Excited about Christmas?

Filofanny · 13/09/2017 11:15

I just had a message from a friend asking if i was excited about Christmas. I said no, because its only September, and she replied 'Oh, :( i thought you were a good mum'

Wtf? Is that a sign I'm a bad parent? My children are 16 and nearly 19, so its not as magical as it once was, but we do enjoy Christmas. We just dont spend a third of a year looking forward to it. I feel stupidly pissed off and judged now

AIBU to think its a bit early, not to start preparing, or budgeting or whatever, but to be excited?

PMSL is your friend nuts? Not being excited about Christmas in MID SEPTEMBER does not make you a bad mum!!! WTF?!

I haven't had my main holiday yet (one week to go!) so Christmas is the LAST thing on my mind!

Tell her she's a twat!

hiphopcat · 13/09/2017 11:17

I started getting 'excited' by Mid November BTW, no sooner than that. I mean, I buy a few things in the shopping if I see stuff cheap (Quality street has just gone down to £4, so I may get one of them soon, but that's it, for no anyway!)

Nomoresunshine · 13/09/2017 11:17

Tell her you have name changed by deed poll to Ebenezer following her text. .

hiphopcat · 13/09/2017 11:18

I mean I START getting excited by mid November, (not started!)

glenthebattleostrich · 13/09/2017 11:20

I'm excited for Christmas. I'm crocheting blankets, scarves, mittens and hats. Also sewing bags and stockings and there's home made sloe gin, mini Christmas cakes and chocolates too.

It's basically an excuse to use up my stash so I can buy more wool and fabric.

If she asks again, ask her what homemade stuff she's doing and then tell her your friend glen is a much better mum than she is 😀

DonkeyPunch88 · 13/09/2017 11:25

Nope, your friend is batshit. After bonfire night and all that is done then we get excited in our house. I refuse

DonkeyPunch88 · 13/09/2017 11:25

I refuse to get excited before that!

x2boys · 13/09/2017 11:43

Well we still have Halloween yet and my birthday is mid November I start Xmas preparations after my birthday.

Gottagetmoving · 13/09/2017 11:48

I stopped being excited about Christmas when I was 12.
Once I became a parent it's was just a worry every bloody year although I enjoyed seeing the children's excitement.

user1485342611 · 13/09/2017 12:18

Is she, by any chance, the type who spends silly amounts of money on Santa presents and puts up her decorations in mid November, with pictures all over Facebook of her colour co-ordinated tree and a mountain of parcels beneath it.

I love Christmas. I love it from about mid November on. Before that I find it really irritating when shops etc. try and shove it in my face. Spreading the Christmas season out so thinly across several months just ruins it, in my view,

Rainatnight · 13/09/2017 12:21

She's absolutely ridiculous. Anyone who gets some stuff from the big man under the tree by the deadline is doing fine as a parent!

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 13/09/2017 12:25

Getting all geared up for Christmas before summer is even properly over is a bit weird, but each to their own.
Relating it to being a good mum (or not, as the case may be) is downright bizarre. Did she really say that?
If she did, she must have a mental age of ten.

sirfredfredgeorge · 13/09/2017 12:25

"I can't begin to think about Christmas until we've got Halloween out of the way, then there's all the hassle of thanksgiving, I know it's not really British but the kids just love it so much, as a mum I just have to do it."

IcelandicWarriors · 13/09/2017 12:31

Do you think people get Christmas mixed up with the actual season? My spirts are really high because I love Autumn, the leaves, the chill, boots, stews, hot chocolate, conker and acorn collecting, decorating the house with autumn foliage, Halloween, bonfire night, then preparing for winter and Christmas with the twinkly lights and homely stuff. So I feel excited about September - December.

Then I get excited about Spring and what to plant!

Or is of merely excitement for a day and presents?

PoppyPopcorn · 13/09/2017 12:32

I never get excited about Christmas - I really dislike the whole thing.

But saying someone is a "bad mum" because they're not getting excited abotu something which is THREE MONTHS away is lunacy.

TheNaze73 · 13/09/2017 12:36

She sounds crackers

Endlessswirling1976 · 13/09/2017 12:40

Icelandic your post has made me stupidly over excited!!! Can't wait for all those wonderful things. Loving the weather today too Smile happy days

KungFuPandaWorksOut16 · 13/09/2017 12:42

My local supermarket has started selling mince pies and Christmas cakes.
I got excited when I saw that yesterday.

IcelandicWarriors · 13/09/2017 12:45

Endless, I went for a run in the woods this morning and the weather and light was perfect. The wind, sunny, leaves on the turn.

coconuttella · 13/09/2017 12:46

Do you think people get Christmas mixed up with the actual season? My spirts are really high because I love Autumn....

But Christmas is most definitely in winter!

CrizzleMyShizzle · 13/09/2017 12:47

Oh, :( i thought you were a good mum'

😅😅

Tell her today is the feast day of St Nectarius and if she didn't know that she can't classify herself as a good mum.

IcelandicWarriors · 13/09/2017 12:52

It is only 5 days into winter. I love winter too.

Endlessswirling1976 · 13/09/2017 12:54

Icelandic, sounds wonderful! I've been thinking about getting my running shoes back on recently and have been feeling like it more with this weather, might go for an early evening one, getting very spurred on now!

5foot5 · 13/09/2017 12:58

IcelandicWarriors That's a lovely post! Smile

I have always been a big Christmas fan but I think your friend sounds a bit nuts and her comment about "being a good mum" is downright stupid.

I will admit I have started making the home-made damson gin intended for presents but that is because it takes 3 months.

But I still have a holiday to go on that I am more excited about than Christmas.

Probably round about November for me too. My sisters and I always have a lovely day out in November that is Christmas-themed so that really kicks off the season for me.

rainbowpie · 13/09/2017 13:05

YABU! I'm giddy for autumn/winter in general. Cold weather, soup, gloves, hot chocolate, all of it. Plus all our birthdays are between now and Christmas. I've booked the birthday and Christmas activities and we have a lot to look forward to.

Your friend is BU to imply you are a bad mum though!!
