To not trust what my GP has said

Bit of background my 14 month old son started to get poorly last tues and we ended up at a and e with him by the Thursday with trouble breathing. Diagnosed chest infection and given amoxicillin and inhaler. Breathing had improved however still wheezy when next due for inhaler. However now he has started to come out in a rash / pimples appearing all over him especially around his mouth nappy and hands some of which have turned into really soar looking blisters. Took him to our drs today and he didn't seem too concerned didn't really look at his spots and just checked his chest said his infection is getting better just keep on with inhaler. We said really we had come as we were concerned about the spots/rash and he said that it's just because of his infection and gave some anti itch cream.
I do have slight anxiety but I feel really uneasy and worried as I have never known DS to come out like this due to an infection before. Do you think my anxiety is just in overdrive, DH is one for always trusting what the Dr says but I'm thinking he's been misdiagnosed Sad

Sounds like hand foot and mouth to me

Changerofname987654321 · 18/09/2017 20:07

My daughter chicken pox started in the nappy area.

dementedpixie · 18/09/2017 20:08

Chickenpox isn't usually on the hands though

WhiteFeatherHeather · 18/09/2017 20:08

Yes see I was thinking that too or chixken pox both of which I know there's not alot I can do for but I'd like to know he's really unsettled too. I did say are you sure it's not pox though and he said no as they usually start on the trunk. Getting a gp appointment is so hard ay our practise I feel like we've been rushed out!

I say trust your gut.

Crumbs1 · 18/09/2017 20:10

What is your actual concern? It's a rash and most clear up spontaneously regardless of whether viral, antibiotic related, washing powder or hand foot and mouth/chicken pox (although varicella is very distinctive). I'd wait and see. If he becomes unwell over and above his wheezing then take him back but the actual label isn't important.

Agree it sounds like hf&m. My daughter has just had it for the second time and as we didn't know you could get it more than once we thought it was chicken pox initially

ParsimonyThyme · 18/09/2017 20:12

First thought was hand foot & mouth. Our dr also misdiagnosed and said it was a reaction to something and DS was ok to go to nursery. They were not amused!

Valeriemalorie · 18/09/2017 20:13

Go back to the doctor tomorrow. In my experience they will always fit a baby in.

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 18/09/2017 20:14

I always say trust your instincts. No one knows your kids better than you.

WhiteFeatherHeather · 18/09/2017 20:15

I know that lable doesn't really matter as there's not alot we can do Sad I'd just like to know what he has I suppose And it does worry me that hes not had a reaction like this before after having bronchiolitis and chest infections every month last winter! Thankyou, I worry far too much just can't wait for him to be right again!!

Take him to another dr if you are worried. Always trust your gut

tocas · 18/09/2017 20:17

Even if it is hand foot and mouth, don't worry unless your son seems unwell. If he doesn't seem well then by all means take him back to a doctor but if he is fine then don't worry. Also there are no exclusion guidelines for hf&m as long as the child is well enough to go to nursery or school then they can Smile hope your son is better soon OP

LetZygonsbeZygones · 18/09/2017 20:18

I'd go back to your GP. I'm no expert but the rash you describe doesn't sound viral in its distribution or blisteryness. Any rash I've had from antibiotics has been very itchy and has ranged from raised up bumps to fine rashes on my chest and stomach and back.. poor little DS. Follow your instincts and try see another GP.

Applesandpears56 · 18/09/2017 20:18

Ps google amoxicillin rash just to rule that out

Userwhocouldntthinkofagoodname · 18/09/2017 20:19

If the infection is getting better hen try not to worry. Rashes clear up on their own.

WhiteFeatherHeather · 18/09/2017 20:23

I have just Googled amoxicillin rash, just gonna jot that down on my list of worries haha. I'm terrible, but think I'll try for another appointment in the morning. Thankyou

I'll see how he is 1st hopefully he'll be his usual mischievous self and I won't need to!

A lot of the time (especially with virally small children) you won't get a definitive diagnosis.

If you are worried he is more unwell or the rash is getting worse then go back to the doctor.

If you just want a diagnosis on an improving rash then i would consider carefully if you want to go.

codswallopandbalderdash · 18/09/2017 20:28

Sounds like hand foot and mouth to me, except it isn't usually itchy. Looks like early chickenpox spots though. When DS had it he was really cranky and unwell 3 days before spots appeared. We went to our GP who basically said it seemed like the start of something like chickenpox or hand, foot and mouth. And the spots started in his nappy area too

JustMeeAgain · 18/09/2017 20:33

Sounds like hf&m. When dd had hf&m it was inside her mouth too like little ulcers but she was really unwell with it (vomitting/temp). Seek a second opinion if you don't trust your gp.

RebeccaWrongDaily · 18/09/2017 20:41

post viral rash?
