To report our neighbours for their loud dog?

Hi all.

Our neighbour's dog has been driving me bananas since we moved in 18 months ago. DH somehow manages to tune it out and my one year old DS doesn't seem disturbed by it, but it drives me crackers... It doesn't bark for long periods, but it's frequent, loud and late. Sometimes as late as midnight! Their house is next to a recreation ground, so big open space and it's so loud and echoes around.

We only hear it when it's out in the garden. My mum who's a dog owner, thinks that it's shut indoors all the time so barks whenever it's allowed out.

We live on a housing estate and there are loads of other homes nearby who surely must hear it too!

Anyone had a similar problem and found reporting it to local Council helped?

Thanks! X

In my experience, any call to the council is going to result in them asking you to keep a noise diary - when, and how long, each time it barks, for a period of 1-2 weeks.

You may as well start such a diary now, and call them in a couple of weeks to report, because then you'll have it done.

What faith said - keep a noise diary for a couple of weeks and then call the council. It's not acceptable for your neighbours to allow their dog to do this.

I don't live in the UK, but I have been through a similar thing.

I pursued it with the relevant authority here (in my case the local council). I refused to let it drop (although the council was surprisingly good, even if the process is a bit slower than I'd have liked). The people are now moving out apparently because of this according to my last conversation with the council liaison. In the meantime, they've taken the dogs elsewhere as they're too lazy and stupid to bother fixing the actual issue.

I had started keeping a diary from the first day I noticed the barking, which came in handy, as did some recordings I did on my phone. I always made sure I made my calls to the council near an open door or window while the dogs were barking, as it was undeniable extra proof that it was happening.

Good luck! It can be soul destroying to be subjected to that noise because some people are feral scum who don't care to train their dogs properly.

Had a similar problem a few years ago. Was resolved when another neighbour who had just had a baby 3 days before completely lost the plot and stormed round to bang on their door. She was scary but it worked!

Sorry, not helpful unless you have a sleep deprived new mum around.

Does making this this type of complaint have the disclosed if you sell your house?

LadyTsunade · 16/09/2017 15:55

I feel for you! Next-door-but-one has two dogs that they lock in a conservatory all day and leave them to howl their pipes out whilst the owners are at work all day. If you think some kind of neglect is going on ie theyre not being walked/ignored then maybe RSPCA is worth a shot?

specialsubject · 16/09/2017 16:19

Start the diary and raise a complaint. You could be stuck with this for years.

You could just try a polite letter posted to them anonymously, asking them to take action. Unlikely to work with people like this but gives you credit with the next step.

Doramaybe · 16/09/2017 16:22

I have often wondered if these dog owners are profoundly deaf or what.

Why does it not bother them also. Fair question I think.

LadyTsunade · 16/09/2017 18:49

Doramaybe - maybe a lot of them are out when their dogs' are going at it... or selective hearing lol

bethan2 · 16/09/2017 20:28

Thanks so much for all your replies. Very helpful. They shout at the dog for barking sometimes. I have considered reporting it to the RSPCA but I read somewhere that they would only remove it if it's basic needs are not being met (eg food) x

I loathe dog owners who allow their dogs to make a racket.

My neighbour's dog is like this. Doesn't bark that often but when it does it is so loud. it barks every night at about 11 pm . I hate the little bugger.

I used to love dogs but I'm growing to hate them because they are bloody everywhere , shitting and barking , and so few people seem to manage their dogs.

Today one ran into my garden and straight into my house with its muddy paws everywhere !

The owner was very apologetic but she had no control whatsoever.

What's going on with dogs nowadays ?
