Wibu to ask my mum to stop my 3 year old watching American tv when she is there? She picks her up from nut earth twice a week when I finish late and now 3 year old has started calling me mom or mommy. Which just really grates! Aibu to ask her to stick to ceebeebies?

*alive, not alone - sheesh

ForagingForFaerieGold · 13/09/2017 17:17

Let's face it. Americans dont talk proper like wot we do.

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 13/09/2017 17:20

Mam is northern

stuckinny · 13/09/2017 17:22

It probably won't last. I used to be mum until DS started school and now I'm definitely mom - we're in the states. In fact he used to say all kinds of English words until he started school.

FerretsAreFeminists · 13/09/2017 17:23

Where does 'Mam' get used as a matter of interest?

The north east and possibly a few other places. I know I've heard a few Irish people use it.

Brittbugs80 · 13/09/2017 17:25

Bollocks is it, mom has been the preferred term in much of the West Midlands long before TV - my Nan used to call her mom 'mom'!

Agreed!

I feel like a twat when I say Mum or Mummy!

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 13/09/2017 17:26

YANBU to drum it out of her but YABU to say gotten. Horrible word.

Curtainsider · 13/09/2017 17:26

You have to move to Wolverhampton.

SuzukiLi · 13/09/2017 17:28

What do you say instead of gotten???

OP posts:
MrsJayy · 13/09/2017 17:28

Mam is used all over isn't it my sister calls my mum MAW when she is drunk

Nuttynoo · 13/09/2017 17:30

They use it in America because they used it in the midlands first.

jamdonut · 13/09/2017 17:30

I had no idea Mom was used anywhere in Britain. My mum used to call her mum 'Mam' , and. she was Welsh., but it is used mostly in the North , in my opinion.

RaininSummer · 13/09/2017 17:31

'gotten ' is an abomination, hate it. I would say ' I have got', 'I've got' or 'I got'.

glasshalfemp · 13/09/2017 17:31

I always correct my children when they say couch garbage etc. Just think American English doesn't sound correctConfused

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 13/09/2017 17:31

I had a confusing conversation with my ds during his Scooby Doo loving period when he kept referring to "Claw zet"
I eventually realised he meant wardrobe (Closet) Grin

I'm sure she'll grow out of her Mom phase. I grew up watching Sesame street and didn't turn American. What is she watching at your mum's? Hopefully not Big Bang Theory or something?

SignoraCarmignola · 13/09/2017 17:33

What do you say instead of gotten???

Ermm. got
As in, "I've got a luvverly bunch of coconuts".

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 13/09/2017 17:33

How do you use 'gotten' op?

'I've gotten the ice cream out for pudding'
'I've got the ice cream out for pudding'
'I've taken the ice cream out for pudding'

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 13/09/2017 17:33

I want to know where nut earth is - I am picturing a leafy world ruled by the Squirrel Overlords. I'm afraid I don't really care about Americanisms, surely it is a good thing, embracing other cultures. Making sure your offspring only watch cbeebies reminds me of Michael Gove trying to ban non-British books from the curriculum.

MrsJayy · 13/09/2017 17:35

These things dont normally bother me however Dd 2 said STORE BOUGHT Pizza i spun around like a demon and growled what did you say Grin

Pinksunset40 · 13/09/2017 17:36

I am from the West Midlands and it's "Mom" here! I always find it strange that my Mom writes Mum in the cards she gives me and I have never called her "Mum" in my life. I think "Mummy" sounds snobby, but I'm from an area where people call each other Bab and babies are called babbies cringe

SuzukiLi · 13/09/2017 17:39

DD calls boobies babbies Grin

What's the big deal? Just correct her when she says "mom"? Forcing her to avoid all american made tv is bizarre, especially as - like others have said - many british people say mom and it's sure to crop up on british tv. Hell, just avoid tv alltogether and make sure she never comes in contact with those british folls uncouth enough to use "mom". Yes. I am being sarcastic.
Just tell her you don't like to be called mom and it's mum and refuse to answer her if she says mom.

SenecaFalls · 13/09/2017 17:45

Next she will be saying 'gotten'.

How do you feel about "forgotten"? Same root.

AllToadsLeadToHome · 13/09/2017 17:46

If you live where I have Mum or Mummy was/is the norm, Mam is something we heard on TV, same as Mom but as I said earlier only on American programmes or films. I never heard it used in any other region.

Meer annoys me - a lot. It's not even spelt (spelled if you are American I think) meer, it is spelt mirror. I first heard this on holiday when the people next to us by the pool were American and there was urgent need to locate a wayward contact lens "Mel, get me a meer" made me look to see what a meer was, it was a disappointment to discover it was a looking glass.

SuzukiLi · 13/09/2017 17:47

I also use forgotten. I honestly don't mind americanisms. It's just mom that I hate because it's being shouted at me all day.
