What the heck do I do now?

Short version (I hope)
Have been renting for three months between selling one house and buying another. Although I had a six month lease I had always said I would move out as soon as the house I was purchasing became available. Letting agent contacted me some weeks ago saying they had alternative tenants if we could agree a date for me moving out. This is great for me as it saves me paying three months rent for an empty house.

Told on Friday by my solicitor we would exchange on the property I was buying on Monday and move Thursday (today)I was asked to transfer the deposit to the solicitor. I transferred the whole of the house purchase price to the solicitor as I explained my mum was very ill so I needed to not worry about getting to a bank more than once.

I also, after talking to my solicitor gave notice on my rental property.
Heard nothing Monday but mum was fading fast so I didn't really give it much thought. Mum died Tuesday and I had a couple of calls from the solicitors about "queries elsewhere in the chain" but was at no time told the sale was in any doubt. My solicitor knew mum had just died.

Last night I was told the sale was not going through in the near future and we hadn't even exchanged. This is apparently due to a couple at the top of the chain divorcing and one party not cooperating.

I would normally have monitored this very closely, but,as I am finding, nothing I see normal when your mum just died. However giving notice on my tenancy still stands so as of next week I have nowhere to live.

I am beyond distraught about everything and do feel I should be able to challenge someone for not warning me of the situations gravity until last night. What do I do?

Can you find somewhere else to rent? There's no comeback on anyone until exchange on a sale/purchase.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

I really don't think you can blame anyone for not warning you though, you (understandably) were not engaging with the process, other people in the chain also had issues and the sale fell through. It happens. It's not anyone's fault.

Unfortunately I fear the circumstances have meant you were not in the loop. Had you realised sooner the exchange hadn't happened it would still have been too late for the rental. You need an urgent meeting with your solicitor to clarify the situation and any revised timescales. Did your dm rent or own anywhere you could use short-term? Would ll delay the relet? You need to prioritise your loss and arrangements in the meantime.
