Lisfranc foot injury/ off feet for at least 6 weeks! How do you cope???

Sorry posting here for traffic.

I fell and got a bad sprain/fracture on Saturday. I've had a couple of people mention they think it's is lisfranc injury due to the huge swelling, pain and bruising on the top and bottom of the foot.

I'm going to see a specialist on Thursday hopefully but my doctor said he thinks that's what it is too.

Has anyone had this? It looks like best case scenario is at least 6 weeks in a cast completely off my feet. (Worst is surgery or months off my feet.) I CANT do this. We have a 4 year old very energetic ds and lots of animals, where we live is rough paths and lots of up and down. Dh can't take time off work. I'm panicking. I'm awful on the crutches they gave me. I've fallen a few times, mostly on to the bad foot which makes it unbearably painful for hours. I can't manage stairs, I'm having to crawl up them.

And if anyone has had any other injury that gets them off their feet, what the HELL do you do?!

We have no family support, no friends that can help as we're very rural and I won't be able to drive. What the fucking fuck do I do with ds? He can't stay in the house all day. Dh is self employed, he can't take time off.

Oh, and I have a screwed up knee on the good leg. I've needed surgery on it for years and twisted it a few weeks ago and now it's bearing all of my hopping weight it's giving up too. SadSadSad

There isn't anyone to pay to help. We live on an island extremely remotely.

Poor you don'tstop it really sucks. The iWalk is much much more stable than crutches. I'm a total klutz on crutches. It doesn't even slip on a wet bathroom floor. We went on holiday and I could manage to have fun in a country house on a hill. It's not the same as normal walking of course: your knee gets tired after a while. And you can't bend your knee. And you get a lot of funny looks! But it's way better than crutches.

I was eventually seen by a Physiotherapist who works with the Orthopaedic Consultant and had knowledge of Lisfranc injuries, she sent me to have weight bearing xray taken after I had told her about the bruising on the sole of my foot she said it was a "no brainer" she looked at the xrays and said the gap between the two bones we're a definite indication of a Lisfranc injury and arranged for me to see the Orthopaedic Consultant, he then booked me in for a CT scan which confirmed the presence of the fractures and ligament damage.

20% ofLisfranc injuries are misdiagnosed due to lack of knowledge. In my case I was taken to a minor injury unit staffed by nurses, no doctors. After being diagnosed properly 2 doctors at our surgery googled Lisfranc injuries, neither of them knew what it was, I don't expect doctors to know everything.

I guess I was just unlucky.

The consultant told me that most Lisfranc injuries are caused by car crashes and are more severe but they are seeing more caused by contact sports. He also said that although mine wasn't exactly severe at the time the delay in getting the correct diagnosis made it much worse because I was obviously walking on it. It was the most painful thing I have ever suffered.

You are doing the right thing by keeping off it.

Grin wish I knew about them when I was on crutches, mind you the Air boot was only just becoming popular. I am 5 years post injury, 2 years since the 2nd operation, I will probably need more surgery due to the fact that arthritis has set in (again because of the delayed diagnosis)

dontstophelping · 14/09/2017 20:21

Oh no you poor thing!

It is lisfranc. They're not sure if it's just ligament or fractured too as they wouldn't X-ray me as I said there's a tiny (and I mean I tiny as we've been trying for over three years) chance of me being pregnant.

I was pretty annoyed. All the other X-ray I have teeth etc and last weeks they just put a radiation coat on you. The doctor seemed annoyed too but the X-ray lady was stomping around pissed off.

I have a sexy air boot and getting knee walker tomorrow.

Let's hope you don't need any surgery. Best of luck with everything! It's probably best if you're not actually pg right now!!

It's the first time in years I haven't been eagerly awaiting the day I can test lol.

Watch me get pregnant this month!

I do feel it should be possible to advertise for a live-in help, despite your remoteness. There must be people who would be willing to up sticks for a while for a bit of cash. It's not like you will need complex medical procedures done – just housework and animal/childcare. Is there any way to advertise in the nearest large town, or on community resources online or something?

Although inevitably it will punish you financially either way...
Poor you. :(
