bastards. Highlights include screaming three year old who was way too young to be entertained by the film we'd paid £££ for our kids to see and the bored five year old who was allowed to run up and down the aisle and across the front of the screen several times over. That doesn't include the child who was too young to see Harry Potter and screeched its way through the spider scene Angry.

DVD's and streaming all the way now here.

Battlescar · 20/09/2017 21:42

Who the heck watches porn in public?!?!?!?! That's unbelievable.

RonSwansonsMoustache · 20/09/2017 21:44

Our local independent cinema is fab. Big comfy armchairs, cocktails/wine/snacks available from the bar, or tea and coffee. Hot chocolate, milk and sweets for the children.

I've never seen anyone in there take the piss - except when I saw the new Bridget Jones and one woman got smashed and got really rowdy. Everyone promptly told her to shut up and the cinema staff came in and removed her after a minute or two.

IHateUncleJamie · 20/09/2017 21:47

We tried to watch Victoria & Abdul at a Cineworld last night. There was a couple who were maybe in their early 60s; firstly they had sat in someone else's reserved seats. Then they made a big fuss about finding alternative seats. They then started to talk to each other loudly during the opening scenes. This carried on with them commenting to each other, reading the subtitles out loud, etc. Then the man's mobile phone rang AND HE ANSWERED IT, proceeding to have a conversation (despite shhh-ing from the people nearby), saying "I'm in the cinema".

They talked on and off during the whole bloody film. At one point the man went out to the loo and the woman carried on commenting on the film, to herself! Then when the man came back, she had to tell him - loudly - what he'd missed.

They just ignored the people shushing them. Unbelievably entitled and considerate shites.

blahdyblahblah · 20/09/2017 21:50

It was in Boston. If it was in the U.K. I most probably would have told the guy to stop watching porn and asked the people holding phones in my view to put them down but I feel a little more intimidated here I have to admit.

Plus I had ds with me and am in a wheelchair at the moment so feel quite vulnerable.

We do have a gorgeous old Art Deco cinema near us (which serves wine which is unheard of) and I've been told they have usher in with the film that are quite strict.

I may give that place a try but never a multiplex again.

The poem made me AngryAngry but I figured if he was unpleasant enough to do that and swear right in ds's face he was probably someone I didn't want to pick a fight with.

Porn not poem. I love poems.

I almost screeched during the spider bit in HP though. Grin

Tartyflette · 20/09/2017 21:55

The cinema staff would certainly have done something about the people who were filming the show on their phones.
DH and I are regular cinema goers, and often go to a multiplex in a nearby New Town . I am a 'shusher' and have no qualms about asking people to be quiet, but TBF, we very rarely get any such problems in the town which does not have a stellar reputation, to say the least.
And the other cinema we go to a lot is a 'Picture House' cinema in a small city which is vair MC and so naice it's almost painful. but we like it Grin

Autumnskiesarelovely · 20/09/2017 21:56

Last time I went there was a young couple sharing the same lounger chair right next to me and practically making out! Sigh. This was not back row! And it was a kids movie!

anotherprosecco · 20/09/2017 21:58

Only go to our local independent cinema, 100 seats, bar, deep leather reclining seats, loads of leg-room, little table between each pair of seats to put your drinks on. So popular that they built a second screen, only 80 seats. We go every couple of weeks and have seen way more films there rather than buying the DVDs. Tickets from as little as £5.50. It's a great social outing for us.

KERALA1 · 20/09/2017 21:59

We had a row of freaks behind us at the ARTS cinema. 40 somethings. Dh told them to shut up politely then less politely but they just carried on talking at normal volume throughout entire film!

Escapepeas · 20/09/2017 22:00

We pretty much stopped going to the cinema because of other people's behaviour - the usual, phones, talking, etc.

I have a very low tolerance for this kind of shit and I basically got sick of having to tell some fuckwit that answering their phone in the cinema was not acceptable, nor was shouting and laughing with your mates. And I was sick of the cinema staff not giving a shit a refusing to remove disruptive patrons.

However, we've been a few times recently and it's been.... absolutely fine. We've deliberately chosen off-peak times and this seems to make the world of difference.

Vue though, give me the absolute rage. They have the shittest service on the face of the planet. And the fact they sell tickets at every food outlet in the cinema means even if you book your ticket in advance and collect it at the machine, you still face a lengthy wait while people buy their food, drink and tickets from disinterested teens.

AnnabelleLecter · 20/09/2017 22:01

Last time we went to the big one in the nearest city someone was playing music on their phone!
Luckily there's a very civilised independent one locally.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 20/09/2017 22:03

I'd have gone & complained to the staff, they're normally really good at telling people to pack it in in cinemas

The people filming it were breaching copyright. The cinema would have ejected them immediately. So far as the others I go to the cinema on average about once a fortnight- all venues from multi plex chain, independently owned mainstream to art house- never had anything like this. The vast majority of audiences behave properly. I think I've complained about behaviour twice in decades.

Watching a film on television does not remotely compare to watching it in a cinema.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 20/09/2017 22:06

And the other cinema we go to a lot is a 'Picture House' cinema in a small city which is vair MC and so naice it's almost painful

We have one of those.

Although The Dominion in Edinburgh must be the creme de la creme of middle class cinemas !

Escapepeas · 20/09/2017 22:13

The very worst thing I saw in a cinema was a few years ago and we'd gone to watch something on a Sunday afternoon. We had seats in last from back row - the back row in that cinema was where they had the accessible seats.

Anyway, two able-bodied people had sat in the seats intended for disabled people and carers, so a couple of seats with loads of legroom and a space next to them for wheelchairs.

A guy in a wheelchair came in with an able-bodied friend and they naturally wanted to sit together. Except these people wouldn't move and said the wheelchair guy should just stay in his chair.

The manager came and they still wouldn't move. They were literally the most hated people in the cinema, because people were getting up to go over and tell them to move and the film was delayed as a result of the dispute too. In the end, the wheelchair guy and his friend caved and he stayed in his chair.

What sort of cunt do you have to be to refuse to vacate a disabled seat for a person who is actually disabled.

MorbidBibliomancy · 20/09/2017 22:46

I've stopped going to the cinema for these exact reasons. Tickets are hideously expensive these days and the experience isn't worth it any more. Last time I went there were a couple of kids with cap guns running up and down the aisle shooting at each other. Complained to staff who took them out, but the kids just snuck back in 15 mins later. I'd much rather wait for a film to be on Netflix or Amazon and watch it on my sofa at home!

blahdyblahblah · 20/09/2017 22:49

I need to pee a lot and can't wait long (thanks for kicking my bladder out of my body ds Angry) and get massively anxious about getting up in front of everyone and falling (terrible night vision) so always spend most of the film desperately needing to pee then dashing to the bogs last minute (and usually having a bit come out on the way.) Blush

And I'm usually too cold or too hot. And I'm short and always get the tall or big haired person in front of me.

Wotrewelookinat · 21/09/2017 08:35

I don't go to the cinema any more, can't stand the selfish behaviour, the constant rustling of bags and eating of snacks. And you pay a fortune for the 'pleasure'.

MissionItsPossible · 21/09/2017 09:57

I never see brand new films at the cinema anymore. I wait a couple of weeks and then go on a random weekday evening. Only a handful of other people there. No kids. Bliss.

hazell42 · 21/09/2017 10:15

I love going to the pictures. I go at least three times a week (odeon limitless - brilliant idea).
You do sometimes get people looking at their phones - its only 2 hours. put the bloody thing away, and people sometimes talk, which can be annoying.
BUT, seeing a film in the pictures is SO much better than watching at home. It is a real experience. Something shared. I went last night to watch the new Kingsman. 80 people left the cinema afterwards with a smile on their face. And not once was I interrupted by the phone, television or any of my kids demanding food/money/ a lift. Two hours of pleasure just for me.
Cinemas rock. If the person in front of you is being a dick either complain to the staff who will definitely sort it out for you, or flick popcorn at them until they get the message and pack it in. I've tried both. They generally work.

BattleaxeGalactica · 21/09/2017 10:21

The entitlement isn't confined to the UK. We went to see a film in Amsterdam years back. We deliberately picked a seat on the end of a row as I like to be able to stretch my legs into the aisle. About five minutes later some CF group tried to shoo us along to the middle of the row so they could sit there Shock

Happy to report they failed Grin

TammySwansonTwo · 21/09/2017 10:30

Used to work in a cinema in my student days (many moons ago) and nothing you're saying surprises me. Finding bottles of urine were not uncommon since they didn't want to miss the film. Once found a human poo on the floor. Also, a woman giving a guy a blow job. During Dr Doolittle 2. In the afternoon. Five seats away from kids.
