Dds bedroom smells

thesqueezedlemon · 14/09/2017 17:52

Our boiler is in a cupboard in dds bedroom. It recently died and we had a new one fitted. For the last 2 months dds room has smelt of sweaty feet. She's only 9, is very clean and doesn't have sweaty feet.
I'm thinking that when the old boiler leaked. Water has got under the floorboards and has now gone stagnent. It's been like this for about 2 months. Will this dry by itself and the smell disappear. She had a new carpet a year ago and I really don't want to pull it up as we won't be able to get it back down and looking right again.
It is driving me insane. Poor dd!
Any advice?

You could try using a carpet cleaner that may help. I think they give a good deep clean. Make sure you spray loads of carpet cleaner on it.

ImTakingTheEssence · 14/09/2017 17:55

Diffusers, scented candles, plug in airfreshner, shake n vac windows open when room not used air it out!

Tensecondrule · 14/09/2017 17:59

Are you even meant to have boilers in bedrooms? Or is that outdated advice? They do sell those beads for absorbing damp (saw them in poundstretcher) so that will help absorb any leftover damp.

teaandtoast · 14/09/2017 18:01

Could it be a fishy smell rather than sweaty feet? Fishy smell = problem with wiring.

Nomorechickens · 14/09/2017 18:03

If you have damp under the floorboards you need to lift the carpet in that area and get it dried out. Can you find a friendly carpet fitter who would pop in after work and put it back properly, for a small fee?

Nomorechickens · 14/09/2017 18:05

Presumably you have a carbon monoxide detector in the room?
It's not a gas leak is it?

ShadowWeaver · 14/09/2017 18:11

Have you decorated recently? But and Q's Valspar paint had something missing out of it and it makes it smell weird. I found this out after accusing my DD of peeing the bed and not telling me Sad

Oh I don't know the man from British Gas didn't seem to think it would be a problem, when they said ours needed relocating because it would have cost thousands extra than just replacing the perfectly placed old one

bilbodog · 14/09/2017 18:21

Its not ideal to have a boiler in a bedroom but sometimes they have to be but you must get a carbon monoxide alarm just in case.

Paperclipmover · 14/09/2017 18:24

Please get an electrician in pronto. It could be a serious electrical fault, if as pp said it's more fishy than cheesy .

bridgetreilly · 14/09/2017 18:29

Try a dehumidifier?

bellabasset · 14/09/2017 18:45

I would try running a dehumidifier in her room when you are home and if you have damp that will soon become obvious, then clean the carpet, I use Vax. Also teaandtoast has a good suggestion to check the wiring. If it appears you have had a water leak from the boiler are you able to claim for a carpet from the insurance policy on your house.

Tensecondrule mentions boilers in bedrooms, I think it is allowed providing you service them regularly and have a carbon dioxide monitor in the bedroom.

Scented candles, diffusers, and air fresheners can affect breathing especially for anyone with asthma so not recommended these days.

thesqueezedlemon · 14/09/2017 20:05

Thanks for the replies. It's definately not fishy. Definately sweaty. Yes she has a carbon monoxide detector in the room. It's not ideal but couldn't afford to have it relocated. I'm hoping now it's getting colder and we have the heating on, if it is wet somewhere that will dry it out. If it persists I may have to pull the carpet up and investigate further. I haven't been able to locate the source of the smell so the entire carpet would need to come up. Arrgggh.
Don't really want to use anything chemical as dd has allergies. I did you some febreeze today while she wasn't here and the smell doesn't seem as bad.

Boilers are fine in bedrooms. Adding extra stink with candles, plug ins ( fire hazard) and other reeks won't help. Ditto febreze which is also a chemical.

Get the carpet up.

expatmigrant · 14/09/2017 20:47

I think you need to make sure that the new boiler has been properly fitted to make sure that there's not a slow water leak. Carpet might need to come up.

lalalalyra · 14/09/2017 20:59

If you have the heating on more then you might actually make the smell worse. You need to lift the carpet and find out if the leak is old or current and get it dried out properly.
