To think she should take this money back?

I'm so annoyed. I very often give colleagues a lift to and from work. They all contribute to petrol costs. I often end up with £30 or £40 in notes in the drivers arm rest.
They often pop their money straight in there too, so all works well.
This evening, heading home from work one of the ladies I was giving a lift to asked if she could swap some pound coins she had for some of my notes.
Sure, fine, just don't take all the notes I said.
Dropped her off, got home and thought I'd put the coins into my coin jar. Only to find she swapped 3 x £10 notes for £30 in OLD pound coins.

Now I know I have until mid-October to spend them, but AIBU in thinking it was cheeky and she should take them back?

As PPs said, it was very rude of her and you're not a bloody bank! Why should you have to go to the trouble of changing the coins to save her the job?!

I would have to say something, even if it's only in a joking way.

CardsforKittens · 12/09/2017 20:14

What an odd and inconsiderate thing to do! I wouldn't be annoyed but I would definitely make a joke with her about it, like asking her if she had any old francs or deutschmarks that I might add to my collection of obsolete currency.

justpoppingby · 12/09/2017 20:19

Oh pleeease tell her someone offered you £1.20 per old pound coin 😁

MyBrilliantDisguise · 12/09/2017 20:19

That was really rude of her. I'd definitely bring it up.

BarbaraofSevillle · 12/09/2017 20:19

Maybe she was short of cash so raided a piggy bank? I really don't see a big deal unless you don't think you're going to spend £30 in the next five weeks. Just use them next time you pay for petrol.

Gemini69 · 12/09/2017 20:19

she's taking the piss OP.... out of YOU... because she couldn't be arsed changing these herself...

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/09/2017 20:25

Do you give her lifts? Does she pay her way?

You gave her a lift out of kindness and she abused that kindness.

SunSeptember · 12/09/2017 20:27

Just be really upfront and say you didn't realize can she swop back although surprised you didnt notice this really...lots of coins she was putting back

MrsJamesAspey · 12/09/2017 20:28

Next time she needs a lift just say sorry I'm not going that way cos I need to pay £30 worth of coins into the bank before October 😜

wibblywobblywoo · 12/09/2017 20:32

Oh pleeease tell her someone offered you £1.20 per old pound coin

^^This! Please, please do this - or enlist the help of a colleague to 'casually' mention that old pound coins are becoming collectable and increasing in value now....... Grin

mellicauli · 12/09/2017 20:33

say you'd like notes back please. You had clearly asked not to take so many notes. If she refuses she'll have to make her own way home I guess.

scotchpie · 12/09/2017 20:36

She is a cheeky sod and I'd probably say 'your a corker, leaving me with all the old £1 to get shut off' be blasé about it.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/09/2017 20:40

That's very rude

That's literally her saying 'MY time is more valuable than yours/you're my secretary/I am more important than you' or she would just fucking spend them herself Hmm

foodiefil · 12/09/2017 20:45

Cheeky cow! More front than Blackpool

PinkFlamingo888 · 12/09/2017 20:47

I don't see the problem. You said she could swap the money (I wouldn't have wanted the coins personally) and she did. It's legal tender and you can spend it or change it. Surely that's all you'd have done with it anyway?

Katedotness1963 · 12/09/2017 20:51

Who carries thirty quid in coins? She must have planned this. Definitely cheeky but you can cash them in at the bank, right? Did she give you petrol money or just swap out her coins?

Ellie56 · 12/09/2017 20:53

You said she could swap them. They are still legal tender. You got 30 x £1 coins for £30 of notes.

Pay for petrol with them, chill and save getting worked up for something more important.

MipMipMip · 12/09/2017 20:54

Next time someone asks laugh and say "not doing that again after x gave mne £30 in old one pound coins - had to make a trip to the bank to get them changed!". PA but satisfying.

Sandsunsea · 12/09/2017 20:54

Rude of her. I'd probably give her some bad vibes for a while but wouldn't really say or do anything else about it. She's earned a black mark against her that's for sure

jakscrakers · 12/09/2017 20:59

Least there still legal tender till the 15th October, but that is an appalling thing to do, she obviously knew they were running out of time and couldnt be bothered taking them to the bank or using them, I certainly wouldnt be offering her a lift again in a hurry ..

Therealslimshady1 · 12/09/2017 21:05

What a wanker she is!

honeyroar · 12/09/2017 21:23

Definitely do a detour when you next give her a lift and spend time at a bank swoping them - so she is put out a few minutes even though she thought she'd got rid of them. If there's anyone else in the car say "sorry but some bugger dumped a load of old coins on me and I have to cash them in while I still can.
