To be annoyed with noise pollution

I've gotten used to the supermarket playing music because a supermarket already has a fair amount of noise in it (trolleys squeaking, kids making noise, things being stocked on shelves).

But I went into two different banks yesterday (for the first time in a couple of months) & both were playing quite loud pop music. I am not 112, but I do not want to listen to Taylor Swift or whatever at the same volume they play it in some clothes shops when I'm doing my banking! One of the banks was playing sort of Cuban pop and I felt like the whole queue ought to have been dancing.

I asked why they were blasting music and the teller purses her lips and said "it's for your privacy". I pointed out that we'd all staggered on without it for the 45 or so years I recall going into banks (no post office accounts for kids here) & she said "maybe banks used to have more private rooms?" (Because she was either very dim or very young - she looked about 25 so ...)

Anyway - does this annoy anyone else? Do we have to have sound everywhere we go? What'll it be next? Nas Jones in Waterstones? Katy Perry in the antique shop?

I don't think you're being unreasonable. I'm not 112 either.

Not only do I have misophonia, I also hate uninvited noise in general and I believe it's related to the very severe migraines that I have. There's no need for so much noise in every day life. There's no need for people to slam doors, smash things around, shout when they could speak, blast music in buildings or from cars.

I'm not innocent in all of this, I know that sometimes I make noise that I don't need not. Not claiming that I don't, but I take as much care as I can to minimise the amount of noise that I do make.

I enjoy quiet. I enjoy the contemplation it allows - when did people stop enjoying genuine quiet time and listening to their surroundings? Why do so many people have to fill the sound void by making completely unnecessary noise?

I get migraines too, though I'm much more light sensitive than noise. But I was feeling one coming on yesterday and I doubt the racket helped.

It's just the constant over-stimulation. It's not necessary.
