To think a handy person for a day would be a great birthday present?

It's my birthday in a fortnight. Dh and DM have both asked for ideas. I said what I really wanted was a handy person for a day to do all the annoying jobs on my mental to to list. They both poo pooed this as not a proper present so I've had to give them other ideas but aibu to think actually I don't want any more stuff, I just want the stuff I I have to work properly? It's stuff like the towel rail in the downstairs loo rehanging and the thingy that switches the water from the bath to the shower sorting out so you don't have to use a rubber glove and all your strength. Oh and the shoe rack fixing so the drawer actually works and doesn't fall on to the floor when you open it. I could do these things myself eventually, but it'd be a treat not to need to

That is a fantastic idea! I would love that too - anyway what is the point of them asking what you want if they are going to ignore it?

Return what they get you and book you handyman, I'll back you up!

MidniteScribbler · 18/09/2017 10:33

This would probably be the best present that anyone could ever give me.

EZA15 · 18/09/2017 10:33

I absolutely love that idea. My DH does this to me - ask me what I want for my birthday if I reply a textbook (i'm back at college) or a new iron he automatically refuses as he doesn't feel it's a proper present! Then why ask?!!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 18/09/2017 10:35

Sounds brilliant to me. Ask again Grin

TonySoppyrano · 18/09/2017 10:37

Best present idea EVER.

Dairymilkmuncher · 18/09/2017 10:38

Sounds like a great idea! It's my birthday coming up ish and I want this, how about we both hire a handyman for ourselves and pretend they are birthday presents 🎁

ragged · 18/09/2017 10:40

That's really cool. We had a senior Admin bot who also did woodwork; we gave her a portable drill when she left our workplace. Someone who could act as PA AND do your DIY; GoldDust!

blueobsessive · 18/09/2017 10:41

We gave something like this to sil. In London there is a business called handysquad who specialise in this sort of thing. It's not cheap but they are reliable. They will also show you how to do things if you ask nicely.

longestlurkerever · 18/09/2017 10:45

Thanks everyone. I think I'm just going to book the handy person myself. Dh got a bonus recently and we have turned it into a weekend away budget but we might have gone away anyway so I reckon we can afford it.

Fantastic! Ask for an afternoon tea token from your DH/DM, and have a lovely day getting the house all mended then a treaty tea.

BackforGood · 18/09/2017 11:01

I would LOVE this, but, like you, get poo - hoo'd by anyone likely to buy me a present. End up opening some stuff I don't want or need and will end up storing for a while then giving away.

TheEmmaDilemma · 18/09/2017 11:13

That would be a magnificent gift.

longestlurkerever · 18/09/2017 11:22

Hurrah. Have booked Stan the handyman.£50 for 2 hours. Is a start, anyway. If he's good he can come again.

I would love it too! You can get one through
www.checkatrade.com or uhandyman.co.uk

What a great idea! I'm looking around now thinking of all the small jobs...

holdthewine · 18/09/2017 11:26

Ah sorry should have RTFT! I see you've got one but hopefully the links will help someone else.

Newtssuitcase · 18/09/2017 11:26

I am so going to do this next birthday/christmas.. Its a fab idea.

CaptainHammer · 18/09/2017 11:27

It's a great idea. I've done similar for my mums birthday before and she loved it!

CaptainHammer · 18/09/2017 11:28

Also it kind of annoys me when people ask what you want and then say it's not a proper present or buy something else anyway. Why bother asking?!

GahBuggerit · 18/09/2017 11:30

This is the best present idea EVER

Im going to do this for my Mums birthday. Thanks OP!!!

GinGeum · 18/09/2017 11:32

Well done booking it, it's a great idea! Every year for my birthday I ask DP to take a few days off to do 'jobs'. He always does, works great!

BackforGood · 18/09/2017 11:39

Totally agree CaptainHammer - my sister does this all the time. Never approves of my choice of what I wold like as it isn't what she would like, then ends up filling up my house with crap I don't want.

lidoshuffle · 18/09/2017 11:46

I got a day's gardening from my best friend and it was the best present I got. She did all the hard stuff like digging out, pruning, tying back, shaping the lawn, not just the easy poncey bits.

I keep looking out my windows and admiring how good it all looks now!

Lolly49 · 18/09/2017 11:47

What a great idea.I am leaving my IPad open at this page and hope the family glance at it after all Christmas is on it's way.
