Things to do in Newcastle

I can't find anything to do near Newcastle Metro Arena at the weekend either side of a 1pm Saturday concert. They are 7 year olds. Any suggestions? Any great swimming pools? We are completely ignorant to the area.
Please help!

Discovery Museum?

SandBlue · 18/09/2017 12:07

Discovery museum (free), centre for life (£££), Leazes Park.
Trip out to Tynemouth beach and the aquarium.
Never been, but Wet and Wild, again out on the coast.

LocoMoco · 18/09/2017 12:09

The life centre is great and 2 mins away from the arena

fruitofthenight · 18/09/2017 12:10

Hancock museum, discovery museum and centre for life are good and the first two are free. Theres Eldon Lesiure thats a short walk that has climbing walls, bowling and softplay.

Winteriscomingneedmorewood · 18/09/2017 12:10

Hancock museum - its free. Metro to Haymarket. .

MinnowAndTheBear · 18/09/2017 12:11

The Seven Stories Children's Book museum is fab!

MuddlingMackem · 18/09/2017 12:15

The Hancock Museum and Exhibition Park are near to each other and to Haymarket metro.

The Discovery Museum is well worth a visit and is within easy walking distance of the arena. Decent cafe and also has a packed lunch area.

Centre for Life is probably a bit expensive if you're out elsewhere in the middle of the day as I think it's only open until 5.

How are you travelling there?

chezbot · 18/09/2017 13:17

This coming weekend? If I had 7yos I'd be at m.ents24.com/newcastle-upon-tyne-events/leazes-park/jurassic-kingdom-where-dinosaurs-come-to-life/4977236

Elmo230885 · 18/09/2017 13:22

Beamish outdoor museum isn't a long drive away. Last time I went (a year ago) when you bought a ticket you got access for a full year so if you don't get round you can go back on the two days. Obviously only useful if you are driving!

Elmo230885 · 18/09/2017 13:23

Sorry misread the message, thought you were staying over on the Saturday!

PotteringAlong · 18/09/2017 13:26

As everyone else has said, discovery or Hancock museum for free. Centre for life is brilliant but quite expensive.

If you go down onto the riverside the quayside seaside is still there. Go into the Baltic.

Ditsy1980 · 18/09/2017 13:28

Centre for life is the closest to the arena but as others have said quite pricey.
The museums are free but both a fair way walk from the arena

ArbitraryName · 18/09/2017 13:30

The discovery museum is close to the centre for life.

The Baltic is not very far from the metro arena either.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 18/09/2017 13:45

Discovery museum
Seven Stories
Centre for Life
Great North Museum
Castle Keep and Black Gate
Eldon Square Sports Centre
Open Top bus
Head out on the metro to Tynemouth or Whitley Bay (leisure pool at Whitley bay has slides, waves etc)
23rd September onwards there's a dinosaur exhibition in leazes park.

MuddlingMackem · 18/09/2017 16:47

The Baltic is in Gateshead, so on the other side of the river and, if you're walking, it's a serious slog back up the riverbank! Grin

Hairyhat · 18/09/2017 17:00

Thanks all they sound great. Yeah we are staying Friday and Saturday night so there for two full days. I knew mn would provide the answer!

By the way, the Hancock Museum and the Great North Museum are the same place. Hancock is the old name. The locals still call the GNM the Hancock.

If you're here for two days then I would definitely recommend heading to the coast. Tynemouthnis very pretty but the Leisure Pool and the Aquarium at Whitney Bay are good and relatively close by each other. You could then walk along to St Mary's Lighthouse for a visit and some rock pooling.

Hairyhat · 18/09/2017 22:34

Cheers guys. I'm looking forward to our visit more now

PotteringAlong · 19/09/2017 10:21

If you're there Sunday morning there is a brilliant Sunday morning market on the quayside that's well worth going to.

Hairyhat · 20/09/2017 12:39

Thanks Pottering we are there Sunday morning and I love markets so that's a bonus. Just hope the 7 year olds feel the same ha ha

Sayyouwill · 20/09/2017 13:29

The market food is a winner 👌🏻

Also seven stories is amazing

ArbitraryName · 20/09/2017 15:57

They do free art activities for children at the weekend in the Baltic. So you could combine that with the market.

alseb · 20/09/2017 16:28

Exhibition Park, it's a five minute walk from the Hancock Museum. Great equipment for children to play on, cafe where you can sit in the rare Geordie sunshine, there's also a lake with ducks to feed. Jesmond Dene has some lovely walks, waterfall, pets corner, cafe.

Hairyhat · 25/09/2017 13:11

Fantastic guys thanks 👍
