Painful gum - what to do?

HelloPossums · 11/09/2017 22:46

For the last couple of days, the area on the far left of my bottom teeth has been a bit painful.

It's the bit on the top of my bottom teeth. I think this could be part of the gum, but could be wrong. I'm not sure it could be cut or something? Can't think how though.

I got hold of some Corsodyl medicated mouthwash a couple of days ago and have been using it a couple of times a day since then.

Generally, I think my teeth are (hopefully) fairly healthy. I brush twice a day, floss when I can be bothered and have regular dental check-ups. Had a hygienist appointment last month, and nothing was flagged up, apart from a bit of gum récession on my bottom teeth.

Any tips on how else I can reduce the pain please?

Could u have sensitivity due to receasing gums. I found any of the sensitive reducing toothpastes great.

Could you have something stuck in it? Pork is especially notorious for that. It might get worse and push out a foreign object in time.

Thanks for your reply All. It could be gum sensitivity - I'll keep on using sensitive toothpaste.

As the pain's on the top of the gum rather than the bottom though, and I've never had that before, it's made me wonder if it could be something else.

Possibly, baffled. Oh gosh I hope not Sad

Do you think it could be wisdom tooth pain? (Am 25)

I get this sometimes, I have a tooth that's at a very slight angle and tiny bits of food can get trapped and that irritates my gum and makes it sore, almost painful. Normal floss doesn't get it out and l need to give it a really good clean with a tepe brush, once the offending food is out the soreness usually settles down within a couple of hours.

Sounds like wisdom tooth trying to come through, the gum covering it becomes sore and then becomes traumatised when eating.

Continue with corsodyl mouthwash and have soft diet and eat on the other side. I've experienced this and it resolved after a week.

If it is something stuck (popcorn is a bastard) then it should be over in a couple of days. I've had it with overcooked chicken before and managed to get it out but only once it was the size of a bloody beach ball and terribly sore. Once out about 12 hours later it was fine.

Perhaps you've cut it?

Thanks everyone!

Daft question, but how long roughly should I leave it before looking into having a dental check-up? A couple of days?

There is so much it could be - main culprits are: If you are a heavy brusher - trauma to the gum from brushing. Trapped food between the gum and tooth - usually worse if you have gingivitis which causes gaps between gum and tooth that small food can get trapped in. Infection in gum. Abscess under tooth. Fracture of tooth. And yes wisdom tooth if you have any not yet erupted (even at 25!).

If it is causing you constant pain (or pain which does not resolve with paracetamol/ibuprofen), I would get seen now rather than wait - sod's law dictates you will get excruciating pain at 11pm on Friday night which you have to endure all weekend!!
