To think getting enough exercise is ridiculously hard?

I'm on my way home from work and I'm supposed to be going to a training session this evening at 8pm...first one of the course, the only sport I truly, truly love. Except I'm not going to go because I'm so exhausted I could fall asleep right here and now if I shut my eyes.

I don't even have DC! I just work (45 hours per week plus some evenings) and spend a lot of time with my DH and DF on weekends, which involves quite a bit of travelling around.

Does anyone actually get the required 30 mins 4 times a week?? Please tell me I'm not alone.

Feel like a lazy slob! Sad

Dear god I swear I almost passed out!!!! Thanks for giving me the kick I needed guys! Was great to meet my new class too Grin

I was nervous at first because they're almost all boys so usually so much better at acrobatics but on the flip side they can't flex at all so we're all in the same boat a bit. Smile

MN is definitely a place to get motivation!

No we do not always have time and sometimes we have to sacrifice what we WANT to do, for what NEEDS to be done. I am a single mother if three running a legit (i.e. Not mlm) business and invariably end up ditching exercise plans in place of a) giving my kids some much needed parental time, re-jigging appointments with clients who can't make a prior appointment and so eating into gym time, or feeling so unbelievably exhausted I just can't bring myself to do it. The fight is real OP!

Ditch the uber and get on a bicycle!

Doramaybe · 12/09/2017 22:01

Walk, walk walk. Fast if you can, but just walk.

No special shoes, no need to go anywhere or drive there, just go out your door and walk.

I do it every night. No kids or dogs here, but I just go. Sometimes it is a pain to walk out the door, but once out, with good music/podcast on whatever, I feel great when back indoors.

I pretend I have a dog lol. Minimum 40 minutes.

It does you good. Honestly. But I do give up when it is lashing rain. That's where the mostly unused yoke in the garage comes in. Yes the treadmill. Hate them, but sometimes needs must if it is bad weather outside.

Sometimes when you feel like shit, exercise can recharge your battery, I've dragged myself to classes when it's the last thing on Earth I've felt like doing and its woke me up and I've come out feeling great.

teaandcakeat8 · 12/09/2017 22:15

It is hard but also a commitment and you absolutely have to decide to make the effort.

I run to work a few days a week (about 10 miles - sometimes all the way and sometimes get a bus halfway). It takes longer than driving so I get up at 5am. Gym two lunchtimes. Sacrifice most Saturday evenings getting drunk to train for marathon on Sunday mornings.

It's cold, dark and wet this time of year but I feel so much better for exercising.

Not saying this is for everyone but generally very fit people are probably making a lot of sacrifices or have sheer bloody willpower.

kitkat321 · 12/09/2017 22:22

I agree that getting into a routine is key - I was in a good routine the the road from mine to my gym was closed for 5 weeks and I lost that routine (there was a ridiculously long detour but it really was excessive).

I did do some exercise at home - I have my own weights so can fit in one upper and one lower body circuit but need to get back into it.

As others have said, I never regret a work out. The thought of it is always worse than the reality!

pp2017 · 12/09/2017 22:41

I get up early and go to the gym or for a run before anyone else gets up.....

That way I also don't feel like my exercise routine is "eating into family time" either 😳

MouldyChipPan · 12/09/2017 22:49

Yes I do. 30 minutes each morning (7 days a week) just walking the dog counts as exercise (as long as it triggers fitbit's exercise sensor!).

On top of that I go to gym on a Tuesday night after work, karate on a Wednesday night, Pilates on Thursday night, gym and swimming on a Friday, yoga and swimming on a Saturday and gym and swimming on a Sunday. I work full time and have two teenage kids.

Of course I'm tired and can't be arsed but I force myself to go. You could go too but you're making excuses.

MouldyChipPan · 12/09/2017 22:51

Just read back and realised you went after all. Excellent!

PickAChew · 12/09/2017 22:51

I must admit that it's become harder for me now that I no longer have a hilly school run. I do more steps, but they're all on the flat or downhill!

SpoonfulOfJam · 13/09/2017 08:16

Agree it's about Motivation. I work part time, at home with 2 little kids the other days.

I go to classes 3 times a week, after they go to bed. And a Sunday morning run.

My other evenings I work (teacher, so planning and marking). I actually see my workouts now as my leisure time, so I hate if for any reason I can't get to one.

I feel great, and I look pretty good too!

Mulch · 13/09/2017 08:19

Prefer morning exercises to get it out way. Also people tend to work very stationary jobs Ie at a desk, we think we're tired but it's mental rather than physical

CurlyhairedAssassin · 16/09/2017 09:44

I'm just coming back to the thread. I posted that working full time and being too knackered I just don't feel like exercising after 9pm or getting up extra early to go for a run. Not just "I can't be bothered" type of feeling but a real proper tiredness.

In response to the people who said it's just about motivation and if you WANT to exercise you will, can I just say that I actually found out yesterday that I have low iron after a blood test for something else. Been put on iron tablets for 3 months and am hoping that will make a difference to my energy levels (and stop my hair thinning)

I had thought my extreme tiredness was just middle age and having a full time job (and that yes, maybe I was just being weak-willed and lazy!). Seems there could be an actual medical reason for it so I just thought it was worth suggesting that if anyone else is like me and falls asleep on the sofa each evening after dinner, struggling to do anything else but that after a full day's work, it MIGHT be worth getting your iron levels checked out.

pp2017 · 16/09/2017 22:21

@CurlyhairedAssassin

I have iron deficiency, but the tablets did not agree with my erm, constitution, ahem... lol

Try Spatone - you can buy it in boots (permanently on 3 for 2) it's basically mineral water found in ground with naturally occurring iron - I have one every morning in an OJ and noticed the difference within days 😊
