To be pissed off with my mother for ironing so much?

We live together. She is a martyr to the iron. She is ironing right now my OHs shirts, She says I shouldn't send him to work in an unironed shirt.

My DM loves ironing, she says it is soothing for her. So she irons a lot. I never iron anything at all, life's too short. To each their own.

My mum never ironed, neither did MIL.
Both mine and DH's dad were WW2 vets and so used to doing their own so they ironed for the entire family.
As for me,I tried it twice but hated it so DH followed in his father's footsteps.
We've lived in this house for over 30 years and I have no idea where the iron is kept Blush

I'm enjoying the thought of DW "sending me to work" Grin

If I want an ironed shirt to go to work in I iron it myself. That's why my mum taught me to iron.

Bambamber · 10/09/2017 17:22

Cant remember the last time I actually ironed something. In fact I don't think I even own an iron

RubyGoat · 10/09/2017 17:27

Andrewofgg - exactly my point. Of the OP's DM wants to iron their clothes, fine. But to imply that the OP is somehow failing because the OP is "sending him to work in an unironed shirt" isn't on. The OP's OH could presumably iron them himself if he felt it was important. If he CBA, it's obviously not that important to iron them.

FWIW, I don't iron. Not my stuff, not my DH's, not DD's school stuff. I hang things up very carefully & put them away neatly. We are still alive!

Nanny0gg · 10/09/2017 17:30

I think towels used to be ironed from a killing germs PoV rather than a looking good PoV.

I don't understand how, unless you're wearing 100% polyester or dry-cleaned items, your clothes aren't creased if you don't iron. I also prefer the feel and look of ironed bedding.

But my DH was as capable of ironing as me and my children were doing their own from the age of 13.

CaretakerToNuns · 10/09/2017 17:32

Why can't your husband do his own ironing?

EyesUnderARock · 10/09/2017 17:44

I think part of the problem is that however old you are, it's difficult to establish an adult relationship with your mum as easily as you would a friend the same age as your mum. Too much emotional baggage.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 10/09/2017 17:52

Orion. You're a shameless Huesqi.

My Mum basically said my ex wouldn't have 'looked elsewhere' if I'd done his ironing & looked after him properly Hmm. Kind of failing to miss the point that the woman he was fucking was throwing her knickers at him, not well ironed shirts [And as she was a friend we all know her house was a tip & she wouldn't recognise an iron if it burnt her on the ass].

How long is this living together arrangement going to go on for? I can start preparing the veggie patch if you like...

Namesarehard · 10/09/2017 18:04

My mother irons tea towels and socks too. Fuck that. I iron clothes if and when needed. I have better things to fill my time with, such as watching paint dry.

JonSnowsWife · 10/09/2017 18:13

Apparently. The lazy hack with this one is if you tumble dry stuff it comes out less creased.

Alas I don't have a tumble dryer so have to do it myself but you can thank my Dad for the tip.

ScipioAfricanus · 10/09/2017 18:21

My mum loves ironing (including underwear and pants). I don't iron except for really formal occasions and my husband does his own shirts. My dad spent his whole life expecting an ironed shirt to magically appear 5 x a day. I consider it progress and important for my son to learn to do it himself.

ScipioAfricanus · 10/09/2017 18:23

5 x a week! But he was so grumpy with me when I hadn't ironed enough when my mum was away (and I therefore had to iron, clean etc) that it felt like more.

SpottedGingham · 10/09/2017 18:26

I moved house nearly 2 years ago and put the iron in the utility room. It hasn't moved yet. My nan would have tapped the back of my leg and told me I was a slattern. Blush

BakedBeans47 · 10/09/2017 18:35

My mum's forever fucking ironing. Towels, pant gussets, the lot. I don't know how she can be arsed. She thinks it's "terrible" that I don't do my OH's. Why would I when I don't do my own!

EyesUnderARock · 10/09/2017 18:41

My mother hated ironing, so she is envious that my OH irons. Dad used to iron if he needed something really smart.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 10/09/2017 18:44

I set aside about 1 hour a week to iron the stuff that really needs it. I do iron work shirts and some of my tops and one particular pair of jeans that feel like wearing cardboard if I don't.
All my skinny jeans are fine unironed as once they've been on for two minutes they've smoothed out. I'm sure several of my tops wouldn't need an iron if I remembered to hang them up as soon as I got them out of the washing machine.
I don't iron any of my children's clothes. Not even school uniform. Two minutes after they're dressed they're rolling on the floor or something equally as silly and they get scruffy, ironed or not!
My mum thinks I'm very lazy. I have better things to do with my time, like…
Well, just about anything really!
