To ask how much your toddlers eat?

Neverwasapancakegi7l · 09/09/2017 16:26

My dd (20 months) seems to exist on air.
I've read that they are meant to eat around 130g carbohydrate a day. We are nowhere near that!
She's not underweight or anything but I find most days she barely eats breakfast, she might have some lunch and then she has a reasonable tea. She's just not that fussed.

Is this normal?!

Today she had a cup of tea and a few strawberries at breakfast, 7oz of milk at naptime and then at lunch she had one square of cheese sandwich and half a banana, mid afternoon she had a small chocolate bar and a handful of vegetable sticks and for dinner she is having stuffed peppers and vegetables with some cherries and blueberries after. She will probably eat most of this. Then another 7oz milk before bed.
It barely seems anything.
Other people's toddlers seem to eat and eat. If I bought those ready made toddler meal things my daughter would probably only eat half at most. Obviously she isn't starving or anything but it worries me a bit when basically she goes all day on a quarter of a cheese sandwich!

Love a stealth boast just kidding I'm sure most parents would love it if their toddlers ate like that. Sounds fine to me at this stage but my baby is only 5 months!

silverbell64 · 09/09/2017 16:34

Toddlers are like chipmunks they store food. Think about her intake over a week rather than a day. She obviously eats enough. As a nation we tend to overfeed our kids.

EB123 · 09/09/2017 16:38

They are all different. Some eat like horses and some eat tiny amounts, if she is growing and happy I wouldn't worry too much.

My boys have always been good eaters.
My 17 month old today has had a bowl of cereal for breakfast with a cup of milk, lunch was a sandwich thin with some chicken breast inside, some grapes and blueberries, cucumbers, a couple of chopped cherry tomatoes a few wotsit type crisps, a little yogurt pot and a cup of milk and then dinner is going to be pasta (which he loves) with a couple of meatballs, some peas and grated cheese plus a biscuit and another cup of milk.

16 month old.

Breakfast
half an ikea bowl of cornflakes, most of a yoghurt and 8 grapes. A cup of milk but she will typically only have about 2oz.

Snake -organix goodies bars things and box of raisins.

Lunch - ikea toddler bowl of pasta in tomato pepper sauce with cheese and pine nuts. Picked out the pasta and cheese. Creme caramel.

Afternoon snack - 1/2 packet of Pom bears.

Dinner- kedegree. She will probably eat the fish and egg. Have a yoghurt and fruit afterwards.

Supper - dry cereal and a cup of milk. Some times she will have lots and other days none of this.

purplemunkey · 09/09/2017 16:51

A cup of tea?

My nearly 3yr old:
Breakfast - bowl of cereal
Lunch - half an apple, a few cubes of cheese, carrot sticks, small sausage roll, chocolate rice cake
Dinner - pasta with tomato sauce and likely a yoghurt or biscuit afterwards.

She didn't really do lunch for a long time, just nibbled on a few bits.

isthistoonosy · 09/09/2017 16:52

2.5 yr old
100ml full fat milk
1 slice of toast with lots of butter
Large pear and small carrot
Fahita bread and large hot dog
Bag of wotsit type crisps
Half a slice of bread and butter and a bit of salad, about 1 dessert spoon of pasta
Hand ful of raisins

Probably a bit less than her average day as she skipped breakfast porridge and didn't like the meat at dinner.
She is 15kgs though so hardly wasting away Grin

DisneyMillie · 09/09/2017 16:53

16 month old today-

Milk and Small bowl of 10mth plus muesli porridge

Snack - a small pear and a rich tea finger

Lunch - two squares of tuna sandwich, cucumber and a few grapes

No afternoon snack

Dinner - fish pie made with sweet potato and peas

Milk before bed

welshweasel · 09/09/2017 16:59

19 month old.

Cup of milk on waking.
Breakfast - 1 and a half weetabix, couple of chunks apple, half a slice of toast and marmite

Snack - raisins

Lunch - half a salmon fillet, mash, veg. Pot of custard.

Tea - the filling from a slice of quiche, a mini falafel, some cheese, refused broccoli. Greek yogurt for pudding. Will have cup of milk before bed.

Pretty standard day for us. We do better with food earlier in the day. He's not great with finger food, prefers things he can shovel in with a spoon.

Every few weeks he'll go though a stage of eating virtually nothing, usually when teething. Have given up worrying now.

mygorgeousmilo · 09/09/2017 17:01

I can't move past the cup of tea.... do you mean literally a cup of tea or does it mean something else in another area? Why would a 20mo have a cup of tea?

RainyDayBear · 09/09/2017 17:03

19 month old here. She's had:

Breakfast - 1.5 weetabix with whole milk

Lunch - Philadelphia sandwich, yogurt, banana

Afternoon snack - Organix bar

Dinner - Probably pasta, a veggie sausage and some broccoli and cauliflour, with a kiwi for pudding

Bedtime - Around 4oz milk.

She has large meals but generally doesn't have many snacks. Occasionally we'll have a few blueberries or something, but she generally seems fine with three square meals and an afternoon snack!

HeyMicky · 09/09/2017 17:04

DD2, 2 and a bit:

Bowl of mixed cheerios and weetabix, full fat milk
Greek yogurt and honey

Half a satsuma and sandwich of 1 slice of bread with peanut butter, no crusts

1 mini tortilla folded in half and toasted with avocado, hummus, sweetcorn, ham, cheese
Grapes

Chocolate bourbon

Dinner is pasta with creamy butternut squash sauce and peas

DD1 was the same at her age but eats the same amount now, so it evens out as they age

mirime · 09/09/2017 17:04

DS would switch between eating very little to eating loads.

He always tended to have a good breakfast - he could eat a huge amount of porridge with mashed banana - so as he wasn't losing weight I didn't worry much.

RainyDayBear · 09/09/2017 17:05

Also intrigued by the tea! I've considered letting DD have a small decaf tea as she is so interested in my cup of tea! But haven't tried it yet.

Neverwasapancakegi7l · 09/09/2017 17:07

She likes it! It's mainly milk to be honest and not a full mug.

OP posts:
purplemunkey · 09/09/2017 17:08

The milk is described in oz, at 20m I would have thought you're past measuring milk intake and just give a cup whenever they want one.

Perhaps she's having too much milk still? Or are you worried she not had enough to eat so give her more milk?

Raisinsaretoddlercrack · 09/09/2017 17:09

Mine are older that yours now but were the same at that age as well as being very active and napping very little or not at all. I felt like I was constantly encouraging them to eat more and they hovered around the 25th centile but it felt like a lot of work to keep them there. All my friends children would eat and eat but mine would turn down treats.

They also favoured raw veg and fruit over anything carby. We used to joke they were in an Atkins diet! I think with mine they got bored eating and would just eat enough to take the edge off their hunger and then wanted to be off playing again.

As they have got older and their concentration has improved they have started to enjoy their food more and will sit for longer without being nagged.

I used to try to give them more substantial snacks such as mini quorn sausages, a small chunk of cheese etc to increase their overall calorie consumption. Little and often worked with my DCs.

Daffodils07 · 09/09/2017 17:13

My 2 year old will eat everything and anything and will eat until I literally give him no more (obviously I dont let him).
My 1 year old will eat very little, she is just not intrested in food and I dont make it a big deal.
I offer her food and if she eats great if she doesnt then I just take it away and dont mention it.

Changerofname987654321 · 09/09/2017 17:18

My DD (16 months) has had a couple of cups of decaf tea in her little expresso cup. It is not something that I would allow very often. Maybe once a month.

silverbell64 · 09/09/2017 17:23

Growing up I used to drink weak tea with lots of milk. DS's granny used to give him a little cup of black tea with a squeeze of lemon. We're both perfectly fine.

PinkHeart5913 · 09/09/2017 17:26

DS (2 years old) today has had

1 pancake with Nutella at breakfast and some milk to drink ( 1/4 of pint)
1 small Banana
Lunch was pasta pesto ( adult palm size portion he ate it all) & salad bits ( think he had some peppers & tomatoes)

1/2 an orange
Dinner will be a small slice of asparagus quiche, 4 sweet potato wedges & broccoli
Milk before bed (1/4 of a pint again)

DD is 13 months

Breakfast 1 slice of toast with peanut butter, water ( she won't drink milk)
2 chunks of pineapple
Lunch pasta pesto ( she was given a adult palm size portion but ate not even 1/2) had a couple of pepper & cucumber sticks
A rice cake
Dinner she'll have small slice of quiche, 2 wedges and cauliflower. ( I doubt she will clear the plate)
Milk will be offered before bed ( most times she refuses)

JudgeRulesNutterButter · 09/09/2017 17:30

She's not underweight or anything

-> that's where you stop worrying then Wink

Easier said than done though. But they are all different. Not underweight, not overweight, eating enough of a range of nutrients = job done, in my book.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/09/2017 17:32

My ds is 23 months and eats virtually nothing at meal times. Today he's had porridge, about a quarter of a fish finger sandwich and a piece of cucumber and a cherry tomato, and a yoghurt. Tea is mince/bolognese and pasta, and corn on the cob. We are really trying to cut out snacks as he graze all day so I tend to make a cheese sandwich cut into little pieces and when he asks for food he has that instead of fruit/biscuit/ breadsticks etc and at least then it's got some calories. He's not under or overweight so it doesn't concern me, although I wish he would eat better so he would sleep better (hopefully!)

Of each of these things I serve him a small portion (about half what I give 5yo ds) and he will eat probably half of that. He'll have 7oz milk at bedtime, and possibly 7oz in the night.

ProseccoMamam · 09/09/2017 18:00

DS2 is a year old

Breakfast - cereal (2 shredded wheat) with milk and then a cup of milk too.

Snack - 2 slices of toast with butter and some fruit

Dinner - (depending on what we have in) sandwich/omelette/pasta with a salad and again a piece of fruit & cup of water

Tea - (again depends what we have in) some kind of meat, potato and mixed veggies, with fruit, a cup of water

Snack (usually if we are out or he's been playing lots & needs energy) a granola bar/dried fruit bag

2 bottles of milk before bed

ProseccoMamam · 09/09/2017 18:06

I should probably add, his portion size is the size I would eat. He isn't overweight, just very energetic and bouncy Grin like a Duracell bunny

Bellaposy · 09/09/2017 18:11

I would cut out the 7oz of milk in the middle of the day. DD is 15 months and has milk in the morning with breakfast and 8oz before bed. Might be filling up on milk.
