WIBU about fish bones in a children's meal?

Genuinely curious about whether IABU.

Went out for a meal tonight with DH and two DC. DS2 had plaice goujons. He was happily eating away when he fished something out of his mouth - two fish bones. One was about half an inch long, the other about 1.5 inches.

At the end of the meal I raised it with the waitress who told the manager. He asked to see the bones, apologised and took the meal off our bill.

DH thinks I shouldn't have said anything and that bones are part and parcel of eating fish. He seemed a bit embarrassed that I brought it up with the restaurant staff. I think there shouldn't be any bones in a meal served to children, especially when the fish is in breadcrumbs and therefore difficult to see properly...

Wibu?

Yanbu

Most fish products will have a disclaimer saying they cannot guarantee that there won't be any bones.

Aph413 · 16/09/2017 20:43

I'd say no yanbu. In an adults meal of course you'd expect bones, at the very least you'd expect a warning on the menu so you could decide if your DC IS old enough not to choke. But that might just be me

Rheged · 16/09/2017 20:44

Well, it's really not idea. But usually there's a disclaimer somewhere on the menu. Something like 'although great care is taken to remove bones, some small ones may still remain'. Did you see anything like that?

ErrolTheDragon · 16/09/2017 20:45

YANBU. I wouldn't expect to find a bone in an adult goujon either, tbh, and definitely not in a kids meal. The manager obviously agreed.

People in the UK are generally too reticent about complaining in restaurants. If its something unsafe, like this or undercooked pork or poultry, people really should say something.

1.5" isn't a small fishbone in my book!

hidinginthenightgarden · 16/09/2017 20:47

I would be disappointed with a meal for children that had bones in. My DH has been put off fish for life because of finding bones in his fish.

Zapdos · 16/09/2017 20:50

There weren't any disclaimers on the menu.

I am vegetarian but cook fish at least twice a week for the DC. I always check for bones before cooking it!

It sounds like they were home made Goujons.
YANBU but this is a good easing to teach kiDS from a young age to eat proper food, ie actual fish and how to remove/ check for bones. Not that my two do, mind.

Zapdos · 16/09/2017 20:50

Yes it was a big bone!! The manager did look embarrassed.

I would have pointed it out so they could either put a disclaimer on the menu or check their supplier/kitchen methods.

Thanks. Good to know I wasn't overreacting!
