HELP posting for traffic maggots falling from the ceiling

purpleprincess24 · 13/09/2017 19:44

Sorry for posting hear but I'm freaking out and need some advice

Three weeks ago we discovered rats in our garage, the council came out, put some rat poison down and since then we have discovered five dead rats, which is really not something you want to encounter first thing in the morning!

Anyway for the last few days we've been aware of a new scent of eau d'rat in our ensuite bathroom. Council came down again but due to the location they can't get to the body so we just have to wait for it to decompose, which should be about three weeks.

Feeling sick yet??? It gets better ....

Our DS's bedroom is directly below the bathroom and last night maggots started raining down from the ceiling lights (recessed downlighters), falling everywhere, onto his bed, carpet, clothes. I didn't know about it until today as he just decamped to the spare room (he's 25)

I'm starting to loosing it, the rats I could barely cope with and now this ..... what can I do to kill the vile things? The problem is, even if you take the light fitting out you can't really get your hand in enough to do much .. we tried earlier with some fly killer but it doesn't seem to have had much if an effect and I was almost sick as loads fell out

I'm close to moving out, my 85 year old DP's might find me and two dogs on their doorstep

On the plus side this is helping my diet no end 🤢 although I'm spending a fortune on air freshness

Can you pull the downlights out & spray into the ceiling with Raid Fly Killer. We had hundreds of maggots in our garage & a good spray with the fly killer killed them instantly.

AdoraBell · 13/09/2017 21:17

I think goingtotown has the right idea. I would firstly invest in a fully covering set of overalls. And gloves. And a full face mask. And safety glasses. And a large bottle of vodka for afterwards.

purpleprincess24 · 13/09/2017 21:30

The charges so far from our local council already add up to £175 so I think I'm within my rights to start kicking up a fuss with them. They wouldn't come out until I'd paid over the phone.

I have some raid fly killer, will try that before going to bed .... rather will get DS to do it 🤢

Asbestos in the artex isn't an issue, this part of the house was only built 10 years ago

Rather reluctant to start smashing down the ceiling as it would be a huge job to repair. Just a thought, I just wonder if our house insurance might cover it ?

For those that asked, we own our own home

Thanks for the replies guys make me feel a bit more normal by being freaked out!

If there is anyway you could get powder into the hole you could ring the local vets and ask if they will sell you some negasunt powder, it's actually an antibacterial wound powder but it kills maggots almost immediately, you could certainly sprinkle the ones that are dropping down.

MissEliza · 13/09/2017 21:59

FlowersCakeWineto you Op. We had rats in our loft two years ago. The bloody scratching was bad enough. Where are you? I know a brilliant pest control company. We initially went to Rentokil and they were rubbish and disgustingly expensive. How do they get away with it? If you're near me, I'll send you the number

MrsPringles · 13/09/2017 22:02

Oh bloody hell OP, I take my hat off to you, I would have burnt the house down by now and fled the country.

Good luck getting rid of them Confused

PocketNiffler · 15/09/2017 11:55

How you getting on op?

Nikephorus · 15/09/2017 13:43

I'd be down the estate agents!

CbeebiesAddict · 15/09/2017 13:50

I have no advice for now but would highly recommend a cat or dog to prevent a reoccurrence!

skilledintheartofnothing · 15/09/2017 13:54

for the next few nights if you can not sleep in the room you could remove the lightshade and tape a clear bag around it on the ceiling so that they drop into it and are trapped. Then at least there is no chance of them making their way elsewhere

DeleteOrDecay · 15/09/2017 14:12

Oh gosh sounds horrendous. Reminds me of the time a pigeon/bird/something got into the boarded up chimney breast in our old house and died, first thing we knew about it was when flies started coming out of a tiny gap. We couldn't do anything except fill the gap so they couldn't get in. They did go eventually. I'm just glad we didn't have to see the maggotsEnvy

Your situation sounds much worse though, I think I would have to burn the house down in your shoes.

purpleprincess24 · 16/09/2017 08:56

The house is still standing. ... just !

We've emptied the room and sealed it up for now, the council are coming this morning!

I've worked out that in another ten days the rat should have decomposed so hopefully that will be the end of it. I'm then going to get the room deep cleaned from top to bottom

The cycle of life, eh. Hang in there. Where is DS sleeping?

FleurWeasley · 24/09/2017 18:35

How is it going OP?

sall74 · 24/09/2017 19:16

Hate to be the bearer of (more) bad news but it might not just be the one off incident thst others are suggesting... in a previous house I came back off a weeks holiday one late September to a load of dead blue bottles everywhere, thoroughly cleaned the house top to bottom and thought that was the end of it, but no, had the same again the following Sept and the Sept after that, apparently certain breeds of flies return to their birth place to lay their eggs and you end up with repeat infestations that are almost impossible to eradicate

LakieLady · 24/09/2017 19:28

I generally have a strong constitution for things that are yucky, but maggots creep me out. This has actually made me gag, but on the bright side, it's also made me not want any tea.

Hope you manage to get it sorted, OP.

yumyumpizza · 24/09/2017 19:41

Why not just take a small piece of ceiling down? Would only need to be a small patch and then a plasterer can easily patch it up, lick of paint, done. Pretty small job compared to living with a dead rodent and maggots and flies surely?! I don't get why you're saying it's a big job??

Goodgriefisitginfizzoclock · 24/09/2017 19:44

Spray Raid fly killer it does kill them off they sort of shrivel. Have posted a thread myself few weeks back maggots seemingly from nowhere in our hallway that only had wood floor a door mat and table lamp God know where our maggots came from but sprayed raid, swept up, raid again took about 3 days drove me insane and I've not eaten rice since ( deadly serious- image of wriggly maggot burnt into my retinas)

PopcornBits · 24/09/2017 20:48

Your house sounds like something out of a silent hill game. Sorry no hope. Next you'll have half dead people coming out of your walls. Grin

purpleprincess24 · 25/09/2017 11:57

We are hopefully maggot and rat free !

Council came down, pulled all the light fittings out in the bedroom and managed to clear the maggots and even the rat itself (I trusted him on this one as no way was I having a look in there).

DS has now moved back into his room

Still cost us £172

FleurWeasley · 25/09/2017 14:01

Hoooray!!

AdoraBell · 25/09/2017 21:36

Yay 😁 , Hmm at the cost though, but needs must and all that.

Chris202 · 26/09/2021 09:05

I've just found the same problem! Freaky. We had a rat that was coming into our house somehow. And it was smart too didn't go into humane traps, avoided snap traps, then had to put poison down and its gone. Is it now only coincidental that there's maggots coming out of the spot light fitting and had been dropping onto the bed while I slept.... i hate flies. Maggots not as much but still I took off the light fitting, looked in it got all the maggots out, went into the loft and looked around for any dead rats nearby and couldn't see anything which would have helped....I don't think it was living in the house it was coming in for food somehow. Anyway I could see no more maggots anywhere up there and anywhere from below the fitting. But as time went on they continued to drop out. I think they are in the nooks in the wood and plaster that surrounds the light fitting..... I sprayed fly killer (which I don't think will kill them) to coax more of them out and then I'm killing them all. I found 3 flies in the loft which I killed. 2 were small and one was like a big fly. Hopefully that will stop any more maggots appearing. Freaks me out though. Sort of want to find a dead rat so I can remove it. Doesn't smell anywhere either and it's been gone for weeks. I hope you sorted your issue. At the moment I'm just letting the maggots drop out and killing them one by one. Hopefully we won't get flies, I absolutely hate them they are so annoying. I looked at the other light fittings and couldn't see any sign if them. So I'm guessing the fly that got into the loft had laid eggs on the light fitting because its warm like an incubator. And they've just started coming out the sides and dropping onto us while we sleep. Fun times!
