To wear men's perfume

Yourownworstenemy · 09/09/2017 10:53

I never actually know what to call men's perfume! Is it aftershave? 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, my first boyfriend used to wear Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male, you know the blue torso one, and I LOVE It! I recognise it instantly and want to marry anyone who wears It!

I went to buy some perfume the other day and saw it so decided to spray myself with it just for a bit of nostalgia, and It occurred to me, why don't I just wear It?! 🤷‍♀️ I have a few perfumes that I like but I do tend to wear more manly fragrances

So is it a bit weird if I buy it and wear It? It's quite a common smell I think so will people recognise it as male and think it's weird?!

I know I don't need anyone permission to do anything but I'm just curious what people's thoughts are!

DH has some aftershaves that I use sometimes. If you like it, why not.

Trills · 09/09/2017 10:57

Go for it.

One of my perfumes is a more masculine scent (not labelled as such because it's from a small place that doesn't put that kind of label, but you'd definitely assume it was "for men").

EBearhug · 09/09/2017 10:58

If it smells good on you and you like it, wear it.

I wouldn't recognise it, but even if I did, I know other women who've worn "male" scents. If it works for you and your skin chemistry, who cares?

YANBU. My sister wears men's fragrances as she prefers how they smell on her.

BattleaxeGalactica · 09/09/2017 11:00

It's fine.

I used dh's 'mens' deodorant on a recent break and my pits haven't fallen off yet Grin

VestalVirgin · 09/09/2017 11:29

Wear what you want.

I don't understand perfume as a means of increasing attractiveness, anyway. There's nothing that could smell more like an adult human female than an actual adult human female, and presumably, men haven't evolved to be sexually attracted to flowers so ...

Other way round, too. Perfume makes sense only as something to wear because you like the smell of flowers, wood, or whatever, and for that purpose, how "masculine" it is considered by the general public doesn't matter.

Yourownworstenemy · 09/09/2017 12:27

@Vestal I agree to a degree but I can honestly say when I smell that scent on a man it 100% increases their attractiveness! It happened to me recently a man I've worked with for years and never looked twice at wore it one day and I definitely found him attractive! 🤷‍♀️

I think the smell of perfume for attractiveness is probably a different part of our brain to the one that is attracted to feramones or whatever they are, that's an unconscious thing where as the smell of someone's perfume is very much conscious I think!

Well I've bought some! I'll have a weeks trial and see how it goes Smile

I wear some Tom Ford scents that are supposed to be for men. I love men's scents though and am drawn to those more than floral or feminine ones most of the time.

CoughLaughFart · 09/09/2017 12:38

It's only a men's scent because a marketing department decided it was. Like those deodorants 'specially formulated for men' - i.e. the same as the standard version, but in a black or silver can.

PollyFlint · 09/09/2017 12:40

It's absolutely fine - wear whatever you like and whatever you feel suits you. Some women's perfumes work really well on men as well - Guerlain Jicky is meant to be for women but it smells great on men.

I wear Diptyque Vetiveryo most days. Twice when buying it counter assistants have assumed I must be buying it as a present for a man (although I think Diptyque actually lists it as unisex). I also really like Tom Ford's Neroli Portofino and Crabtree & Evelyn's West Indian Lime, both of which are supposed to be for men.

I like some quite feminine fragrances as well, especially for the evening, but lots of men's ones are lovely and seem to work really well on me during the day.

I don't know about women, but there are some mens scents that most certainly increase attractiveness for me personally. No idea why, but they do.
And I wear mens scents often as well.

"I never actually know what to call men's perfume! Is it aftershave?"

I would say cologne.

alfagirl73 · 09/09/2017 13:22

Absolutely! I've worn men's fragrance and I have a male friend who I know wears women's perfume sometimes. Some fragrances although labelled as being for men or for women are actually pretty unisex in terms of how they smell and fragrance can smell different depending on who is wearing it anyway. A fragrance on me may well smell different to how it smells on another person.

I say wear what you want - if you like it, then that's what matters. Life is too short to worry what other people think all the time. Go for it! :-)

Trills · 09/09/2017 13:26

men haven't evolved to be sexually attracted to flowers

Neither have I, but I prefer a man to smell of man + soap or man + Jean Paul Gaultier than just smell of man.

Attraction and evolution are both a lot more complicated than that.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 09/09/2017 13:28

Do it, OP.

I believe Italian women (or is it French?) do this.

Gorgosparta · 09/09/2017 13:29

I wear that one everyday op. I am a woman

I love it! I never even considered not wearing it.

OurMiracle1106 · 09/09/2017 13:30

I have a collection of both aftershave and perfume. If I like the smell of it I will wear it. I also have a bottle of jean Paul gartier in my collection as one I wear

haba · 09/09/2017 13:32

YANBU.

There is one particular male scent that takes me back to one exquisite moment in my youth. Thankfully not many people I come across wear it...

Dustbunny1900 · 09/09/2017 13:38

I'm in love with aqua di gio, so I think (when I get enough money ) I'll just wear it too, instead of hoping a dude comes along who I can sniff haha, but I love perfumes, colognes, and body sprays If they're good quality. Idk what it is but I'm really drawn to a good cologne
