To think I shouldn't have to do the cats job for it?

I don't ask a lot of the cat. Generally it has a pretty cushy number, it gets fed, petted, sleeps when and where it wants. It has me well trained.

The one thing it is good at is catching things.

So why oh why do I find myself catching a shrew by the tail to take it outside, while the cat is looking for it in completely the wrong place?

I feel it might be trying to train me to bring it live food instead of these tins and sachets....

Because the cat's job is to be superior and demanding, not to kill anything. Speak to it nicely and it may condescend to leave half a shrew on your pillow.

lol

If having a word works, let me know how you do it. I've just had to pick up a scabby rat deposited on the kitchen floor Confused

Fabellini · 16/09/2017 10:12

Did your cat leave you one of these?

I heard cats don't like the taste of shrews, and that's why they bring offerings of shrew much more often than mouse/bird/rabbit.

You can borrow my two if you want. Once the poor little cute thing is in the house they work in pairs....much like velociraptors! I'm jumping in the middle to try and save small fluffy animal. Bastards.

Fabellini Grin.

Fabellini.....liking that a great deal!

Late lamented Riverscat was not a great contributor to the household. Her crowning glory was when a mouse arrived in the Christmas tree, not only did she not catch it but I came down one night to find them actually cuddled up together Confused
Riverskitten is showing promise practicing on spiders

Is your cat trying to teach you to hunt? Apparently cats do that to their owners. If so, it has been successful

LeoTimmyandVi · 16/09/2017 10:25

My girl cat bought in a mouse last week - released it in the living room and then stood back and let it escape in to the under the stairs cupboard. Humane mousetrap has been down for a week and no sign. I fear the next thing I know will be the smell of rotting corpse or baby mice everywhere - bloody cats!

Archfarchnad · 16/09/2017 10:29

Becareful what you wish for. Archcat recently scarfed down an entire mouse - blood all over the kitchen floor - then came up to the bedroom wailing pitifully in a 'mum, don't feel well' way and puked everywhere. Not delicate little hairbally puke, but major league dark slurry mixed with bits of mouse, all over the edge of the bed. He felt so much better afterwards and went straight out hunting, while we were attempting to disinfect clean the bedclothes. There's no middle way with cats.

Our cat is a terrible hunter, she rarely manages to catch anything.

Yesterday she very proudly unleashed trotted into the living room carrying and dropped a butterfly at my feet. It flew away and she couldn't re-catch it Confused

Penny4UrThoughts · 16/09/2017 11:20

Fabellini I love that! Sadly she didn't, I just checked..

brasty, I think you might be right. She used to bring in live birds, but now only dead ones, so I think she has given up on my catching birds. She's moved on to small furry beasts - and I did catch one...

Arch, that is possibly the single most disgusting thing I have heard about a cat catching prey. I sincerely hope it's a one-off!

Indiana, thats sad but adorable all at the same time!

One of mine proudly brings in earthworms. Confused surely there's no challenge there?

CigarsofthePharoahs · 16/09/2017 11:39

Mine is now to old for hunting.
That's her excuse anyway.
I did once see her chomp down a mouse whole. Urgh!
I wish she'd go back to keeping the crane flies at bay!

msrisotto · 16/09/2017 11:46

I feel the same way about brushing. My (shorthair) cat demands to be brushed, really shouts at me, loves it but she can bloody well do it herself! Why harass me?

Mittens1969 · 16/09/2017 11:53

One of my 4 cats went through a phase a few months ago of bringing in dead birds. On one occasion, just after bringing the DDs home from school, we found a dead bird on the living room floor. The shock on DDs' faces was actually very funny, obviously I had to get rid of it pretty sharpish lol.

Bird feathers are gross, I absolutely hate having to clean those up, yuck!
