I know Faye is now more commonly used, but Fay is the original, correct?

According to this site it is a derivative of midddle English 'faie' coming from the Latin 'fata', like Fata Morgana/Morgan Le Fay. Faye and Fae are alternative spellings.

Tazerface · 18/09/2017 17:27

Also here it talks about it being a boy's name, Gaelic in origin.

That site seems a little inaccurate, as 'le Fay' is not part of the given name.

It also does not account for why it is not recorded in (English) use as a girls given name until the late 19th century, when it appeared, as a diminutive of Faith, transferring to a given name in its own right.

The homonym 'fae' is an unrelated vocabulary word.

The boy's name verse (which I also think contains inaccuracies) links it to 'faith' origin.

I work with a Fei, pronounced Fay.

RonSwansonsMoustache · 18/09/2017 19:14

I know a Fay - born around 1993.

liquidrevolution · 18/09/2017 19:58

I prefer Fay. Was in my top five favourite girls names.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 18/09/2017 20:00

I've known a few Fays but don't think I've ever met a Faye, I'd go with the former personally but I don't think it matters, both are accepted. Sort of like Ann and Anne.

Fireinthegrate · 18/09/2017 20:01

Surely it can be spelt either way, like Tracy or Tracey. I know people with both spelling of Fay, Faye, Tracy and Tracey

CherriesInTheSnow · 18/09/2017 20:02

My DD is Faye, originally spelled Fae as that was our inspiration but a midwife in the hospital pronounced it "Fee" so we decided to take the "Y" our of Robyn (her mn) and had Faye. I love Fae and I love Faye but Fay has a bit of a dfferent/less pretty vibe to me for some reason!

F A Y is the original spelling of Fay

F A Y E is the original spelling of Faye
