How long do your Yr2 children spend on homework???

Hi Last year we had no homework from the school apart from reading, this year there has been a massive jump with spellings, reading, and maths which should be done each night? It takes about 20-30mins each eve - it feels a bit of a big leap from a bit of reading each night?
Is this average across primary schools now?

Some schools do the 10 mins per year rule, so
Year 1 = 10 min
Year 2 = 20 min
Year 3 = 30 min

It is a way of creating the habit of daily work .
Try to have a word with the teacher if you feel it is too much.

Our school don't give homework unless absolutely necessary. They teach in what is to most children a second language so ask from year 2 that they spend 5-10 mins 4-5 times a week reading. That's it.

10 mins on spellings Mon-Thurs (test is Friday)
10 mins reading (supposed to be every night but I aim for 4 nights a week)
10 ish mins on maths once a week (usually do at weekend as it is given out/handed in on Weds)

I have twins so have to do it all twice - I think it's too much (especially as they already do before/after school clubs as I work) but that's just my personal opinion :-)

not more than 5-10 mins max. but my older child is severely disabled and I just don't have the time and energy for my younger child. So far we are 1 week into the school year and the daily 5 mins appear to be plenty though Grin

We've not had any yet, but last year (yr 1) we got maths generally 10-15 minutes, (she is good at maths) and English about 1/2 .

Both set on a Friday for submission on Wednesday.

Plus spellings and reading

Year 2 teacher here. I used to ask parents to read with their child every night and talk to them about things they were doing like counting change, weighing ingredients or measuring things (it's surprising how many parents don't!).

I did set homework once a fortnight on a Friday which included spelling words and either a creative writing exercise or a maths task based on class work.

DS2 is 6 and in Y2 and reads to me every night and practises spellings each night. It probably amounts to about 30 minutes. He has maths and english homework on Fridays which take around 45 minutes for both.

He manages it easily and it doesn't interrupt our other activities so we don't mind it. He's a bit of school-lover though, so we're fortunate. DS1 was less inclined to work every evening after school.

DS has just gone into yr2 and they're expected to read for 10 mins every day, either independently or to someone and practise their spellings daily. They've also been given a sheet with 9 different activities/projects on to choose one each week to do as homework to be handed in on the Friday so have a full week to do it.

I wouldn't stress about it too much. I never took homework at that age too seriously!
