To not ask the same question back...

When you ask someone "How are you?" And they reply with "Good, thanks" and then don't ask the same question back, do you find that rude?

Yes, I find it very rude.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 14/09/2017 23:31

I never know what to say.
What does Debretts say on the matter?

MaroonPencil · 14/09/2017 23:33

I believe when someone says "How are you?" one is supposed to simply reply "how are you?" back. It sounds absolutely insane in practice though.

I usually say "Fine thanks! How are you!" Because I am common.

MaroonPencil · 14/09/2017 23:34

Oh I've got it muddled with How do you do, ignore me! Still sounds weird though.

The Bristolian approach negates any of this social juggling. Simply utter 'Riight' and the responder replies 'Riight'. 'Nuff said.

Fluffyears · 14/09/2017 23:55

Ah see in Scotland we have this sorted 'awright?' 'Aye awright'

MyBrilliantDisguise · 14/09/2017 23:59

MaroonPencil, it's "How do you do?" that you are supposed to repeat, not "How are you?"

ForagingForFaerieGold · 15/09/2017 00:04

Pity them for their lack of social graces and move on. Yes it's rude, but they clearly don't know any better Smile

loaferloveforyou · 15/09/2017 00:07

The British response is "good thanks, you?"

If some replied with "I'm ok thanks" and not ask how I am I would assume they were less than ok.

Seren85 · 15/09/2017 00:11

The NW version is "reet?" "Aye, reet?" "Aye". You can't just say "yes thanks" without asking back.

GreatFuckability · 15/09/2017 00:12

Yeah, in South Wales we have this down as

'Alright?'
'alright, you alright?'
'yeah, i'm alright'
and then we move on. and everyone is alright.

GreatFuckability · 15/09/2017 00:13

'alright' being pronounced as 'uh-riht' for the most part.

LondonLassInTheCountry · 15/09/2017 00:13

Yes. I say how are you back.... But when my partner is asked this question he very rarely asks back. I find it rude

I just do it the Cornish way
'Alright?'
'Yeh, you?'
'Yeh'

StepAwayFromCake · 15/09/2017 09:08

From an autistic POV, this drove me nuts until I understood that "How are you?" is not a genuine question. I mean, why ask it if you don't want to hear the answer? I expect people thought that I was very rude. And boring.

I had no problem with "How do you do?", because that is such obsolete language that it is a nonsense phrase. I eventually worked out that "How are you?" is equivalent to "How do you do?", but with a different, more complicated response. Wow!

Social skills, bloody minefield.

MorrisZapp · 15/09/2017 09:09

Middle class version 'I'm really well thanks'

GinGeum · 15/09/2017 09:14

I admit to getting a bit over excited and socially awkward as a result, and normally when someone says 'hi, how are you?' I say 'oh hi! How are you!' Blush
