To wonder why it was almost impossible to find a hotel room in London tonight?

And the train from the NE was Sardine-Ville!

Ended up booking a room (for the boss btw not me) at probably double the usual rate as everywhere across central london was full.

What is going on there tonight?!

Don't think anything particular going on

Just London is busy

Lovingmybear2 · 13/09/2017 21:11

My dh works on London mon to thurs for the last 10 years.

You book early like 2 weeks ahead and beware Wimbledon.

Apart from that completely normal.

And forget central London book Barking, other suburbs that's why they have the tube.

Sounds like you and your boss are country mice. Grin

It's completely normal

carjacker1985 · 13/09/2017 21:11

London fashion week starts on Friday.

TakeMe2Insanity · 13/09/2017 21:15

Football champions league thing I think

PollyFlint · 13/09/2017 21:15

Spurs are playing Dortmund at Wembley as we speak so that's a few thousand extra visitors already from Germany.

Some of them will probably fly back to Germany on charter flights tonight but plenty will be staying over tonight and going back tomorrow, or having a few days in London to make the most of the trip. Nowhere near enough to book out the whole of central London but probably enough to make a difference in combination with all the other stuff that's happening in London at any given time.

The Premier Inn at Euston has rooms, good location if you're coming into Kings Cross. It's £199 which isn't unusual for there on a weeknight.

TripAdvisor shows lots of availability but rates are higher than usual. Can't find anything in particular happening, London does get very busy in the week.

PollyFlint · 13/09/2017 21:19

carjacker Oh yes, I'd forgotten about that. That will definitely have an impact even a few days beforehand.

But as PPs have said, central London hotel rooms are often a nightmare; DP and I both have to go for work quite often and last minute bookings are frequently extortionate.

Amanduh · 13/09/2017 21:42

Football and LFW coming up. Also, it's London

Sciurus83 · 13/09/2017 21:46

Yeah that's normal, need to book a couple.of weeks before

KentMum2008 · 13/09/2017 21:50

Slightly off topic, but DH tried to book us a weekend away to the south coast today. We want to go Friday and come home Sunday, but nearly every hotel we looked at was fully booked. The only ones with rooms were either really minging or reeeeally expensive. He's currently swaying towards the really expensive Grin
How anyone can say the tourism industry is dying is beyond me.

Dapplegrey2 · 13/09/2017 21:51

What about booking an Air B&B or does your boss definitely want a hotel?

DropZoneOne · 13/09/2017 21:51

London usually busy in September, it's good for corporates, school groups and events as well as general leisure business still being strong due to exchange rates (cheap for US and Euro countries to come here).

January and August different story, loads of cheap (for London) rooms then

Also depends where you're looking - Kensington has reasonable prices for chain hotels, Paddington budget hotels but rooms are teeny.

Who says the tourism industry is dying? Visitor figures for the U.K. are excellent!
