I don't live in Florida, is there so little UK news to report that we have to obsess over the weather in another country?
Also, why so much coverage of this particular storm when so many more horrendous natural disasters go un reported all over the world?
Is this that news worthy or has the media lost perspective entirely?

I agree; it's all over the news just now; and whilst it is awful for anyone directly impacted, there seems to be too much coverage in U.K. Media just now

NotACleverName · 10/09/2017 19:53

Considering that it's one of the biggest storms ever recorded, yes it absolutely is newsworthy.

Pastacube · 10/09/2017 19:54

they said it was the size of France, i think that's incredible!

Alpacaandgo · 10/09/2017 19:56

Biggest storm recorded. 6 million people evacuated. That's pretty newsworthy

LoniceraJaponica · 10/09/2017 19:58

Because it is massive news Hmm

YABU

leccybill · 10/09/2017 19:59

It's hardly just 'weather' though, is it? People are dying, whole communities are being flattened. Have a heart.

Oly5 · 10/09/2017 19:59

Huge storm causing mass devastation. I'm not only interested in UK news, I care about global news and politics. I think the coverage is great

ItsAllAboutThePace · 10/09/2017 20:00

course its newsworthy!!

jeez.....are you for real?

FeralBeryl · 10/09/2017 20:00

Bloody hell really?
This storm has wiped out countries. It's aftermath will see more death and devastation and it's one of the biggest ever recorded.
I think it's justifiably everywhere sadly.

DoryDingDong · 10/09/2017 20:01

But people have died en mass via huge earthquakes, land slides etc etc without a fraction of this media interest.

ItsAllAboutThePace · 10/09/2017 20:02

i suppose op is the type of person who needs 'celebrity news' and simple stories in the daily news

DoryDingDong · 10/09/2017 20:02

I mean I'm not saying it's not awful.

LittleLionMansMummy · 10/09/2017 20:03

I think this has also sparked a lot of discussion about global warming and climate change, together with America's current approach to it. All of this is newsworthy because it affects us all to a greater or lesser extent.

ShatnersBassoon · 10/09/2017 20:03

It's a mega-storm ripping its way through several countries. It's kind of a big deal.

Civilsoot · 10/09/2017 20:04

I'm bothered that the media reporting is very U.S focused when Cuba and lots of the Caribbean Islands have been incredibly harder hit and presumably will take a lot longer to recover from than the U.S

Copperbeech33 · 10/09/2017 20:04

One of our closest allies, (whether we like their leader or not) struck by one of the biggest storms ever recorded, evacuating over 7 million people, news doesn't get much bigger.

There is huge crossovers too, more than anywhere else, probably. I have a sibling nearby, my best friend also does, and many others have friends and family in the USA. I don't know, I'm only guessing, but surely the most British connections compared to any other country beyond Ireland, except maybe France

DoryDingDong · 10/09/2017 20:04

I absolutely do not have any interest in celebrity news.
I am also half American
I am interested in world news, not just news affecting the western developed world.

reallybadidea · 10/09/2017 20:05

Yeah, but these are mostly white people so obviously more interesting/newsworthy.

ItsAllAboutThePace · 10/09/2017 20:05

its the poor island communities where people have died!!

TotallyConkers · 10/09/2017 20:05

I would be amazed if it wasn't everywhere. OP this storm is massive and is affecting millions of people and causing deaths and major damage. What exactly do you view as news worthy?

Copperbeech33 · 10/09/2017 20:05

And some of the areas hit are actually British, British citizens.

Hulababy · 10/09/2017 20:06

Its a fairly unprecedented size of hurricane.

Its affected some lands which are British, and it is affected places where a lot of British people emigrate too, have holiday homes or holiday there.

It has many links to the topics of climate change which affects us all.

Other major weather incidents and catastrophic events inc earthquakes hit our breaking news too, even when not in the UK.

You can, of course, set your news apps to UK only events if you wish to avoid it.

hippyhippyshake · 10/09/2017 20:07

Mainly white people? I thought it hit the Caribbean?

DoryDingDong · 10/09/2017 20:07

Exactly Civilsoot
I am half American but it seems the coverage from uk media is making a way bigger deal about Florida than the islands just flattened, why? Because we like Disneyland?

OP posts:
KenAdams · 10/09/2017 20:07

Because it's the biggest ever hurricanes. Entire countries have been flattened millions homeless when they haven't even recovered from the last major hurricane yet. SO sorry that all that has prevented you from hearing all about Wayne Rooneys love life.
