AIBU - I hate school dress up days

The first school dress up day of the year is looming. There is one each term based on topic subject plus World Book Day, red Nose Day, Jeans for Genes Day, Christmas Sweater day etc and I fecking HATE them. I hate them all.
The pressure to create/buy a costume (Asda nylon princess dress for WBD?) Competitive parents (oh this rocket suit my DS is wearing with the led red flames? I threw it together last night -my arse) Disinterested Y6 kids and worst of all, the sobbingkids who don't have a costume because of parents who can't or won't get one together for them.

What is the point of theservice dress up days? Want to raise menu for charity? Ask me for a donation. Educational purposes? Do something fun in class to kick off the topic that all children can participate in and invite parents in to see the results of their special day instead.
I've asked teachers at my DD's school and they told me it's for the kids, they love it - apparently. I don't think the kids care. I think they gain very little out of it compared with some great activity they could do in class, led by the class teacher. Argh!!! AIB an U misanthrope?

daisybelle70 Sadly it does tend to be the very minor, and seemingly insignificant, things like this that some parents get their knickers in a twist about.
Facebook was awash with children asking the daily mail sad face because the school wouldn't let them dress up.

To be honest, at the start of the school year, I'd rather give £10 for all upcoming charity days and say £100 to the PTFA and be done with all the dressing up, raffles, cake sales, fayres, book stalls etc.

Yes! We are past the PTA stage now, but I always thought the PTA should sell 'magic tickets' at the start of each the year which the holder of could show to opt out of all requests to participate in misbegotten fund-raising nonsense.

Feebeela · 09/09/2017 00:06

I suggested to our PTA that we ask parents to give £20 or so at the beginning of the year and be done with all the crap but nooooooooo. We need to have the events and the cake sales. It's important for building school community. Hmm

Add me to the list of people who hate them. I'm SO glad my kids are out of primary school so I don't have to suffer through that nonsense anymore.

We recycled the same hat for years for the Easter Bonnet parade. Stuffed if I was going to make a new one every year. I'm pretty sure the same Prince Charming/knight costume was reused for many Bookwork parades too.

I loathe fancy dress myself too and simple won't attend events that require it.

I love them!

Only the historical topic ones tho. Tudors are my fave.

DGS has dress up days at nursery (!)

SilverBirchTree · 09/09/2017 02:13

It's a lot of extra work, usually for the Mum.

My working mum had some great costume hacks. Sending my brother dressed completely as normal except with a last minute saucepan on his head as a Faraway Tree character for book week stands out.

faithinthesound · 09/09/2017 09:35

Do parents really count up all the dressing-up days, compare it with the previous year and moan if it's less?

Shades of Dudley Dursley. "TEN DRESSING-UP DAYS? BUT LAST YEAR, LAST YEAR WE HAD ELEVEN DRESSING-UP DAYS!"

I do like christmas jumper day for students though.
We are secondary and they wear a christmas jumper on christmas dinner day. It's optional so every year about 3/4 choose to and the ones who 'wouldn't dare' don't have to.
Same for staff. I hate the cheesy jumpers so never wore one. Then I saw a nice one thay wasn't cringe worthy so i got it.
