To think 2 months to pay for a college trip is ridiculous?

DD is nearly 18 and has ASD. She's just come home from college and told me there's a trip to New York that's £1100 and would have to be paid by December. She just said "I know we can't afford it so I thought maybe next year and I can save up a bit too." It's probably because I'm poorly atm but I burst into tears because I would love so much for her to be able to go but £550 per month just before Christmas is unfeasible.

I'm surprised anyone can afford it at this short notice and especially so close Christmas! There's also the spending money too.

Poor organisation on the part of the college too if this is the first you've heard of it.

Is it mentioned in the prospectus?

I work for a private school, we have trips like this and give a year's notice and only require a small holding deposit - college is DBU.

YANBU. that's really expensive

Hillarious · 15/09/2017 16:18

You could manage a trip for the pair of you for that amount. It is bad organisation to give such short notice. Our school moved on to giving a year's advanced warning of forthcoming trips after giving five days' notice for £50 for a day trip. It didn't go down well with parents.

New York?! Is it educational?

TeenTimesTwo · 15/09/2017 16:28

I would be interested to know what he is studying that a long haul flight is necessary.

DD's college tried to do a NY trip for Travel&Tourism. We could afford it but said no as poor value for money and totally unnecessary. Not surprisingly they didn't get enough people so it was cancelled. They went to Iceland instead and saw the Northern lights.

This is for English A level. She's not given me much detail apart from they'd be visiting the ground zero museum.

Hmm sounds like the college fancied a jolly. Wtf has ground zero got to do with English. YANBU.

shakeyourcaboose · 16/09/2017 12:58

Is it an annual jolly? As DD says could always go next year?
