For getting annoyed when people say that shops don't cater for "normal bodies" (plus size) yet it's actually difficult to find smaller clothes?

Lately my FB has been bombarded by George Jeans adds, why I have no idea... But I have read the comments and the common denominator is that they complain that either shops don't make bigger clothes or the models aren't "normal". However most shops don't carry anything smaller than an 8!

Never in my life noticed this till I went shopping with my son's tiny size 6 girlfriend but you are right. Everything swamped her.

pennysnow · 15/09/2017 22:08

Go into H & M and New Look and Next. They are full of small sizes.

silverbell64 · 15/09/2017 22:11

Depends how petite you are. You are obviously petite, almost child like in your stature, then go to that department.

Funny enough I was in primark the other day and the racks were full of size 6.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 15/09/2017 22:12

Next?!

Next sizing is huge.

I do think sizing is ridiculous. I wish stores would standardize and just label clothes with some actual measurements.

Sirzy · 15/09/2017 22:14

I am with you! And Asda sizing is very generous too which means even their size 8 is miles too big on me when I am an 8 in most places.

LittleWitch · 15/09/2017 22:15

Sizing is ridiculous. Even shoe sizes ain't what they used to be- I've been a size 4 all my life, except now I'm a size 3 Hmm. I'm pretty sure my feet haven't shrunk Confused.

ItsAllAboutThePace · 15/09/2017 22:16

Vanity sizing

A size 12 has got huge. Ridiculous. Just so nobody has to adit they are in a 14

FairlyConstantNameChanger · 15/09/2017 22:16

YADNBU. It is so annoying.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 15/09/2017 22:16

Cross post.

silver, what is a Primark size 6, though?

I'm a size 14 most places I shop, but a 10 in places like Next or Gap. Stores aren't under any obligation to standardize sizes (or, it seems, even to be honest with their size charts). You can't assume because there are small numbers on a label, that they'll therefore fit a small (but not child-sized) person.

Ummmmgogo · 15/09/2017 22:17

yanbu. try miss Selfridge top shop and river island.

revolution909 · 15/09/2017 22:17

Sizing is not standarized at all! But that's not the point. In a way some people think that smaller sizes are "privileged" clothes wise, but not every shop caters for them.

FairlyConstantNameChanger · 15/09/2017 22:18

YY to smaller people being told they are lucky all the time. Actually it can be a nightmare finding clothes to fit. I find it incredibly difficult to gain weight and keep it on and the lack of understanding and advice out there is terrible.

revolution909 · 15/09/2017 22:19

Gap is MASSIVE... and their sizing has changed, i have some jeans from almost 20 years ago and some from last year, both the same size but the one from 20 years ago is MUCH smaller

OP posts:
Sandyfeet101 · 15/09/2017 22:20

Topshop and Primark stock size 4. Also I think H and M does XS. I agree that Next sizing is large compared to others.

revolution909 · 15/09/2017 22:20

@FairlyConstantNameChanger that's exactly how I feel! And don't get me started with the "real women have curves"... we're all real!!

OP posts:
mogulfield · 15/09/2017 22:21

I feel this pain!! I'm a size 6 and mega short (5 foot)... some shops say XS/S and it's an 8-10 which swamps me.
I have resorted to H and M kids section for jeans (fit perfectly) and brands like super dry, hollister, jack wills... its been trial and error over the years! I stay away from joules, George and next, nothing fits!

Nancy91 · 15/09/2017 22:22

Next, Asda, Sainsbury, and Primark size 8 clothes are more like size 12 and I can't wear anything from there. Does my head in.

I agree larger people have more clothes available to them in high street shops.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 15/09/2017 22:23

It's proportions as well, isn't it? The average figure has changed. And the 'desirable' figure changes every few years, too. So I have clothes from my mum from the 70s that are cut for a woman with a very different shape from some of my 1950s dress patterns - and both of those are unlike the clothes I can easily buy on the high street.

It'd be so easy and nice if you could just look at a size chart and see how clothes would fit your body, instead of always having to guess.

MorrisZapp · 15/09/2017 22:23

Which shops don't sell small clothes? I'm aghast that top shop sell a four, what would a top shop size four even look like?

FairlyConstantNameChanger · 15/09/2017 22:24

Yes! I had a thread recently as have been trying so hard to gain weight and finding it so, so difficult. One of my main motivations is I am sick of finding it so hard to buy clothes. The lack of help to gain weight is shocking. You just get told you are lucky or to eat more (like I haven't tried that) despite the fact I know I am underweight.

Ummmmgogo · 15/09/2017 22:24

a lot of people are healthy at size four. they tend to be very short though!

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 15/09/2017 22:24

YABU

Why is it annoying that people at the other end of the spectrum moan? I'm sure it's just as hard to find a size 24 as a size 4.

What an odd thing to get annoyed about. Direct your ire at the shops, perhaps?

Birdsgottafly · 15/09/2017 22:25

"silver, what is a Primark size 6, though?"

Primary sizing tends to be small, but there can be a discrepancy amongst the sizes.

A lot of shops do vanity sizing, so those that only go down to an 8, aren't small enough.

My DDs are between a (true) 6-8 and they don't have issues with being able to buy clothes on the high street.

Ummmmgogo · 15/09/2017 22:25

also why not be aghast at a size 24 existing? some are naturally a 4 but no-one is naturally a 24.

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 15/09/2017 22:25

Yup I've always been an 8 with a 4 foot ... this year I'm suddenly a 6 or lower and a size 3 foot ... with no weight loss HmmHmm
