To think this fee for one to one personal training in my gym is a bit steep?

I had seen a poster in the gym from a personal training company offering 4 X 1 hour sessions for £28 as a trial. Obviously they want you to continue paying for sessions with them after the 4 sessions but it's not compulsory to book subsequent sessions.

So I had an introductory chat with the personal trainer today to discuss my goals etc. When I asked how much the sessions will be after the 4 trial sessions, I was told that he charges £40 per hourly session! I had to disguise my shock as I wasn't expecting it to be as expensive as this. Am I way off the mark or am I right that £40 per hourly sessions is extremely expensive?

I am in the North West so it's not London prices.

It's £30 per hour at my gym and I'm also in the North West

I would agree it's steep! I looked at one in the south and she offered 5 sessions for £120 as her standard price. I'd guess they're trying to recoup the money from such a cheap introductory deal:

FenceSitter01 · 08/09/2017 22:50

£25 the half hour at my gym.

littlepeas · 08/09/2017 22:52

Our gym membership is £216 per month (2 adults, 3 children) and PT sessions are £45 per hour (£40 if you book a block of 10)........I think it's probably about standard. Not in London.

LittleWitch · 08/09/2017 22:54

I pay £30 per hour in a private studio (Yorkshire). That's standard to low for round here.

Liadain · 08/09/2017 22:54

€30 here (in block booking, 35 other wise) - for my trainer, depends on the person. Not all of it goes to the trainer. Mine told me that at her old gym, they charged €45 but she got 20...

I would rather pay decent money for a good trainer than throw less after a bad one (and risk injuries). With mine she's putting in a training plan, she has her qualification plus years of experience and doing more courses now too, and she's had a broad base of clients - well worth the money. I wouldn't sign up to a training company and expect them all to be good - personal trainers can vary wildly in quality. Look into the individual trainer.

Weareboatsremember · 08/09/2017 23:02

I pay £20 per hour with my personal trainer at a small independent gym in the West Midlands. £25 a month gym fees.

CakeNinja · 08/09/2017 23:05

Little, are you at a DL gym? Your prices look similar to ours, although ours is a little more, maybe my dc are older than yours?
PT sessions are £40 if you book a set of 10, i just do one a week now.
You can definitely get them cheaper, but I like that it's convenient for me, local (at the end of my road), and I can gym and swim/spa etc afterwards, so it's worth it.

MsMarvel · 08/09/2017 23:08

Mine is £35 a session, although I know my PT now charges a lot more but kept me at my original rate as I was one of her first clients.

adriennewillfly · 08/09/2017 23:16

£50 an hour, but that's in central London. £45 for block booking.

littlepeas · 08/09/2017 23:26

cake the club company, but I think all the big gym company's follow a similar pattern.

backintown · 08/09/2017 23:28

I was a personal trainer 15 years ago & charged £45 per hour or £40 per hour if a block of 10 were booked & paid for in advance. Out of that I paid £15 room hire, plus tax & NI, professional insurance, professional memberships, & had a PPL licence and endless CPD, I was at work from 6am to 8pm most days (but only training people during 'convenient' hours - so lots of random gaps in the day). Plus was self employed so had no holiday or sick pay etc.

Bear in mind this is a career which requires a qualification and skills. Is there a skilled service (plumber, car mechanic, beauty therapist, hairdresser...) that you would expect to do a specific hours work just for you for less than that!?

I was in London when I was charging that (& I have friends there who now charge over £100 per hour plus). The price you pay can possibly depend on what the gym you are attending are counting as 'personal training' (as it is a sadly still a widely unregulated industry), but if they are decent and well qualified as well as up to date with CPD/current research and you think they will get results then £40p/h sounds pretty good to me!

Ginorchoc · 08/09/2017 23:30

Sounds like the pro fit trainers? They have to pay rent to the gym (Total Fitness?) you can share the sessions if this is who you're talking about. Does work out expensive otherwise

NC4now · 08/09/2017 23:32

I pay £35/hour in the North West. He's self employed and has a lot of overheads. It's a lot for me to pay out but when I look at what he takes home for the work he puts in, it seems fair.

AmberCurtain · 08/09/2017 23:34

my friend charges £40 an hour at a small independent gym. He's really good though and writes up meal plans, tracks your weight and measurements and is available via text 24/7 if I have queries.

Urglewurgle · 08/09/2017 23:39

Mine was £30ph in Liverpool city centre. I used to "share" with a mate I.e. we trained together and split the cost. Is that an option? My mate ended up giving up but my PT let me carry on paying half price Wink

user1497863568 · 08/09/2017 23:40

Sounds fair. I charge around the same for two hours of hair and makeup and noone blinks an eye. Actually I'm on the lower side pricewise. Presumably they have 'behind the scenes' costs and prep time as well.

user1497863568 · 08/09/2017 23:41

I meant the same per hour so equivalent of £80 in Australia.

HundredMilesAnHour · 08/09/2017 23:46

Sounds cheap.

But I live in London and have paid from £60 to £120 / hour. And every time I've found you get what you pay for. (I should add that I'm a qualified gym instructor so very picky about my PTs).
