AIBU to get us all out of Florida?

We were in Orlando - me, DP, DP's sister plus all 3 children. The news warnings about the hurricane were terrifying, we heard the airports were all about to close, and there were rumours about all the parks all closing too.

So we managed to get one of the last flights home (7 days early) on Friday. DP seemed on board with this at the time, but now that it looks like Orlando is no longer going to take a direct hit, he's a bit grumpy with me. But all the parks have closed, and it seems Orlando is now on lock-down, so god knows what we'd all be doing now if we were still there? Stuck in a hotel rooom praying the hurricane misses us? Probably big power cuts too?

Good God, imagine trying to be all holiday happy and touristy when you're surrounded by people who have had their homes and lives devestated. No thanks. You did the right thing op.

Scoobydoobydont · 10/09/2017 23:48

I live in a rural area. We do without power a few days every year without fail.

I feel sorry for the people out there but fact is it's actually only a CAT 2 storm when it hits Florida. People had loads of chance to get out or take shelter. People in the BVI, Cuba etc weren't anywhere near as fortunate.

And to go to Florida in September and be suprised your holiday gets ruined and to get an insurance payout is insane.

Sorry if that's not poultry. But seriously, Mexico, Bangladesh, Sierra Leone etc over the last few weeks and people who put themselves in obvious risk are upset about their holidays?

JayDot500 · 10/09/2017 23:49

Just look at this Becca wasting precious internet.

Oi Becca, there is always a bigger picture, allow people their spark in the universe.

altiara · 10/09/2017 23:51

I think you did the right thing OP.

thatdearoctopus · 11/09/2017 00:05

It's been reported it's a Cat 4. Dropped from 5 to 3, but then regained strength over the warm sea between Cuba and USA.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 11/09/2017 00:07

FFS, OP is complaining about her grumpy DH, not a ruined holiday.

Chchchchangeabout · 11/09/2017 00:21

There's now a tornado warning near Orlando airport OP so may be a good job you left

manicinsomniac · 11/09/2017 01:44

I think you did the right thing.

Gutting for you but, on the plus side, not only have you got most of your money back but you'll also save 5 days worth of school fines which will probably mean you've got more to spend on the replacement holiday than was in your original budget!

How long did you get out there? Were you able to at least do the parks before you had to go?

Agerbilatemycardigan · 11/09/2017 01:52

You did absolutely the right thing OP. I would've done exactly the same.

SenecaFalls · 11/09/2017 02:10

Thank you for leaving, OP. You are out of harm's way. We love our tourists here in Florida (I have actually evacuated to relatives in Georgia), but the fewer people first responders have to deal with the better in these extreme weather events. And even in places that are not hard hit, tornadoes are a constant threat.

faithinthesound · 11/09/2017 03:54

What would he have said if you'd opted to stay and Irma had knocked on Florida's door?

Tell him, better that you left and didn't need to, than needed to leave and were unable to. Better you should be down one holiday but up all your lives.

HitsAndMrs · 11/09/2017 04:09

Currently in Orlando. The hurricane is going on right now. Strong winds and rain, loud noise but it's supposed to die down soon. We were in the Disney parks up until Saturday night.
We couldn't leave as the airport has closed so we are stuck here until we can get a flight home.

safariboot · 11/09/2017 04:31

YWNBU. Back on Friday the forecasts were putting a strong direct hit on Orlando as a possibility. In the event Irma went further west, but the forecast is still 100 mile-an-hour winds in Orlando, possibly stronger if Irma veers back east. (The storm category considers peak wind speed only - it says nothing about what the winds are like at a distance from the eye, how much rain there is, the chance of tornadoes, and so on.)

Brittbugs80 · 11/09/2017 07:26

I know it's a serious issue, but is anyone else amused by the thought of Fort Laundryman

Blush stupid phone

MascaraGirl · 11/09/2017 09:30

It sounds like Orlando is currently taking a battering, and the conditions being reported are NOT conducive to a holiday (IMO) so today I feel a little less like we jumped too soon

Lots of debris, downed trees and power outages so definitely don't feel bad about your decision!

ilovegin112 · 11/09/2017 10:29

I'm sure I've just read that they think mco will reopen either tonight / tomorrow

Fecho · 11/09/2017 10:29

I have friends on holiday in Orlando. They have been in the hotel room since yesterday and have to stay inside until Tuesday at least.

MascaraGirl · 11/09/2017 10:56

On this morning's BBC news, a UK tourist was interviewed, she was sheltering in her garage in Orlando and wished she'd got out when she had chance - it looks pretty grim out there right now

Better safe than sorry. If I was there for Disney, I would fly to the other Disney in CA. But that's is assuming I have money

PNGirl · 11/09/2017 11:08

I was on holiday in New York for Irene (we stayed) and Sandy (got the last flight out). Both turned out to be the right decision. You just have to make a call.

MrsJayy · 11/09/2017 11:09

What would you have done if you had stayed sat in the villa waiting you couldn t have gone out just in case the state seems to be in lockdown places shut you did the right thing your husband is being a grumpy git

blueberrypie0112 · 11/09/2017 11:11

I hope everyone is alright. Everyone's safety comes first. They lost their homes, and everything that took years to build up.

GabsAlot · 11/09/2017 11:23

it was a decision u ha to make an seeing as theyre paying out it seems like the right one

maybe you would have been ok maybe not but your safe now

Isetan · 11/09/2017 11:36

Get a grip, as disappointed as you and your H are, it's a bloody category 4 hurricane with José not far behind. Anybody daring to take the hump with me for taking a grown up decision would be told to get lost. I can not abide people who let others make decisions but somehow reserve the right to complain.

For the last time, IT'S A BLODDY CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE!
