About bloody throat infections....

Posting for traffic, because I'm feeling pretty miserable. Has an anyone had adult tonsillectomy years ago, and can you vouch for if it actually has reduced the amount of throat infections (tonsillitis, strep, whatever)?

I'm scared to request the surgery because I've heard it's major surgery, and my GP isn't keen, but I think I'm on around the 7th bout of tonsillitis this year. Sad I just don't want to have the surgery if it's likely I'll still get viruses and infections. I had glandular fever as a teen and every year I have multiple infections. GP keeps asking me why I'm run down - well, yes, I'm run down because I keep getting infections... Hmm

Yes me!!!! Teenage years screwed by tonsillitis and glandular fever, carried on affecting me during my career until I had 2 quinseys (abscesses) and they finally removed them.
Has been Miraculous,,, I think I've had 2 sore throats since ( 20 years ago) and neither of them were anything like as bad as tonsillitis ... I've not had chest infections or anything since

aquashiv · 14/09/2017 22:42

Me too. After a few quinsys that nearly killed me (😐exaggeration ) was fine. Two weeks recovery but I was eating normally very quickly.

Are you taking multivitamins?

My dd kept getting ulcers all over her mouth and strep thrust and 2 different doctors said don't worry she'll grow out if it. The 3rd doctor said get her vitamins, iron, zinc and selenium and she's been fine ever since.

LifeofClimb · 14/09/2017 22:59

Yep MrsJames.... I'm already taking multi-vits, on ferrous fumarate, vitamin d, and I also take extra magnesium/vit b12 when I'm not taking so many supplements...

I've also drastically reduced my tea intake to help my iron levels and no bueno :|

I'm 32, I've had the problem since I was 17 so I doubt I'll grow out of it Grin

No but following, I get it at least 7 times a year, which is miserable with 2 preschoolers and a part time job. GP told me you won't get referred to ENT unless 8 antibiotics prescriptions in 12 months. Unfortunately I react badly to most antibiotics so until he told me I used to not even bother going to dr. Now I go every time and just don't collect the prescription!

Guidance is five a year then refer.

mineofuselessinformation · 14/09/2017 23:08

Absolutely yes!
I had tonsillitis around every six weeks (it got to the point where I didn't go to the doctor, just dealt with the tonsil stones which were, for me the cause if the infections).
I'll be honest, the recovery was painful (I ended up with an infection, so couldn't even swallow the tiny codeine tablets... An anaesthetic spray sorted it.)
I've never looked back.
The amount of time I spent feeling unwell was ridiculous.

SpecialDelivery22 · 14/09/2017 23:27

I've never even had a cough since I got my permanently infected tonsil out (yes just one...they left the other 'healthy' one in)

LifeofClimb · 02/10/2017 22:21

I think my stones are the cause. Had another infection within 1 month!

I'm going to go and get a referral. I think this is around the 8th infection this year...
