In thinking spiralisers are a useless dust gatherer?

Taat kind of.

Talking of useless, dust gathering kitchen objects, someone bought me a spiriliser. Does anyone actually use these more than once?

What do you actually do? I tried courgettes and they went all soggy when I fried them.

I like mine. I spiralise courgettes, microwave for a couple of minutes and add feta cheese, tomato, herbs, cucumber etc. I did buy one of the cheap pencil sharpener ones so it’s not too bad to store

PerkingFaintly · 19/09/2017 11:55

My spiraliser is my friend!

Courgette "noodles" - only fry for few minutes.

Spiralised carrot or beetroot salad - clumps less than grated.

Colourful garnishes of carrot or beetroot which make it easier to sneak more veg into every meal.

dontstophelping · 19/09/2017 12:01

It would have to look, smell and taste like chocolate to sneak anything past ds lol.

Mine is roughly the size of my car.

It's only the tinyness of my kitchen that stops me being a serial kitchen gadget remorse buyer. I was tempted but I think it would be gathering dust.

Lenl · 19/09/2017 12:06

Mine gathers dust. It's a chore to use and spiralising vegetables doesn't replace pasta at all to me haha. I'd rather forego pasta entirely and have my vegetables in normal shapes Grin wish I hadn't bought it

StealthPolarBear · 19/09/2017 12:11

I hope my thread inspired this :)

Penny4UrThoughts · 19/09/2017 12:11

It's kinda like everything else. Use it and it's not. Don't use it and it is.

If I had a coffee machine it would be a useless dust gatherer as I don't like coffee. Give one to my next door neighbour and it would be used all the time.

SquareWord · 19/09/2017 12:19

I love my spiraliser! I've had it for nearly two years and it still gets used at least twice a week. If you have children that don't like veg then try spiralising it. You'll be amazed by how much they eat then!

dontstophelping · 19/09/2017 12:20

It was stealth. Grin

I feel guilty as it was a present from my Mum and she was so excited about it.

So I want to try and use it.

I tried spiralising with ds who's 3 and he said "yuk, it's still a carrot even if it's curly." Grin

FluffyMcCloud · 19/09/2017 12:21

I use mine 3-4 times a week! I love spirally courgette Grin

Oblomov17 · 19/09/2017 12:36

I eat low carb. I eat a lot of courgette. But I don't have a spiraliser.
when I have rarely bought the packets of spiralised courgette from Tesco or Sainsbury's etc I found them tasteless and went to Mush.

I use a potato peeler and get long strips of courgette. I prefer it that way.

I found them mushy too.

I was wondering if there was some magic trick I was missing to turn it in to pasta!

OP posts:
NannyR · 19/09/2017 12:51

I use mine fairly regularly, but I agree that spiralised courgettes do not in any way replace pasta! I use mine to spiralise sweet potatoes, toss them in oil and oven bake, carrots and beetroot for salad, courgettes topped with cheese and grilled like a gratin.

purplecorkheart · 19/09/2017 13:13

I have one that I was given as a gift. It is in the garage gathering dust. I keep meaning to drop it into the local charity shop but they have at least five already so I am not sure it would be too welcome.

AmayaBuzzbee · 19/09/2017 13:20

I put my bolognese/other sauce on non-cooked courgetti. The heat from the sauce will cook the courgetti perfectly when tossed a little.

Gottagetmoving · 19/09/2017 13:29

We used ours once. Was very keen to get one too. I don't know why I keep making the mistake of buying gadgets and then never using them again.
Seemed a good idea at the time.

Lenl · 19/09/2017 15:27

I think I want a food processor. I want something to whizz up fish cakes and the like and also something that can chop/slice so I can have celeriac dauphinoise for dinner every night

I am worried I think I want it but that I wouldn't really use it. Do people use their food processers?

HeatedCatFurniture · 19/09/2017 15:40

I use mine about once a week. Love courgetti. Key is to salt it after spiralising, then rinse well and squeeze the fuck out of it. Cool in a pan with olive oil until hot through. It will not be mushy.

5rivers7hills · 19/09/2017 16:19

Do people use their food processors

I do, all the time.

So much easier for grating (carrots, cheese, anything) and I use it a lot for whizzing stuff like pesto, salsa or curry pastes up or chopping stuff like herbs or nuts and making banana 'ice cream'. I also use the blender a lot for soup.

If I don't care how things look (like I'm going to make soup and blend it) I chuck everything into the FP to be chopped up. Work of moments to make veg soup then!

I'd like to chop onions in it but they go too small for me and don't seem to fry very well when I do them in the FP.

The jugs and attachments in mine can go in top shelf of the dishwasher so easy to clean. The base lives out all the time so it's dead easy to use.

Imfinehowareyou · 19/09/2017 16:26

Love mine. My favourite is sweet potato which I spiralise, toss in oil and roast. For last ten mins I crack an egg or two on top. Its gorgeous! My courgette is never mushy and I don't do anything other than spiralise and fry for a few mins.

thecatsthecats · 19/09/2017 16:43

Oblomov - I do the same. Takes about 30s to do one courgette, and easy to clean. My spiraliser went to the junk shop.

Catsrus · 19/09/2017 16:52

Ours gets used all the time, dd was trying to convince me to get one of the bigger ones last week, I pointed out that she could get herself one for her uni house but I was quite happy with the hand one that fits in the drawer. I think it's a brilliant little gadget and often have a meal where I've used it. Apart from the obvious courgette "pasta" we use it to make ribbons of harder veg, like carrot, for stir fry. We do eat a humongous amount of veg though.
