Right, want to wash my duvet, standard 6kg washing machine.

Duvet is 10.5 tog, down filled. Measures 230 x 220cm and weighs 710g per m2.

AIBU to think it will be fine?

Can you get it in?

ShatnersBassoon · 09/09/2017 12:43

I'd be amazed if there was enough space in the drum to wash it effectively, but you're right in thinking that it's unlikely to break the machine.

Might not break your washing machine. May fuck your duvet up though as it will not be able to jumble around properly and may clump. If nothing else it will not clean properly. So a waste of time.

It cost £15-20 at a drycleaners (though you'll have to wait a few days. Otherwise get yourself to your local launderette with a few coins and 20ps for the tumble drier and take a book.

Hmm... That's kingsize. I just about managed to get a superking in my 9kg machine. I wouldn't do it again...

handslikecowstits · 09/09/2017 12:53

I can't get a duvet that size in my machine and if I overload it with anything else, it grinds round really slowly. I suspect yours will be the same and I doubt it'll spin.

I always take mine to the laundrette.

puckingfixies · 09/09/2017 13:02

Thanks all for replies, I don't usually buy down duvets. I buy a cheap duvet at the beginning of the year and the old one goes to a pet rescue centre. This one was a gift, and I suspect rather expensive.

I think I'd better get it properly cleaned, gift giver might be cross if I destroy the duvet and DH would be cross if I broke the machine (again!).

Years ago I actually weighed some washing to see what weight I was putting in. What I thought was a full load weighed less than the capacity of the machine, so at least I know I'm not overloading the machine, but it seemed really full so I don't really think I should put more in.

Quilts will have a higher volume than the same weight of something like jeans or towels so you quilt might not fit in anyway. Our king size quilt does fit in our 6 kg machine (just) but it is only 4.5 tog. And synthetic not down. Does the label say how to clean it? I would assume that it is not machine washable but may be wrong.

PurplePillowCase · 09/09/2017 13:24

my 12 tog single duvet fits my 8kg washer - just.
so I think you might struggle.
laundrettes have larger mashines + their dryers use a different gas so dry stuff quicker too.

RoganJosh · 09/09/2017 13:27

If you wash it in your bath , you would be astonished at how heavy it gets. I wouldn't put it in your machine.

Runningpear · 09/09/2017 13:27

I washed a down filled coat, very gently and dried outside. It completely ruined it, never been the same since.

HopefullyAnonymous · 09/09/2017 13:28

Don't wash a down duvet in the washing machine! Almost impossible to get it properly dry again and they then start to smell.

Crowdie · 09/09/2017 13:31

I'm not sure whether it will break your machine but I love the idea of giving old duvets to pet rescue centres!

Thanks for that idea OP Smile

donajimena · 09/09/2017 13:40

I love going to the laundrette on occasion. You don't need to have it cleaned just get a large machine and DIY. I'm actually in my local launderette now washing my manky cleaning cloths.

Oysterbabe · 09/09/2017 13:43

I've never washed my duvet BlushShock

Crowdie · 09/09/2017 13:56

There was a research type article a year or two ago (don't ask me where I read it) that said we should all be changing our duvets every year(?) due to build up of micro organisms inside them.

Must admit we have done just that since reading that!

topcat2014 · 09/09/2017 14:21

@Oyster - another non duvet washing household here skanks

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/09/2017 14:36

I thought you didn't wash down. One of the reasons I got wool.

Subtlecheese · 09/09/2017 15:29

I bought my duvet because it fits my machine. Cost wise it makes more sense. It's not likely to break the machine though. If it's to bug it wont get washed properly.
I wash ours once a month. That sounds horrible I know. But I am quite the slattern.

Topseyt · 09/09/2017 16:04

Washing a duvet once a month!! Ours are done once a year.

Covers and sheets are changed every fortnight, occasionally every week if it has been really hot weather.
