To think the police were useless?

I had my car smashed to pieces and my mobile phone stolen (fell out of my bag and didn't realise.)

They said to me they would pass the information to a specialist team to track the phone (incident happened within the last hour so may have been possible)

I called up after a few hours to find they closed the case and never bothered to attempt to track it.

I know I'm just a statistic and I wasn't holding much hope of getting back but they were the ones to say they would at least attempt to track it.

I agree totally OP. This is something that call handlers will deal with multiple times a day so suggesting they would track the phone was ridiculous and gave you false hope. I think you have been let down.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 09/09/2017 00:59

Do you have any record of the imei number? Call your ntwork and get the phone bricked, they won't be able to profit from it then.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 09/09/2017 01:05

In fact, you might not even need your IMEI number if you can prove to your network provider that you are the owner of the phone/account, if the phone was originally purchased from them on their network.
It basically locks the phone and makes it unusable, even with a different SIM. I'm not sure if people who unlock phones are able to bypass the block, but im pretty sure they can't.
it means they can't use the phone, or sell it on, as presumably if they sell it in person the buyer will want to see it before handing over cash and will see it is blocked, and if they sell online via Ebay or the likes, buyer can send it back.
Only way they still profit is if they have already sold it on, so the sooner you get it blocked the better, as you're definitely not going to get it back

If your phone fell from your bag then it wasn't stolen it was lost which is not a police matter.
If it's an iPhone use find my phone ?

op you've not communicated what happened at all clearly on this thread. Is it possible that you have similarly unclear information to the police and they misinterpreted what you meant to say?

Lostwithinthehills · 09/09/2017 05:07

The vast majority of staff who answer calls to the police are not police officers and they will have minimal training on criminal legislation and crime investigation. People seem to feel like when they phone 101 they have spoken to 'the police' but in reality that's a bit like phoning the British Gas call centre and assuming you have spoken to a fully trained gas fitter.

PollyMycroft · 09/09/2017 08:11

Police are under-funded. I would imagine their job is bloody hard. However-this means they cannot investigate every crime and then public opinion of their ability falls. I have found them to be generally disinterested when I have reported crimes (car accident, not my fault, other driver drove off. Car stolen by local kids-I'd find it in the morning, they'd steal it again that night. I witnessed a 'smash for cash' -police not bothered, ended up in court.) Police are in catch 22, they don't have the time to investigate and so more of the general public think they are useless.
They should not have said they would look a CCTV though.

creamcheeseandlox · 09/09/2017 08:23

I work for the police and make reports for victims of low level crime like yourself. Unless there is cctv of no more than 20 mins timeframe or a known suspect this crime would be closed immediately. There isn't the resources or amount of officers available for crimes like this that happen thousands of times a day and night. It's sign of the times I'm afraid. Scene of crime may
Come out depending on how long ago it happened or if there's forced entry etc but even then ate stretched and may prioritise other crime etc. What force area are u in?
Most people reporting his would just want a crime reference number for insurance. And as too tracking the phone. That doesn't happen as it's very unreliable 99%of the time and again there isn't officers free to do it.

Shumpalumpa · 09/09/2017 08:34

Also please don't talk to me like I'm an idiot. I didn't demand they track it

What did Aboutagallon talk to you like you are an idiot?

Also, your OP is very confusing and you are snippy.

Farfromtheusual · 09/09/2017 09:28

Yeah they're not going to track your phone. The GPS is not deemed reliable enough anyway. We have people call up here saying they've tracked their phone to such and such address, and we have to say sorry it's not reliable enough and we're not going to go knocking on doors to find a stolen phone.

Also with regards to the cctv the best thing you can do it contact the company with the cctv, and simply get them to confirm that the offence and the offender(s) can be seen and potentially identified. Obviously if it shows someone in a balaclava it's going to be useless. If they confirm this, give them the crime number and get them to send it directly to the police (email is best) and if they won't do that, ask for a named contact and address/phone number and the police can send out a cctv pack for them to send it back to them.
