AIBU to not want to be smacked on the shoulder or in the face by other passengers bags on the train?

Currently on the train to London & in an aisle seat. Unfortunately in the carriage next to the shop so a fairly constant stream of people going past. I've been repeatedly smacked on the shoulder by people who haven't had the consideration to take bags off their shoulders/backs. AIBU to want to enjoy my journey in comfort and without being hit every time someone with a bag walks past???

I've never had this happen and I get the Virgin East line northbound quite often. Are you "hanging over" somehow?

Maybe it's a really poorly designed train? Other passengers should be able to walk up and down freely without it impinging on seated passengers.

OldPony · 09/09/2017 11:51

'Hanging over'!!! Hahaha!

I get hit all the time and I promise I don't hang over. Are you a wearer of an offending rucksack.

Crowdie · 09/09/2017 11:53

I've had this on flights - people shuffling past trying to find their seat and whacking me on the head with their huge rucksack 😡

I've also had many encounters with inconsiderate umbrella users.

I think everyone who wants an umbrella should have one of those bell shaped ones like the queen uses.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 09/09/2017 11:55

VV annoying. I am suprised by the amount of people who seem unaware when things that are theirs (but not bodily parts) bash into people...like an extension of not being aware of the space their body occupies...

happypoobum · 09/09/2017 11:59

No rucksack here Grin

I am wondering if it's the line IYSWIM? I use the Virgin East Coast a lot and not been aware of this as an issue either whilst sitting in aisle seats or whilst walking to and from loos etc. Never seen it or experienced it or heard anyone shout "Ow! Get the fuck off me with that bloody rucksack you twat!"

Violetparis · 09/09/2017 12:01

I get enraged by people carrying their unopened umbrellas horizontaly so they stab anyone who happens to be behind them. It's usually men carrying huge umbrellas with a massive point bit on the end who seem to be unaware and swing them as they walk Angry

happy I'm on Virgin West Coast! I didn't think I was "hanging over" - starting to doubt myself now Blush. However can see a few people whose shoulders are wider than the seats so Confused

On a side note, someone across the aisle has just hefted backpack onto her back & then turned round in the aisle nearly smacking me in the face with it! Shock

Backpack wearers seem completely oblivious to the fact that they're constantly whacking people every time they turn round

happypoobum · 09/09/2017 12:07

Hmmmm. Different trains then? Unless you are on a train with lots of overweight people it does seem odd there are many whose shoulders are wider than the seat width and clearly that would cause a problem.

I am a size 14 so I would possibly hang over Blush

This happened to my DD (1 and a half ) when she was sat on my lap on the bus. Three times this woman nearly hit her with her bag, eventually hitting her in the face, showing off to her friends flinging herself around the bus whenever it moved.
I said something in the end and funnily enough she managed to stand up and hold on with no problems then.

Spongebob YY encountered this a lot when out shopping too - people who don't seem to realise they take up more room with their bags! Angry

I'm sorry to say that was me... I was on a train recently for the first time in years, with a back pack, and I turned slightly and bumped a seated woman in the head. I'd forgotten how narrow the aisle is. I did apologise profusely and was more careful with my bag after that. But I also somehow spilled water over the man in the seat in front. Again, profuse apologies, but I should probably stay away from humans trains.

EyesUnderARock · 09/09/2017 12:15

DD on the train home yesterday ended up with a random toddler in her lap!
Chaotic muddle of mothers and assorted small children, and he obviously decided that the barging and shrieks of overanxious adults settling onto a crowded commuter train were too much to handle. He helped himself to the nearest comfortable seat. DD. Who just let him stay there until someone noticed as she wasn't sure what to do and he was neither smelly or sticky.

happypoobum · 09/09/2017 12:15

Whilst we're confessing, I did run someone over with my trolley bag at Victoria last month...................

Ewanwhosearmy · 09/09/2017 12:17

When I am ruler of the free world I will ban adults from wearing backpacks. We've just spent a week in a theme park and I am sick of being bashed by tall people spinning around with stupidly large backpacks on.

MinesaBottle · 09/09/2017 21:21

London Underground have started asking people to remove large rucksacks as part of their regular announcements at some stations. Not that this makes a lot of difference as half the fuckers are also wearing headphones.

As I'm short, I've often been bumped by backpacks - some twat once knocked my glasses off and gave ME a dirty look!!

justtiredofcoping · 09/09/2017 21:23

Personally I would ban all short people from
carrying umbrellas - sick of nearly losing my eyes - your above head is my face level
carrying bags at all - because when it hits me in the back of knees for 30 mins on the tube, it gets really tiring and painful

Would ban all really tall men from holding on to the rail - believe me sniffing your arm pit odour is not pleasant

Not got an issue with backpacks

But most of all I would ban those effing platform attendants basically telling me to move down the carriage, take my back pack off, not fart, breathe slowly, wear deodorant, put my brolly away, let small people sit down, not lean on the door and most of all abnt hem from reading the sodding platform indicator out and getting paid £35K for doing it!!!!!
